This is why I detest many liberals: They are chiefly about shaming you, about showing how they are better. That they do so while also being able to claim that they are helping, that they care, is a neat trick. They can even paint themselves as self-sacrificing while doing so. Where class consciousness and empathy should be, they have smugness instead; for those who have empathy, they dole it out only to certain targeted groups. And if you call them on their bullshit, they'll use either their power (your boss, your child's teacher, Bernstein's megaphone) to shut you up or go back to portraying themselves as the ones who really care, whereas you are stuck in your -isms.

Many conservatives obviously do this as well. There's a chunk of both who are cut from the same cloth: they want to be able to tell you what to do, and it irritates them when they can't police your behavior. They hate it when you are having a good time.

I like Bernstein's Twitter feed, but his descriptions of his cooking exploits are the worst. Every story is just designed to show the rest of us his high level of intelligence and cultural knowledge.
