Any Gin Blossoms on there? Replacements : Goo Goo Dolls :: Material Issue : Gin Blossoms, in my opinion.

I hate to ask, but I am having trouble with this analogy. As in, I only really know the GGD popular stuff, so is it the GGD are a saccharine Replacements (splenda?) as Gin Blossoms are a saccharine approximation of MI? Anywho, I think Soul Asylum could be interchangeable with GGD there.

It's not a perfect analogy, but the Gin Blossoms, as soon as I got around to discovering International Pop Overthrow in 2008, immediately struck me as Material Issue with the rough edges buffed off. That's been the charge levied against the Goo Goo Dolls, that they were mass-consumption Replacements. The Gin Blossoms singer is doing a Jim Ellison impression the same way Rzeznik is doing Westerberg.

EDIT: to clarify, I hear a good bit of "Valerie Loves Me" in "Found Out About You," and "'Til I Hear It From You" is awfully close to "Next Big Thing"

Gin Blossoms to Material Issue is as good as a comp as can be.

Sam....I get it. The problem is General 40-50 year olds don't even know Material Issue. We either play (and it's only one) song very early or very late....same with Sister Havana. Great songs, but the mass general group of people just don't know them. Gin Blossoms....everyone knows them.

Yep, this is really good. Lots of Tom Waits influence here.

It's terrific. I can't stop listening to it.

I am really digging Post Modern Jukebox. Interesting takes on a lot of modern songs. As usual when a Queen song is done in a lush orchestral setting it really shines.

A friend of mine who is into them insisted that I watch a bunch of it. I'm 50/50 on their stuff but appreciate their technical mastery.

But one singer of theirs that I love is Morgan James (she does the Maps cover from Maroon 5 as a 70s Motown style, which makes sense because she played Teena Marie on Broadway). She is Juliard trained and has been in a bunch of Broadway musicals, and is married to a guitarist. She does her own stuff as well as covers, and a lot of the covers are really good.

Haley Reinhart from PMJ is from Buffalo Grove and seems like the daughter of any of a number of girls that I would have gone to junior high with in West Wilmette in the 70s. Solid voice, but too affected with costumes and shit to be consistent.

Got to hand it to Telephone Sam! I reckon youre a man of taste. Well, here's what I've had on the old record player recently. I could do without some of the cussing, but what is real is real. God bless.

I wasn't much of a fan of hers in the past. This album is nuts, so good.

Yeah, over the last couple of years, Google has made it near impossible to post pics. That's why I post so much Twitter. One of the reasons.

I usually have to open the image in a new tab--or use DuckDuckGo or a non-Chrome browser. Certain sites (like Pinterest) won't let you use link to photos easily, either.

70s Jackson Browne. I'm starting a project for the rest of May and June to take an artist from my Spotifiy "Liked" list and listen for a solid hour. Running on Empty was the first 45 I bought as a teenager, so I figured he should go first.

I like his '80s stuff more for some reason: Hold Out, Lawyers in Love, Lives in the Balance. Has an energy to it that I like. I love "Fountain of Sorrow" as much as anyone but sometimes all that '70s L.A. singer-songwriter stuff gets plodding, right?

In sequence, yeah. In shuffle, 10-15% 70s white guys tends to work for me. I'm not as much of a fan of his more political stuff. Same with Richie Lee Jones.

My high school years were a weird mix at the end of disco, with WBMX/WGCI as a really big influence, the LA singer songwriters (I'll throw Chicago in there as well), the Steely Dan tree including Michael McDonald and Skunk Baxter going to the Doobie Brothers, and the very beginning of music videos. College was MTV and more pop, graduate school added diving in LP clearance bins at the old Rolling Stones on Irving Park and reading more actual literature/critcism about how it all fit together.

My last six artists on my big 1300 song shuffle playing as I write this: 38 Special, Alicia Keys, Steely Dan, the Four Tops, Heather Headley, and a Joss Stone/Common duet. Even though I'm the same age as JORR, my music is about as diametrically opposed as conceiveable!

Stumbled across this Chicago cover band, which is made up entirely of Russians. Just brought a smile to my face. Such precision and great vibe. Actually scheduled to play the Arcadia in St. Charles in November (which who knows if it will happen...).

The singer of this group (Roy Khan) was the front man for Kamelot, but then took some time off for burnout.
