what the NBA and NHL are doing seems about as relevant to the 2020 season as a charity game. I may have some interest but its really hollow in terms of crowning a champion.

Yeah even if I liked all those sports equally, there's a completely different feeling between a league starting a new regular season and restarting a season interrupted for 3-4 months with some weird playoff format in Disneyworld.

You may be right, but if those two leagues pull this off and MLB doesn't get a season together, they're going to make MLB look like total clowns.

Facemasks, economic collapse, those are all bad, but MLB getting clowned by the NHL is not a world I'm ready to live in.

They don't wanna have the playoffs extend into November due to second wave concerns. So are all these leagues going to spin up between now and Nov 1 and then shutdown again til next spring.

Then just cancel and save the 2 billion losses. Start over next year. Negotiate a better deal next time.

This is all about the expiring agreement after 2021. The owners are just trying to get a head start.

Have no fear fellas. It will be settled this week. The commissioner will dictate this even though it may cost him his job. If he doesn't dictate it, it will CERTAINLY cost him his job.

Now with the race riots I'm reconsidering if I want sports to start-up. You know NFL players will kneel during the anthem. Sports talk will focus more on race than sports. They'll be apologizing, weeping, analysis, conflict, police hate. Evan Kane and deadpan Toews are apologizing and being SJW. Wait until 2021, and a side benefit will be killing the liberal score, and resurrecting it with a clean, fresh group of hosts.

I'm not trying to start an argument, just curious. To whom is the commissioner dictating in your scenario? The players or the owners? Also, do you think either the players or owners actually respect or listen to this commissioner?

Players have a contract and have agreed to prorated games. It's up to the owners to decide how many games. Playoffs are a different matter if owners want to expand it.

Who knows, come July, fans may be able to attend. Corona is dying. Dying quickly.

The owners seem to think that they haven't agreed to anything, and both sides (at least publicly) seem like they are very far apart. I would like to embrace your optimism, but baseball, as an institution, is stupid enough to completely chuck the season. However, for some reason, the draft is still taking place.

I remember hearing a national host a few years ago talk about an accountant from Stanford who got a glimpse at some MLB teams books. He basically said he couldn't do an accurate account with so much missing information. I heard the Braves " lost" 25 million last season, I'm not buying any of it.

I think the only team not to turn a profit last year was the Marlins.

I don't even buy that, I know a few years back when the Marlins were sold to Jeter group for 1.2 billion.. Loria bought that team for less than 200 million and claimed zero profits on the sale. 900million more than what he paid for it over 13 years and he claims no profit..These greedy MFers are all full of shit.

I think it is pretty obvious MLB is dependent on in person attendance.

With the way franchise values have went up. I think it is pretty clear they are not. With the Marlins being the perfect example.

2016 was last year of old CBA. Owners have absolutely crushed them. I don't understand how MLBPA hasn't fired their leadership ahead of next CBA.

Year Salary % Change
2020 $4.48 +1.8%
2019 $4.40 -1.8%
2018 $4.48 -0.6%
2017 $4.51 +4.6%
2016 $4.31 +2.6%

If I was an owner:

I'd go with 2 plans

50 games with expanded playoffs if the cocksucker politicians commit to let fans in September 1.
70 games if the cocksucker politicians let fans in August 1.

If the cocksucker politicians won't commit, you have to commit to 50 games and no playoffs. Just a World Series. Then you browbeat the cocksucker politicians 24/7 until they cave. Fans can protest every game day outside. "Let us in. Let us in"

There will be full or expanded playoffs due to the national TV money. Most of it comes from the playoff games.

The owners are fighting hard to play less games. What would be the reason for that is it wasn't because there won't be fans there?

feels just like 94.

scum and greed on both sides.

i dont think there will be a season. but i read somewhere players can't strike and they have to abide to whatever the owners agree on.

if they do 50 games every team in the league has a shot. If one team gets into a hot stretch of 2-3 weeks they pretty much will come out on top.

forget divisions if it's 50 games. do it like the old days where there will be a pennant winner from each 15 team league and that winner gets into the world series.

But with 50 games you may see a more exciting finish like the 1968 AL race where you may have up to 8 teams going into the final week with a shot at winning the pennant. they would also have to plan for ties with multiple teams in first place where you would need to do a playoff tourney to determine the pennant winner.

but saying all that probably no season.

Conns is absolutely correct here...it's obvious based on the rule changes they're trying to sneak in during the shortened season
BUT....the players are also looking ahead and protecting themselves against the next CBA...as they should be.

Baseball games extending into November is complete nonsense. Terrible idea.

I actually like Nardi's recommendation....I'd love to see MLB pressure to get fans back in stands. They don't have the balls.
