A girl doesn’t call another girl a attractive lady unless she’s ready to back that shit up.

We (not me anymore) use it for the same reason every other group use slurs that are directed at them.

I know the why. I just would like the wouldn't better.

I don't go around calling people krauts or Nazis. You can perpetuate the myth all you want, but I don't think groups of italians use slurs toward other italians in every other sentence.

I have to disagree with you strongly on this. African Americans have always (rightfully) cried out for equality while at the same time doing everything possible to isolate and claim a unique culture for themselves that no one else should have access to. There has always been a desire for separatism on both sides, unfortunately.

The sooner we all can admit to things like this, the sooner we can have real progress.

I was just in Myrtle Beach SC last summer. There were no chains anymore but there was a diner/breakfast place proudly using a tar baby logo/sign.

I think I saw that, too. It took some time to explain it all to my kids.

I don't think Nas is being disingenuous at all, but to claim 'everyone is doing it' is wrong, and isn't a valid defense. He may just be misinformed.

Facebook wackos taking the bait.

The world knew her as "Aunt Jemima," but her given name was Nancy Green, and she was a true American success story. She was born a slave in 1834 Montgomery County, KY and became a wealthy superstar in the advertising world as its first "living trademark."

Green was 56 years old when she was selected as spokesperson for a new ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour and made her debut in 1893 at a fair and exposition in Chicago. She demonstrated the pancake mix and served thousands of pancakes ... and became an immediate star. She was a good storyteller, her personality was warm and appealing, and her showmanship was exceptional. Her exhibition booth drew so many people that special security personnel was assigned to keep the crowds moving.

Nancy Green was signed to a lifetime contract, traveled on promotional tours all over the country, and was extremely well paid. Her financial freedom and stature as a national spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for folks in Chicago.

She maintained her job until her death in 1923, at age 89.

This was a remarkable woman... and she has just been ERASED by politically correct liberals.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

That's great that you don't use those particular slurs. Have you never used one? Are you suggesting that blacks use the n-word every other sentence? Are you suggesting that other groups of people don't use slurs in the way I described in this thread? Help me understand exactly what you are in disagreement with.

How did African Americans isolate themselves? When we get anywhere near middle class status, MANY of us move to communities that may have few people who look like us. History has shown that often times whites move away when that happens. We've fought to attend your schools. These aren't things that a group of people who want to isolate themselves would do.

In what ways have blacks desired separatism? Our women spend thousands of dollars trying to get their hair to look like yours, they starved and mutilated themselves to get a European acceptable body, we copied European fashion, the way you spoke, MANY of us think we made it when we live in your communities, we give our daughters dolls that look like you and black men have spent centuries trying to present themselves in a way that White America finds acceptable and non threatening.

Doesn't every group of people who came here on a plane, boat or was already here have claim to a unique culture? We often have local festivals or holidays to celebrate the uniqueness of MANY cultures. These cultures have unique cuisine and many other things. No one demands that they give them up. We embrace it as part of the greatness of our great experiment.

What is black culture? Slavery robbed many of us of the heritage of the country our ancestors descended from. From music to food to entertainment, we've willingly shared and in many cases don't actually own significant parts of "black culture".

You're my guy. I think that these conversations are always healthy. Especially if they're somewhat uncomfortable. The statements you made don't seem to be supported by facts though. They appear to be supported by something you read or heard on television or possibly a small portion of hip hop culture.

I think I might have used the term kraut once or twice, in some sort of sarcastic sense. We know I've used the term Nazi a lot but not related to German ethnicity. I'm suggesting some blacks use it excessively as a replacement for countless other words. Sometimes replacing 'buddy.' Sometimes as an insult. I do not believe any other group uses their own ethnic slurs in the number of ways and in the quantity that black Americans do. To outsiders, it simply seems like 'we are different so we can do things that you can't...na na naaa na naaaa na.' Let's just look at music for a moment. http://www.besttickets.com/blog/rap-profanity/ Now let me know how many bachata or cumbia songs you know that use hispanic slurs.

