I don't think there's a no doubter choice, it's between Moncada, Giolito, and Baez though. Although we should trust video games ratings where The Show has a top 5 of Baez at 86, Bryant 84, Rizzo 83, Grandal 82, and Yu and Abreu at 81.

If Baez is the answer, you have a shitty group of players. People get woozy over the flashy plays and miss all the holes in his game, which became more glaring when he was moved to the tougher defensive position.

Baez isn't even the best SS in this city. It's ridiculous that the AL batting champion would get overlooked in comparison.

Everyone jumping on Robert "by the end of the season" needs to slow their roll as well. It may be true by the end of 2021.

Yoan Moncada is the best player in this city. Eloy Jimenez will be the best at the end of 2020

Baez is the best SS in the city and deep down you know it. Timmmayyyy may overtake him at some point, but that is not the case right now.

Thinking more about this, it cannot be Eloy in the future either unless he takes a huge leap on defense.

I would say it is Baez and Moncada 1 and 2.

Robert may fly past both of them in the near future as he appears to be a complete player.

Baez is still a clear #1....6.0 WAR for 2019 and plays a stellar SS. Moncada is #2. Rizzo is #3. I'm not sure if we'll see Moncada continue to get better, but we know that Eloy and Robert could easily surpass Baez any season now.

I still can't wait to see of Krystal Bryant rebounds

Giolito 5.7 WAR last season.

I think it is pretty clear cut that he is the best pitcher in Chicago going into the season. But it is really hard to consider a guy that goes every 5 days as the best baseball player in the city. So I would put several others ahead of him.

Short of putting up Sale or 2015 Arrietta numbers, I don't really disagree. I was just pointing out that if we're using WAR, it's may not be quite as clear-cut as w72 made it out to be.

Valid point, Frank. That's impressive. TIMMAY WAR was only 3.7....I don't think that factors in defense, but who knows. I like Timmay, but Moncada has more value and their both going to get passed up by Robert and Eloy.

I still struggle with Timmay's defense. You cannot have that poor to of a glove as your starting SS.

Maybe.. I don't put any stock into WAR..its a nerd stat that puts way too much emphasis on pitchers K's.

Putting stock into WAR is fine. Putting ALL of you stock into WAR is foolish. The "nerd stats" combined with the traditional stats paint a much clearly picture for just about everybody.

There's also your eyeballs and intangibles. Baez is a dynamic player along with being talented.

but the reality is Baez took a dip defensively as a SS and was a worse offensive player almost across the board. He also dropped from 160 games played to 138.

Despite this his WAR rose from 5.8 in a superior 2018 year to 6 in an inferior 2019, fueled entirely by the internal biases of WAR in his move to SS

Tim Anderson was not a good fielder, but he has every bit the dynamism of Baez while being his superior in most offensive categories. I'll take the offensively superior guy unless the superior defender is something spectacular.

Tim has cost us some games at SS. I'm fine with his glove, I'm not fine with his lackadaisical throws. It annoys me because it's so fixable. Fix that shit and you have an argument.

Just look at oWAR then. Baez oWAR dropped from 5.5 to 3.4. Anderson went from 2.3 to 4.7.

Then again, Baez' 3.3 dWAR is "something spectacular."

Take the Sox blinders off....Baez is really fucking good. Accept it.
I also take pride in the potential he will be surpassed by Eloy or Robert or both....doesn't change the fact that Baez is the best in the city right now. He's earned it.

Timmy is a butcher defensively. There's no other way to describe him.

1a Robert
1b Moncada
1c Eloy

Is there a Cub that would even make the top 5 right now?

I agree, but in a vaccuum of this season only Hendricks has been the best SP in Chicago so far.
