The Aunt Jemima brand of syrup and pancake mix will get a new name and image, Quaker Oats announced Wednesday, saying the company recognizes that "Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype."

The 130-year-old brand features a Black woman named Aunt Jemima, who was originally dressed as a minstrel character.

The picture has changed over time, and in recent years Quaker removed the “mammy” kerchief from the character to blunt growing criticism that the brand perpetuated a racist stereotype that dated to the days of slavery. But Quaker, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, said removing the image and name is part of an effort by the company “to make progress toward racial equality.”

It feels like we're going overboard to the point it's annoying. Maybe that's by design.

Were these images offensive to anyone on the board? I'm honestly asking, I'm not judging the answer.

Yes, they were. There's a point where you stop caring because you have bigger fish to fry.

My great grandmother, a child of former slaves, taught me how to cook so I'd never have to buy that crap. I regretted forgetting her pancake recipe the second my wife brought the first box for my sons.

Interesting. Thank you. I appreciate your candor.
Yeah well if it was offensive to people seems like the easy and simple thing to do is to lose the offensive imagery.

I've often thought that some of the stuff happening lately (seemingly ridiculous "cancellations" and stories to generate outrage), is being created not by the woke left, but actually by the extreme right...in an attempt to get conservatives riled up.

Learned how NOT to ever "cook" out of a box at a young age and it's one of the greatest things that got passed down. No measuring either.

You're not alone on this. I considered this a while ago as well. "BLM" was dormant for nearly 4 years and right when the president was having trouble, they were activated.

It actually created a bit of tension here that I didn't see coming.

Ever have the pancakes at Cellar's Market in the CBOT? I think they're the best...even though the syrup isn't real.

There are some interviews with the original BLM people that are pretty damning. Not just your standard FBI/CIA/whatever infiltration but political operatives from both sides that are up to all sorts of games.

I doubt that I've had a dozen pancakes in my adult life. If I eat breakfast, it's a bacon sandwich or an omelette.
