Darko, got a guy in around Brookfield/western suburbs? Hopefully not, but might need a new A/C. Thanks in advance!

Whats happening with it?

At this point, nothing. Everything in the house is blowing but the unit outside is just sitting there doing nothing. Have exhausted my homeowner repair skills after flipping the breaker for it.

That being said, at some point in the very near future we’ll need a new one, even if this one is easy/cheap to fix.

I mean central air of course.

Do you have one of those fancy new wifi thermostats? Those things seem to be pieces of shit that break and then don't send the signal to fire the condenser. I also had low pressure in my AC at the old house and it would fire and then stop, fire and then stop.....until i just turned it off. The expert will be in shortly. I just hook the power up to these things so I have like a 10 percent idea of whats going on which is pretty much useless.

Nah, thermostat and unit are probably 10 years old. Every year when they service it they say they aren’t using this kind of coolant anymore so don’t expect it to keep working, but it always does.

Did you try turning it off then on again?

Did you check the outside disconnect device- it's wired in right near the unit so a repairman can protect him/herself from the electricity- often just a pull-out and flip over then re-insert type disconnect, I used to flip mine so my wife could not fire the A/C up on the first mid-70s day in April.

Obviously, also check there for rodent-tasted control wires to the fan/compressor.

Or, move.

Between the lack of AC and flooding, you've had to wear it the past week or so KD. Here's hoping for better luck around the home.

At your furnace, the main control board has a red and green LED, IF one of them is flashing, see if it is flashing in a pattern- three blinks then a break, etc. You should be able to see it from outside the furnace, maybe through a small, round plastic window, or even right there visible.

Google the brand/flash pattern and see what may be the cause- some have a chart on the inside of the furnace panel to tell you. You may be able to reset it by turning off the switch at the furnace or a reset button on the main control board- it might come right back in again, but it may be worth a shot...

Thats not gonna help you. I think on that system the green blinks indicate airflow in hundreds of cfm amlnd the red blink just tells you its powered unless its blinking 2 3 4 or more times quickly
Either way, the furnace doesn't diagnose the ac condenser.
So the way I understand it is that the fan is running but the condenser is not?
If you want to send me a pic of the condenser pm me and ill send you my number.

Had the guy out today and we got bent over pretty good . Guess he found a wire on the motherboard that became “ disconnected “ somehow ( even though no one has opened that panel since last October when a different tech from his company was out doing our winter tune up ) . He reconnected it and while he stayed around to make sure everything was working , magically came up with we were low on Freon ( unit is 5 years old ) and he added some . Total cost . $650. Absolute bullshit .

Truth is you got screwed and there's no way to prove it. I've been seeing this exact scenario more and more frequently over the years. Whomever you used should never get a penny of your business ever again. If you tell me abouts where you live like county or whatever I will recommend someone I would trust. Or if you want to you can always pm me for recommendations.

Fuck, brogue could have just messaged you and saved $650!

DS was able to fix my condenser while maintaining extra social distance all the way from Lakemoor to my house in Brookfield. Can’t thank DS enough for saving me, oh....if I had to make an educated guess...$650. Also thanks to DW for letting him work from home after he’d been out all day. It takes a smart dude to walk a mechanical idiot like me though it.

Dear Darko:

I turned on my AC yesterday and now have water on the floor. I think it's because the copper pipes don't have insulation around them. Why would someone leave that off? I just bought the house, and it's old.

The water is likely from a clogged condensate line (typically 3/4 inch pvc), or a clog in the evaporator pan outlet to the pvc pipe, or a broken evaporator drain pan.
Now for the copper pipes, only the bigget one needs insulation. The smaller one does not.
If the big one isn’t insulated it will certainly sweat and drip.

So, was your issue a loose wire from the control board, also?

Not loose, mate, not landed in the right location.
So in winter of 18 I find a big crack in my dads furnace heat exchanger. I told him I'd swap out the thing but he's got some stupid ass home warranty so he wanted them to replace the system. Fine, pops. Have the home warranty contractor do it.
Anyway when its finally replaced, the tech says to my dad "hey if there's any trouble with the old ac give me a call". So come last spring, pops turns on the ac and it doesn't come on.
The condenser wire common wasn't landed on the board.
I feel like this is a new scam being run out there and it pisses me off.

Had KD had service done at some point that the guy might have set him up for this, or did it just come loose? Seems like a pattern could be established if service had been done previously.

I'm glad you could talk him through it; that's good on you to give your expertise away here. Troubleshooting requires knowledge, parts replacement just requires dexterity. I am not an HVAC technician, but I have been called an aspiring one at work before, and I may have played that role in an adult film or twenty, (several of them straight).

I know you disagreed with my light code suggestion, but I thought I remembered my Trane having a flash code when the A/C compressor capacitor took a dump, maybe I'm just misremembering, or my system is different.

It didn't just come loose it was landed in the wrong place (the condenser wire) and the y wire from the stat wasn't landed at all, just laying against the terminal. The only reason the fan came on at all indoors was because his stat was sending a signal to G as well as Y (although the Y signal was likely not being received by the board) when cooling was on.
I see it as one of only 2 possibilities. Sheer incompetence by the last tech or a setup for a service call.