And in those schools, there are often cliques. Conant was an extremely diverse and accepting school; I can't imagine how it could have been any more inclusive. And yet there was this one hallway near the cafeteria where the black kids hung out between periods or during lunch. A lot of these kids were my friends. They'd be a part of our social groups during whatever classes we had together, gym, and after school. But there was just something about the school day where these kids had to hang out together. Just the black kids. The only other group that came close to acting like that were the Asian kids, and there interests were usually tied into things others didn't care about like anime or whatever.

Just consider the opposite of what you just said. Is Eminem the only white person in history that has truly been accepted by black Americans to participate in their subculture? How is a white kid that loves thicc black women, wears Sean John and Tims, tries to speak the current urban lingo...at best, you ostracize him. At worst, you kick the shit out of him. We all knew white guys like that.

All of this is true. But I've never heard any Polish or Slovak individuals in the Ukrainian Village talk about wanting to reclaim their neighborhood and yelling about how there are so many new business owners in the area that don't share their own ethnic heritage.

We all might have different answers to this, but my own answer would be the hip-hop / sneaker culture. Clearly, this isn't 'African' culture but created here in America.

I've now used several personal examples from growing up, which being less than 20 years ago I still feel are current enough and valid. We haven't made too many recent strides in this area, after all. So at worst, I've used personal experience. I'm not sure what you mean by facts though.

You're my kraut too.

Always made me uncomfortable.

Never heard any of the three, certainly not as a kid. Odd.

Never once thought of Mrs. Butterworth as 'balck'.

So it's not that you or other groups don't use the slurs, it's the frequency in which you believe blacks use the n-word? I never made an argument about frequency. I simply stated that all groups use slurs in similar ways.

You're taking an anecdote where you acknowledge that black kids were a part of the same social groups and were your friends and projecting that onto blacks throughout America. Do you think that's fair or even reliable? I shared with you countless ways that we attempt to join your communities, schools and social clubs. That clearly goes against a desire to isolate ours.

Elvis is a really popular guy and there are MANY white hip hop artists who are popular and were/are stars. There are Asian rappers, Hispanic rappers and white rappers. Hip hop and R&B has made it to nearly every continent in the world. I can assure you that all of the "stars" aren't only black. That speaks to the inclusiveness of the genre of music. Do genres of music that represent other cultures have a bunch of people outside that culture as stars? Like Eminem, is there a person outside those cultures who is considered the greatest or one of the greatest? Besides, blacks don't buy most of the music or even own the rights to most of it. Also, do you think other groups of people celebrate when they see someone wearing attire that's supposed to be "unique" to their culture? I would also be remiss if I didn't point out that hip hop is a subculture of Black America. They don't represent the overwhelming majority of Black America.

I can't think of a predominantly black neighborhood in Chicago where the majority of the businesses are black owned. Are there many ethnic neighborhoods in America where the overwhelming majority of businesses are owned by people outside of their "community"? That may be why you don't hear it.

Hip hop is a subculture of Black America and it is shared by the world. I'm not saying sneakers aren't a big part of a subculture of Black America, but I probably have met more white "Sneakerheads" and similar to hip hop, all groups of people seem to collect sneakers.

Yes, you provided your personal experience. That personal experience appears to be shaped by subcultures of Black America that are shared with the world. You don't objectively look at how inclusive other groups of people are when it comes to their culture, you exclude the overwhelming majority of Black America who aren't influenced by hip-hop and you're not exactly providing evidence that disputes anything that I posted. The fact is that historically the overwhelming of Black America has done just about everything possible to be accepted by White America and that hasn't changed.

We all might have different answers to this, but my own answer would be the hip-hop / sneaker culture. Clearly, this isn't 'African' culture but created here in America.

Nas wrote:
You're my guy. I think that these conversations are always healthy. Especially if they're somewhat uncomfortable. The statements you made don't seem to be supported by facts though. They appear to be supported by something you read or heard on television or possibly a small portion of hip hop culture.

