I'd like to see how this all shakes out before i bother analyzing it. I cannot imagine it will simply be Griffey without any other move.

Agreed. And as many of you have already mentioned, I would have to guess that Paulie for Junior has to be the deal.

Saw this on MLBTRADERUMORS.COM.

The deal awaits Griffey's approval, but it'd be for Danny Richar and Nick Masset according to Danny Knobler. The Reds will hopefully be willing to kick in some cash for Junior to approve the deal if necessary.

No way Konerko waives no trade to go to that shitty organization.

Masset is the only one you wonder if it is the right move but with Broadway, Richard seemingly on the way up, you can afford to lose him.

10:25am: Per Ken Rosenthal, Griffey approved the trade. It might involve $1MM+ in cash somehow.

Why would the Reds have wanted Konerko when they have a young player like Votto playing first?

The Reds are picking up ALL of the remaining $4 million due to Griffey. Won't cost the Sox a dime.

I like this trade. It's reminiscent of the Cubs recent trade... :)

Low risk, high reward. You didn't have to give up any starters or 'amazing' prospects so...yeah, no worries. If it works, great, if it doesn't let his ass go after the season.

Nick Masset & Danny Richar for Griffey (+ $4 mil.)?

I'll worry about the logjam later. I don't think it's much to give up, even for a fading asset.

Quote:
Ken Griffey Jr. has been traded to the Chicago White Sox, CBSSports.com confirmed Thursday. The deal is still awaiting Griffey's approval, so it has yet to be announced.

The Cincinnati Reds will get infielder Danny Richar and right-handed pitcher Nick Masset in the deal, according to sources. Cincinnati will also pay the remaining $4 million on Griffey's contract.

It's believed the White Sox intend to play the 38-year-old Griffey in center field, a position he hasn't played since 2006. The slumping Nick Swisher would move to first base, sharing time with Paul Konerko, whose own slump has been even worse.

I am going to wait until the deadline to see where this is going, but i can't say I'm overly excited about this trade. I guess Anderson has to go back down because Wise is out of options I believe.

When everyone is talking about Griffey struggling, I only wish that Swisher or Konerko were struggling as much as he is. .255 15 HRs 53 RBIs OPS of .787

The deal is now waiting for the commissioners approval.

It seems like a good deal on the surface, considering that all the White Sox traded the Reds are second baseman Danny Richar & long reliever Nick Masset to get Ken Griffey, Jr. I tend to believe another deal is in the works, because if Griffey plays centerfield, something tells me Brian Anderson and/or DeWayne Wise might be the odd man out. I also wonder if Jerry Owens is no longer the Sox centerfielder of the future. There's also talk about possibly trading Nick Swisher back to Oakland for reliever Huston Street, talk about shifting Jermaine Dye to first base to move Ken Jr. to right, and even splitting DH duties between Jim Thome & Paul Konerko. Another move is in the cards...

So it will cost the Sox 4 million for the buyout at the end of year though right?

When was he? He wasn't even guaranteed a job in spring training.

The Nick Swisher trade talk is interesting, but it sounds like Steve Stone just throwing out his own speculation.

I also hope for one more move today.

If they trade Swisher back to Oakland, Hawk would be crushed.

We're talkin'...

From Maine to San Diego.
Talkin'...

Mattingly and Canseco.

Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw.

We're talkin' Homer...

I don't think this is that big of a deal. He's not much of a hitter any more. He's gonna suck on defense in center.

I'll bet Kenny has something else going on. He's gonna make another trade.

White Sox Release...

WHITE SOX ACQUIRE FUTURE HALL OF FAMER KEN GRIFFEY JR.
MINNEAPOLIS - The Chicago White Sox have acquired Hall of Fame-bound outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. and cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar.
Griffey, 38, is a former American League Most Valuable Player (1997) and 13-time All-Star. The left-handed slugger hit career home run No. 600 on June 9 of this season, and his home run total of 608 ranks sixth all-time in Major League Baseball history. Griffey has won seven Louisville Silver Slugger Awards and 10 Rawlings Gold Gloves during his 20-year career with Seattle (1989-99) and Cincinnati (2000-08).
"Our intent is to win the American League Central division and ultimately, to win another World Series championship," said Ken Williams, White Sox general manager. "Adding a player the caliber of Ken Griffey Jr. gives us a better chance to realize those goals. Griffey's addition gives Ozzie (Guillen) more flexibility. Ozzie has the opportunity to field his best team - offensively and defensively - on a day-to-day basis over the next two months, and this gives us the chance to keep some of our middle of the order hitters fresh and producing down the stretch. I spoke with Ken, and he is excited to be coming to Chicago to try and help us reach the postseason."
Griffey, who has hit safely in his last 12 games with the Reds (.318,
14-44) and owns a .927 on-base plus slugging percentage in July, is batting .245 (88-359) with 15 home runs, 53 RBI and a .355 on-base percentage in 102 games with Cincinnati in 2008. In 2007, Griffey hit .277 (146-528) with 30 home runs and 93 RBI in 144 games with the Reds.
Griffey, who is expected to join the White Sox Friday in Kansas City, is signed through 2008 with a club option for 2009. He will wear uniform No. 17.
Over his career, Griffey has hit .288 (2,646-9,185) with 608 home runs and 1,754 RBI in 2,480 games. Currently 354 hits shy of 3,000 for his career, Griffey is one extra-base hit behind Ty Cobb (1,140) for 10th on the all-time list and ranks 16th in RBI. Griffey leads all active major leaguers in home runs, multihomer games (55), hits, total bases (5,039), runs (1,596) and extra-base hits (1,139).
Griffey has led the league in home runs four times and has topped 50 home runs in a season twice, hitting 56 with Seattle in 1997 and 1998. He led the league in RBI in 1997 with a career-high 147 and has topped 100 RBI eight times. A member of baseball's All-Century Team, he has homered in 43 ballparks over his career (including all existing) to tie for second most all-time.
Masset was 1-0 with one save and a 4.63 ERA (23 ER/44.2 IP) in 32 games with the White Sox in 2008. The 26-year-old right-hander is 3-3 with one save and a 5.63 ERA (58 ER/92.2 IP) in 67 career games in the major leagues with Texas (2006) and the White Sox (2007-08).
Richar, 25, is hitting .262 with nine home runs, 39 RBI and 11 stolen bases with Class AAA Charlotte in 2008. The second baseman batted .230 with six home runs and 15 RBI in 56 games with the White Sox in 2007.

Well, nothing else happened. I guess the Sox have to cut Wise now.

Now we have absolutly no speed on the bench. Nobody can come in to steal a base late in a game if we need it.

The team is OLD. Plus we're a long ball team. Adding one young speedster will help and would be great for the future. That's going to cost us BIG. HOWEVER another big bat for FREE in this line-up is fine considering PK couldn't hit a barn w/ his bat right now.

If Kenny really thinks we have a shot at the WS this year it's not a bad move IMO.

I wonder how Dusty is taking this trade? He probably feels like his horses are all gone. Or maybe he's happy becuase he can say someone else waived the white flag before he did for once in his career.

I posted this in the other thread, but I think it warrants a mention here too. Rick is right, Kenny Williams is the best GM in Chicago right now:

Kenny Williams has turned Brandon freaking McCarthy into John Danks and Ken Griffery Jr. 'Nuff said.
