Correct.

Pompei brought up again that depending on when the season starts, he may be on PUP.

Yeah, the labrum is his current injury.

He played 1.5 seasons with the labrum injury

The Bears really have no idea what the status of his shoulder is, and that's the problem. Nobody got medicals done on any of these guys, its why drafting Tua carried way more risk than usual also. I am at peace with him needing to redshirt his rookie year, but it could be a lot worse than that.

But the Bears (correctly) surmised that they are very bad and if they can get a guy who easily has all the traits of an all pro cornerback, the other guy who had these traits went third, all the way down at fiftieth then they are almost obligated to take that risk.

Physicality and ball skills are the holy combination at cornerback. For that to come in a guy who is 6' 200 and runs a 4.5 flat is remarkable, it certainly doesn't happen every year.

Its almost more alarming that he fell to 2.50. It means everyone else was terrified of him. The cope I'm using is that it was such a good draft everywhere else that we hadn't hit the risk/reward point for this type of pick yet.

So we come out of the draft with four guys that likely make an impact: possible starting Y TE, possible starting CB, and OLB that likely gets at least a few snaps, possible depth CB, and a smurf WR that could (if he doesn't get killed) add needed speed.

Conversely its very possible the only guy they drafted this year who makes any sort of impact is Mooney.

Kmet is going to need a lot of development, it may take a calendar of NFL "strength and conditioning" for him to be where he needs to be. Jaylon Johnson is probably the biggest injury question mark aside from Tua in the whole draft. Gipson is a nice player, I like what he brings a lot, but that's a really hard position to learn.

Tua's Wonderlic is more concerning than his ankle.

Agree that Mooney is an interesting prospect, potentially a much cheaper version of Gabriel, biggest concern is his lack of size, hopefully he is a little better at avoiding contact than Gabriel. Frequent shoulder injuries would seem to put him at high risk of future subluxations like we've seen in Miller, especially with the rigors placed on NFL defensive backs. Someone has to fill the backup OLB role and with the way they like to rest Mack that opens up a ton of snaps. If Kmet comes in and is a willing blocker and puts up 30 plus catches it will be a solid season.

Typically Labrum repair is 4-6 weeks. It is not like a major shoulder surgery.

It was a much more developmental draft than I expected. I know most drafts really dont take off until year two anyways, but this draft particularly feels that way. I'm not sure it was Pace's intent for that to be the case, but if it was its a bit worrisome. I really dont want him back next year. Another year of Pace free agent blunders compounded by him wasting another top ten pick will start to meaningfully set this franchise back.

I dont think he will be though. The Bears shitcanned Lovie after a ten win season. They fired Trestman after two years and Emery after only three, the latter being a remarkably short leash for a GM. They dont keep guys around past their expiration date.

That's basically every rookie TE. Comes with the territory.

Yeah, fair point. Though I'm not sure the Bears fully understand this.

I don't have any trouble with the guys that were drafted by the Bears. I have a HUGE PROBLEM with the entire off season and their failure to do a single thing to fix the offensive line. Leno and Massie and their respective agents have to have had a big party when their replacements were not signed or drafted. What a dope Pace is. :x :x

Bringing in Jimmy Graham to mentor him was a step in the right direction.

The Bears need a running back and they took no one.

This is not true. Montgomery is not the problem. Play calling and our O-line is. Give Montgomery a little more time before writing him off.

Bears were not drafting a RB a year after trading up to take a RB.

That's an interesting take. But they brought in Graham a month ago and just drafted him. I guess that is plausible but that also means that their number one priority going into the draft was a tight end. And that, to me, was incredibly stupid.

I guess I meant to mentor the TEs in general and it worked out well that we drafted a TE needing mentoring.

Yes 100%. That’s the general consensus.
