Defensively, without a doubt. Griffey gives you a little more offensively, but he probably also won't be willing to sit often either, so that could be a wash. The proof will be in the results.

That's a tough argument to make, Fools, after Edmonds hits 2 homers and 5 RBIs.

He's still good enough. He could break down but he isn't playing every day and I'd take my chances on keeping him healthy.

Let's not give too much credit here to Williams or Hendry.

Both players are past great players who are past their prime. They were performing poorly in poor destinations and they were available for little to nothing. It was like putting a $10 chip on a roulette board. You might hit and leave the table with 100's of dollars or you might lose your bet. It was a low risk/high reward gamble.

It was a good move taking advantage of an opportunity, but both these cases are simply gambles that players return to old form.

Hendry deserves credit for a lot on this team, but Edmonds was much more luck than skill. If Griffey contributes greatly, the same will be true for the Sox.

It's one kind of gamble to bring a guy in and hope he stays healthy enough to produce.

It's a whole other kind of gamble to bring a guy like Griffey in and pray he can play CF again.

One is a bit more dangerous and foolish of a gamble than the other if you ask me. You can decide which is the better gamble.

They didn't trade away the current CF, or even the backup CF. The Sox could cut him tomorrow and be out two players who weren't really factors.
Brian Anderson is still here. Nick Swisher is still here. The worst case scenario is that he becomes the best pinch hitter on the team. It also provides insurance if Thome or Konerko go down.

They got something for nearly nothing. They could cut Griffey tomorrow and the makeup of the team hasn't really changed.

The Sox have a chance that Griffey finds his old form for a few months and adds a ton of firepower. If not, Brian Anderson returns to the starting lineup.

Why didn't the Cubs offer up a minor leaguer for Carlos Quentin the way Williams does?

Point is, they both make good moves....and bad moves.

But they are not going to cut him tomorrow. They are going to play him for at least a week or two, probably longer during the August/Sept. pennant drive in CF. I think it's a gamble and more of one than an Edmonds try out in May.

I agree with Darko. I've gone 180 on Edmonds, too. He's still a hot dog, but he's getting the yob done.

I am on record here somewhere saying Edmonds is a pud and has nothing left. I wanted nothing to do with him and said Hendry was a fool.

However, this crow tastes pretty good. I first braised it and then roasted it at 500' to crisp the skin up nicely. My herb, wild mushroom and cornbread stuffing complements the crow perfectly.

Agreed, but if Griffey shows himself to be a major defensive liability I am sure they would move him to the bench, especially when the Sox have a lead and defense will really matter. If Griffey starts hitting closer to .300, he will more than make up for his defensive deficiencies.

Edmonds was less of a gamble, but I see the adding of Ken Griffey as something that only adds options.

The Sox don't need Ken Griffey Jr. to be great. It would be nice if he sees an increase in productivity, but they can revert to the old lineup if need be. They have no allegiance to Griffey as he will be gone after this year anyways.

I don't see any way how this makes the White Sox worse, unless Griffey is given a guaranteed starting spot for the whole season no matter how poorly he performs. The Sox are basically renting him for a few months so I doubt they will worry about benching him if things don't work out.

As for his defense, he has been really solid, and I haven't seen too many of his patented "fake dives." Maybe because he's getting older.

One thing I have noticed, is that he always uses 2 hands to catch routine fly balls, and catches them right in front of his face. Something I wish he would teach to Soriano, who always uses one hand way off to the side of his body.

i'm with rick on this, i don't see this as a bad move at all.

i just wonder what griffey's going to do at the end of this season.