I've now used several personal examples from growing up, which being less than 20 years ago I still feel are current enough and valid. We haven't made too many recent strides in this area, after all. So at worst, I've used personal experience. I'm not sure what you mean by facts though.

You're my kraut too.

Interesting exchanges. There's a lot here where what both Nas and IMU say (when in disagreement) are both true to an extent, I think. Worth reading.

We (not me anymore) use it for the same reason every other group use slurs that are directed at them.

Totally agree with the first sentence. I've heard of one Irish "slur" ever. Which was the word Mick. It still sounds odd to me that the word was a slur. But I didn't grow up in a home where are ancestry was embraced. I still don't know the tune, or the words to "Danny Boy". Though the Irish can be a self loathing bunch that are prone to blame their issues on Great Britian, I can't even tell you a British slur.

Italians would never refer to themselves as dagos or grease balls. The have a lot of pride being descendants of Italy.

We would tell Polish jokes growing up.(sorry dolphin) That was about it. What does STP stand for?

Things were "jimmy rigged" where i came from. And I heard that term a lot since my dad was the mechanic for the family business.

The N word was something I would hear rarely. And it was not tolerated by my father. Ever.

My wife is 100% German. My dad used to refer to our children as Leperkrauts which I never thought much of when he said it. Our older children thought it was silly then, and still do to this day.

Always made me uncomfortable.

Never heard any of the three, certainly not as a kid. Odd.

Never once thought of Mrs. Butterworth as 'balck'.

Really? I guess that's cool. I moved to the neighborhood in which I live in part because it would be hard to hear this stuff every day, since the neighborhood is stably integrated.

On another note, seeing JORR and Nas argue is like listening to your friend's parents argue. Same thing with RR and leash. Just makes you uncomfortable when you see people you like and respect really get pissed at each other. I'm not saying that we shouldn't disagree and be passionate or discuss uncomfortable things. But, as dumb as it sounds, it's uncomfortable.

We watched the Breakfast Club the other night and it was a bit jarring to hear them use the "f*g" word as a pejorative. It's strange how these things evolve as I can recall how frequently and casually that term was used as a slight (mostly among friends) in that era.

I hear the word "N rigged" every couple months. The mechanics forget once in awhile that I am married to a black woman and my kid is mixed and quickly give me an uncomfortable look and then the next day they change it to "Jimmy rigged"

Learned the term "N pill" in grade school before I new what the word even meant. Stopped hearing it when they kids switched it to "Smear the Queer".

I grew up with polish/german relatives in Chicago and they used to complain about how the neighborhood was turning "black or mexican" and how it was so much nicer before they all moved in. My uncle once through a bar of soap in a hotel pool and said, "watch how all the blacks move to the other side." That was their mentality growing up in the late 60's -70's in Chicago.

My grandfather loved the Bears but hated the Bulls because it was a "N game" I asked him once as a kid, what about Payton? He's black and you cheer for him every Sunday. He gave me a look of disapproval and didn't answer the question. Said something about how we come to his house and aggravate him, then yell at our mom to teach us better.

I chose to break the cycle of racism and erase the hate from my bloodline. Now my kids, 2 white and 1 mixed don't see colors but human beings. It's not about white privilege, black lives, or any other rhetoric they use to keep us divided.

It's about treating each other with respect and helping our neighbors in need. Anything else is just hate speech.

I told my daughter that f@g was a term tossed back and forth constantly as a kid and she was horrified. Then I told her some of the Challenger jokes and she shook her head and walked away. I might of lost the moral high ground that day.

It's about preparing your kids for unforeseen experiences they are going to run into in the real world.

You started it with your hyperbolic, unfounded and unsolicited statements/questions earlier in the thread and now you are acting as if others are being unfair to you. That's really weak.

Unsolicited statements? This is a fucking message board.

What's weak is your inabilty to make counter-argument.

for those throwing up hands pretending Aunt Jemima isn't racially charged, do you remember when Cub fans in the not too distant past surrounded a black columnist and chanted it at her after a game?
