garden is usually 8-10 tomatoes plants, 4-10 pepper plants and two 6 foot rows of cukes.

Growing tomatoes from seed is kind of a process. You need proper lighting and heat. I had a mini seed growing enterprise for a few years. Neighbors thought I was growing pot.

Last year we did 5 tomatoes, 3 peppers, probably 12 basil, and a herb planter with rosemary, thyme, cilantro, parsley and something else (I don't remember)

For tomatoes:
  • we do a mix of heirloom and the small cherries (both yellow and red). That way we are not waiting so long to start harvesting.
  • We buy established plants and plant them around mother's day.
  • I amend the soil with mushroom compost and then add 6 or 7 fertilizer spikes after planting.
  • Last year we had a bumper crop. Couldn't use 1/2 of what we harvested. Gave lots away.

What do you use to keep the bugs/vermin away?

The squirrels/chipmunks leave the cherry and grape tomatoes alone but destroyed my "standard" size tomatoes

It's weird; in prior years the squirrels did a number on the big ones. Last year I relocated them because the previous spot was loosing sun due to tree growth. I don't recall having much of a problem last in the new spot, which is behind the garage and adjacent to a big stone wall. Makes no sense because they run back and forth on that wall all day long.

But to answer your question; nothing. And we don't have any pets either.

Humidity dome and tray(12$)
Light bulb and seeds.

You can choose from hunnerts of varieties. It’s also way cheaper is you do a lot. One year I planted about 50 tomato plants

I haven't had a garden in a couple years. Think I'll get back into it this year.

I treat my veggies like my outdoor marijuana, you're going to be consuming it. Neem oil and lots of nematodes and praying mantis. The nematodes are Scrappy and reproduce quickly. Every year I buy mantis eggs and nematodes. You don't want to be spraying nasty shit on your garden.

No garden plot at the new place. Might try to do some growing in pots like peppers or maybe tomatoes but we will see.

Never tried tomatoes in pots but due to limited sun we do peppers every year in pots, with great success.

I think I'll be doing pepper pots this year. We have a small raised planter but it doesn't get a lot of sun. Anyone ever try those upside down tomato baskets?

Tall Midget ought to be worried about where the fuck his next lay is coming from, rather than where his god dammed tomato plant is.

We’ve done them from seed but even going to the local nursery there are dozens of options that can find you with 30+ plants and then wondering how your going too deal with them all..I need a second garden for the the plants that take up loys if room... and a full time employee to weed the dang thing.

our set up. our neighbors all have gardens and don't fence it but since this photo we've put up a 4' fence.

tomatoes, all sorts of peppers, okra, zucchini, squash, onions, carrots, broccoli i think are the mainstays.

we don't have much in the way of rabbits. its mostly raccoons. they are ridiculous and quite frankly the fence we do have will likely do very little.

The farmer up the road does 2 rows about 400 yds long of sweet corn as he plants the rest of his feedcorn rows so i don't have to mess with that.

I don't have a good southern exposure. Back patio is eastern exposure, no fences. So I'm not going to try any vegetable gardening this year. But I have some sturdy 16" MDF cubes that are 25 years old and used to be part of office storage, and I may put one on the patio and try to grow some plants this year and then consider some grape tomatoes or hot peppers next year.

Is this your front yard or a community garden?
