He will surprisingly make it the rest of this season and playoff run without a DL appearance even though he might need a couple days off to rest up a few times. Also, someone will bump this thread in 3 weeks when he does end up on the DL or out for the season to say I told you so.

Griffey will hit .346 in the final months of the year, provide stellar outfield defense, and lead the White Sox to a WS Championship.

he'll be fine...anyone who's played baseball will tell you CF is an easier position to play (besides the extra running) due to seeing the ball off the bat better and therefore being able to take better routes...

not sure how CF being an "easier" position correlates to separating your should trying to catch the ball of the wall?? I'll bump this in 2 weeks.

I have played baseball, and the outfield at that, and I find this reasoning pure BS. You may at times see the ball better, but you also have a lot more ground to cover and a lot more chances for a pulled hammy

If that is true, why was Cincy playing Grif in the corner? Why do other older guys end up moving to the corner, if it is so much easier?

As far as the pool goes, I will go August 12th.

Yes there's more running in CF...I said that in my post...since when did Cincinnati become the fount of wisdom? Last time I checked they were bad and putting Griffey in right hasn't exactly kept him injury free...he was hurt in Wrigley due to incorrectly judging a fly ball and then having to come in too hard...but we'll see...

BigFan, speaking as a Cubs fan and internet weirdo I cannot help but notice the bad juju you're putting out there for the Cubs. I mean, an injury poll for the new Sox player is like, when that juju comes back around it could be nasty. We gotta keep the faith.

He won't get hurt, but he'll strike out in the bottom of the 9th in game 7 of the World Series with the bases loaded and two outs facing Kerry Wood.

I think "Griff" gets hurt at what Ed Farmer calls "Mount Davis" in Oakland, and I think he'll fall on those football lines trying to make a diving catch the third week in August...

Actually Playing CF is the harder of the OF positions due to no angle to judge balls hit right at you as to the depth.

So Griff has not played CF is 5 years, but all of a sudden he is ready?

This would apply to all outfield positions if the ball is hit directly at you.

Wasn't Kenny an outfielder? Shouldn't he know that it's the toughest of the three positions? I think he's just full of Mariotti when he says playing Center is the easiest.

I just saw Kenny's thoughts on TV, and I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't parroting what he said as I hadn't seen it until now. I personally think CF is easier as fewer balls are hit right at you and the speed on the ball is much less than the corners, which again allows the outfielder to get a better track on the ball. If Griff gets hurt, I don't know that it will be due to a position shift. Plus, there's two walls to run into in left and right, only one in center...

I don't understand all this "center is easier" discussion. It's just not. Your best OF defender is in center, your liabilities are in the corners. There's a reason that Adam Dunn, Barry Bonds and Ryan Klesko were moved to corner outfield positions. Imagine Barry Bonds in center. It's not easier. It's the most important outfield position, and it's the hardest to fill. All this "center is easy" talk sounds like post-hoc rationalization to me.

Griffey in center has the potential to be an unmitigated disaster. I hope he ends up at 1st before it's all said and done.

The Center Fielder is also the leader of the outfield. He has to be responsible for calling off the other fielders if he thinks he can get the ball and has to cover the most real estate. Also, the Center Fielder is the one who keeps track of the number of outs in the inning, and usually signals the other two to make sure they got it.

obviously I'm in the minority on this one. Bonds did start in left due to defensive liabilities, and generally left is reserved for bad defensive players, but right has some very good defensive players and calls for the best arm on the field...I'll digress for now.

If Adam Dunn wasn't a Red, Griffey would have been in left. He doesn't have a right fielder's arm. Typically, the reason you put the big arm in right is to make the throw to 3rd on sacrifice flies. He was a below average right fielder defensively. Uh oh.

in the interest of full disclosure, I am a Cubs fan...and no, Griffey doesn't have a very good arm. First base would be a tough transition, no?

Could be, but it's an easy position defensively, and you're not responsible for much range. Plus, he's left-handed, which helps. Playing Griffey in center and Swisher at 1st strikes me as ass-backwards.

IF you have good OF instincts, CF is by far the easiest to play. CF is all about getting good jumps and taking a direct line to the ball. The ball gets on you faster in the corner spots and it slices much more when hit by the opposite handed hitter (i.e. a lefty hitting it to left or a righty hitting it to right). Juniors skills have obviously declined but his instincts should still be good so I think he can be an average center fielder.

1st is easier overall but it takes a while to learn how to scoop bad throws, whereas Swisher already has experience there...again, I digress on this one, I appear to be in the minority...
