And you are basing this on what? The commissioner said in the article that he was confident there would be baseball at some point. I get why people think there will be no end to the NHL and NBA season, but baseball would have just been a month into the season today. There is a lot of time to salvage some type of a season.

Who's going to the games? Everyone thinks the next person they see will kill them and all their loved ones, and they also have no money. Sure, empty stadiums, but baseball isn't a TV show like football, they rely on parking/beer/ticket revenues. (Hockey relies on them even more.) You can do that for a game or two because of race riots, but for 80-100 games? The math doesn't add up. Everything is fucked forever.

So you seriously think there will be no more sports ever?

Curious Hair is the ultimate Chicken Little.

Yeah remember he is the guy that was screaming that the Blackhawks could never win during one of the Cup runs....right up until they were hoisting the Cup.

Curious Hair is speaking truth. I doubt he wants all of that to happen, but the writing is right there on the wall.

I didn't say there would never be baseball, just that 2020 is toast, we're going to lose the Rays and Athletics, and few people will be able to afford going to games for a long time.

You said originally everything is fucked forever. Then you backed that down to a long time, that extends out past 2020

At the very least, the fan experience- if attendance is even allowed- at sporting events and concerts will be a lot different until at least the middle of 2021.

Sports will find a way to adapt and survive. At this point, I think most fans would embrace almost any change that in instituted to have a live sporting event to watch. I expect the TV ratings for the first few PGA events in June to be pretty high compared to what they normally are.

A major North American sports team hasn't gone out of business since the Cleveland Barons in 1978. We could, not saying will but could, see eight to ten teams fold because of this. I'd call that pretty fucked!

Since you're going to ask for the list:

Oakland Athletics
Tampa Bay Rays
Winnipeg Jets
Ottawa Senators
Calgary Flames
Phoenix Coyotes
Florida Panthers
the Seattle expansion team is "paused indefinitely"
New Orleans Pelicans
Memphis Grizzlies
maybe the Miami Marlins

They'll nationalize the franchises. Whoever is in government wont want the blood of baseball on their hands. I'd imagine Canada will rescue the Canadian NHL franchises, too.

American NHL franchises that fail? RIP.

And you could die this afternoon from choking on a gummy bear.

You just seem to be throwing shit at the wall. 8 to 10 baseball teams are going to fold now?

I agree with Frank, teams will find ways to adapt.

Every team becoming the Green Bay Packers would not be the worst outcome. A good number of the teams are already playing in publicly built and owned facilities that foolishly sign their master leases over to private companies. That was the plan for saving the Jets in '96 and then the NHL killed it because they wanted the team out of there anyway.

My answer is always the same when they talk about sports franchises having economic issues. I'll buy the team for $1 right now. I wanted to buy Wrigley Field. I might as well buy the Diamondbacks.

If there is no MLB in 2020 AND 2021 (along with no NHL in 2021), then some of what CH is saying might come to fruition. Its plausible anyway.

Even if there is zero MLB season this year, baseball will still return, find a way to adapt, and survive.

I don't think school will be back to school in the fall and I think they will extend that to the spring semester. No school = no sports. Unless they do start playing in empty stadiums but then revenue has to come from tv? I just don't see it working.

The White Sox are ludicrously profitable though.

The NFL will take care of this in the fall if no one else has. The NFL will win in court against anything that prohibits games from being played.

I think school is a separate discussion and will be depending on where you are

I also think that even if school is open, but Karen feels is unsafe to send her little Bartholomew to school than Elearning will be an option. I don't think attendance will be mandatory at first.

They can keep an eye on their kid at the game. At the school, they have to trust the staff.

You will see "split schedules" in the fall....they have been peddling that for a while in the cases of overcrowded schools and not enough funding to build more schools. Now they can pilot it.

Same here. The NCAA can't go with football until schools have the students come back, and it's not clear that August 15 is going to work in some states.

The NCAA can push basketball back to start December 15 and run into early May if needed with an abbreviated schedule and mostly in-conference games. Basketball players frequently have to stay over Christmas break.

With or without NCAA football, most of the half-assed college bowls are kaput. This might be the impetus to a 16 team playoff for 2021.

https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/04/28/mlb-s ... -divisions

Quote:
MLB is discussing a potential plan to start the season in late June and allow teams to play at their home ballparks with realigned divisions, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
The proposed plan involves realigning MLB into three divisions based on teams' locations rather than the National and American Leagues. The new divisions would help reduce travel, and teams would play with no fans in attendance.
Nightengale reports the new plan is "pending approval of medical experts and providing that COVID-19 testing is available to the public." It would eliminate the need for players to be in isolation, although it remains unknown if teams would open the season in Arizona, Texas and Florida for a few weeks.
MLB could potentially have a 100-game regular season before holding the playoffs with an expanded format. According to Nightengale, players are expected to have 18 to 21 days to train at teams' Arizona or Florida spring training sites before starting the season.
Here's a look at the reported possible realigned divisions:
EAST:
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
Miami Marlins
New York Mets
New York Yankees
Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates
Tampa Bay Rays
Toronto Blue Jays
Washington Nationals
WEST:
Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
Los Angeles Angels
Los Angeles Dodgers
Houston Astros
Oakland Athletics
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants
Seattle Mariners
Texas Rangers
CENTRAL:
Atlanta Braves
Chicago Cubs
Chicago White Sox
Cincinnati Reds
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Kansas City Royals
St. Louis Cardinals
Milwaukee Brewers
Minnesota Twins
