Zippy - where are you moving?

I live about 2 hours south of Lake of the Ozarks.

That's pretty far south. What do you do for a living if I may ask? Reason I'm asking is I want to move somewhere nice and quiet and not too expensive in a few years.

Teacher.

Southern Missouri is quiet and inexpensive.

We don’t live down there, it’s a small cabin in Osage Beach. Just looking for something closer.

that's nice. most of the chicago ppl moved out to more quieter places in the midwest. good move. probably a better quality of life without the hustle and bustle.

my sister likes it in suburban KC. But she's very conservative. she was afraid of me renting a car and driving around the state during my stay. she's paranoid about BLM. i'm like i don't give a fuck. i'm getting a car and going to get lost and drive. visit places. nobody is going to do shit anyway.

I noticed maybe the chicago news has scared a lot of people all these years into becoming paranoid. my family is completely full of parnoids. like scared shitless about the slightest thing. don't do that, dont do this, even if the chances are like 1 in a million something bad would happen to you.

good i got out of there and decided to live somewhat of a freer life.

Actually if you decide you like the lake there are some very affordable lakefront properties further down the lake (Gravois Mills, Sunrise Beach, etc.) Low taxes and it’s actually very quiet and peaceful in those areas.

Much milder. They get a bit of snow but it doesn’t usually stick more than a few days. The lake doesn’t even freeze so you can leave your dock in year round which is nice.

I would say that in the last 5 years combined we have maybe had a total of 20 inches of snow here where I live. Now we do get some ice/freezing rain that sucks at times.

Yep. Many of the driveways around the lake are very sloped and I remember my brother being stuck at home because he couldn’t get his car out of the garage and up the hill to the street until the ice melted.

yeah that is the case here too. We do not have that much of a slope on our driveway, but it is enough that if he gets icy you cannot get out. It is crazy. No snow anywhere yet you cannot get out at all.

Also in August it is always 90% humidity and you feel like you just want to die as opposed to leaving your air conditioning.

KC is boring. Known for its BBQ so if you like that, go for it.

Lake of the Ozarks are great. Definitely check that out.

Seriously dude. The answer to nearly every question you ask on the board can be found here with like 5 seconds of searching; https://www.google.com/

Q39 and Jack Stacks were last two BBQ places I went to there and I had zero complaints about either. I haven’t done much else in the way of culture around there.

Don't live in fear. It is probably better than where you have currently been.

where's the best gas at a bbq station you've been to?

They do have a pretty good 92 octane there at Joe's.

Going to be traveling in July w/ my son to visit my sister in Houston and my other sister in kc.

I know all about houston from my last visit there but not much about KC and Western Missouri.

For your weary travelers on this forum, what destinations do you recommend?

I'm for sure going to try out some KC ribs. So some good KC rib joints to recommend would be great. I hear the state is somewhat open so if I can dine in and eat that's cool but take out is fine too.

What about things to do? I got Lake of the Ozarks on the list so I can visit the carnage Wendy and Marty Byrde have done. I hope things are open there to do a 1 day driving trip down there, see the sights, grab some food, and come back at the end of the day.

Harry Truman Presidential library is also on the list but it looks like it's closed due to Covid indefinitely.

Any other sites you'd recommend that are maybe 2 hours max driving distance? I know with COVID a lot of things are going to be limited.

btw not going to travel to STL, too far.

Love KC. Used to live near there.

Gates BBQ was my favorite. But I have heard in the last few years it has fallen off some.

Arthur Bryant is good. Jack Stack is good.

Go to the Negro League Museum. A lot of cool stuff there to take in since you are a big baseball fan.

Truman Library is another good place.

WW1 Museum and memorial

American Jazz Museum

Arabian Steamboat Museum

Union Station and the Plaza are popular, but I never really cared that much for them.

There is also a good art museum, but I never went as I don't care for art.

Lake of the Ozarks is a decent place, but you know that the series Ozark was not really filmed there? Everything around the Lake of the Ozarks should be open as most of the state is open now.

Good choice in avoiding St Louis. St Louis sucks.

To piggy back on RFDC...

Jazz Museum/Negro League Baseball Museum are at same location and less than a half mile from Arthur Bryant's (Love the rib tips)

Jack Stack's Burnt Ends and Cheesy Corn are great, I enjoy going to their Freight House location which is north of Union Station and the WWI Museum (which is currently open)

Joe's is great... (www.joeskc.com) The Z-Man and the Rocket Pig sandwiches are my faves.

Boulevard Brewing is in KC on Southwest Boulevard. Cool tour and nice selection.

So first and foremost first impressions of KCK and KCM (just learned that nyuk nyuk nyuk).

Are you ppl here fucking crazy?!?!?! Nobody wears a mask or is social distancing! We went to a mall and a few public places and more ppl were not wearing masks than were! I’m talking like 80/20 no mask!

Striked up some convo w some locals (my mask on) and one guy said chuckling ‘were a trump state , we don’t believe in masks ‘. Another guy said ppl don’t take it serious here.

Wow! This is truly a culture shock! And I sort of get the stigma MSM was describing in some states where ppl who wear masks are sort of looked down upon. I feel it! No fake news here CNN.

And not many automatic doors Or soap/faucets here. You got to touch everything publicly to open or operate it! Damn I’m glad I brought gloves but they’ll only last me 2 days.

So surprising !

Drive by royals and chiefs stadiums on the HW.

They look fabulous ! Especially how Royals stadium is wide open you can see the grandstands behind home plate.

Beats Seattle baseball/football combo which going in thought was the most aesthetically pleasing from a city view standpoint.

Wear mask, wash your hands.....you will be fine.

You gotta see the Negro league museum while in town.
