According to the WSCR pending his approval the Sox get Jr.

Unless you are going to sit Thome, Konerko or Swisher, who's the odd man out? I understand the need for some more offense, but what are you going to do here now?

I dont see how this trade makes sense and didnt JR. turn down a trade to the chisox a few years ago? Griffey, 36, is batting .245 this season with a .355 on-base percentage, 15 home runs and 53 RBIs and has not played CF since 2006 due to injurys.

Sorta the same as edmonds, low risk, high reward, but if they gave up something decent to get him, I dont like this deal.

Can Griffey play center anymore? With Dye in right and Griffey in center, the outfield defense becomes pretty poor.

And Griffey's bat isn't exactly all star caliber at this point in his career.

Guessing Cinci just wanted out from the money owed. Probably gave up a churro

Is Steve Stone going to add this into his constant salary analysis?

My only guess would be don't be surprised when Orlando Cabrera and and OF are going out of town later today. Otherwise, like I and Vann mentioned, this makes no sense.

I would think Cabrera's defense at SS is more important than ever now with that OF getting very old.

All in all, assuming they just bought Griffey without having to give up a prospect of value, I'm ok with this - Konerko is either washed up or injured and he's not helping. I would prefer Griffey to play a corner OF spot, but I'd rather see him in the lineup that Konerko, and move Swisher to 1B...

There is no way that Griffey plays center, unless you want the ERA of your pitchers to go up by about a point.

Hes not playing center. There will have to be another move to get rid of some of the garbage. To me, this move sucks, Griffey is average at best, I think he sucks now, personally.

In an ideal world, you wouldn't have Thome and you could slide Griffey in the DH slot or RF and move Dye there. Now, you just have a logjam.

Yep, it's a log jam.

I am assuming we'll see something like this - Griffey will be in CF probably most of the time for the remainder of the season (assuming he doesn't get hurt). They won't overplay him though - meaning he'll play about 5 days a week. On the other days, I'd expect to see Swisher back out there, and Konerko getting time at 1B. I can also see Konerko getting some AB's out of the DH spot if there's a tough matchup for Thome. In short, I think we'll see a lot of mixing and matching based on matchups, but Griffey will get most of the starts in CF, Swisher at 1B, and Thome at DH, with Konerko filling in to keep these guys fresh.

He is playing CF - Quentin and Dye aren't going anywhere, and they aren't playing CF either.

Thome isn't being traded either.

That's a poor idea. Any added benefit you're going to get from his bat is going to be lost on the field. He can handle the corner spots ably still, but center is a stretch.

OK, I really do not get this. How does this make the Sox a better team. Unless Konerko is part of the deal, this makes no sense. If they gave up more than low-level prospects, this deal is stupid. At this point in his career, Griffey is nothing more than a glorified Swisher who has not played CF in years. Plus, he is made of glass. We will see what they give up.

He is hitting .245 with 15 hr and 53 rbi. He is not exactly lighting the world on fire.

I can't think of one reason why this is a good idea for the Sox. He's no better than what they're marching out there already.

I don't disagree. Griffey in CF makes me very nervous.....Unless something changes with the makeup of the roster today, there's no other place for him.

We will see. If they got him to play center, it was a really bad trade. He can't play center anymore, his legs aren't healthy enough. There has to be another move at least.

It's still an improvement in the lineup if you swing Swisher to 1st. It's basically Griffey for Konerko, so you're getting 30 percentage points on the batting average (40 points OBP), a little more pop, and more flexibility in general. 40 points OBP means about one extra baserunner every five games, and with his bat you'll probably get about 5 more HRs than you otherwise would.

For that extra hit or two every week, you're going to be letting an extra hit or two fall in once a week. In center, that's going to mean more gappers. You can pull him late in games, and I'm sure they will. But it's still only a wash once you take defense into account. Plus they gave something up for him, even if it wasn't much.

Wouldn't Griffey taking the Captians place in the lineup disrupt "Clubhouse Chemistry" ?

Score is reporting a reliever may be included also, Weathers or Affeldt. To me, those 2 guys suck also.

His .245 average will fit in just perfect in the Sox lineup :P .

Seriously though, even as a Cub fan, I don't understand this trade from the White Sox point of view. Now if this was back in 2005 or whatever year it was when they almost traded for him, I'd understand it. I think this is just Kenny trying to make a move just to make a move.

Weathers sucks. Affeldt can be decent.

I like it, but I think the people in Cincinnati may like it more!

I bet Brian Anderson could at least do those numbers if they played him, plus he is a better OF'er at this point IMO.

I like it. Even the small chance that Griffey becomes his old self even for half a season is worth it. I doubt the Sox are really giving up anything that matters. It wouldn't be the first time that a player who was presumably on the downside of his career was able to turn things around.

Maybe Griffey will do in Chicago what Frank Thomas did after leaving.

It's not low-risk if he's going to be playing center regularly. Once again, unless he REALLY reverses form at the plate, they're going to be giving away whatever production he adds by all the extra hits in center.

One thing I hadn't heard about but could see the Sox trying is moving Dye to first and playing Griffey in right. I've seen stranger things.

Baseball Prospectus has Swisher at one run below average defensively in center field this year; Griffey is seventeen runs under average. That's a pretty huge difference defensively. Griffey has been playing a below-average right field defensively. Moving him to center could be a disaster.

Dye to first would make more sense, if he can hack it at the position (he probably could.)

Williams would have to be crazy to guarantee Jr at 16.5 million next year.

I'd like to see how this all shakes out before i bother analyzing it. I cannot imagine it will simply be Griffey without any other move.
