NBA athletes owe fans nothing says ESPN's Howard Bryant.

To Howard and the players; Fellas, Hawk doesn't watch anyway. He doesn't give a fatratsass whether you play. Hell, he celebrates it.

Get your shit together, NBA. This "Adam Silver is a genius" thing is over, that's for sure.

Really? That's why were burning down cities? The kid was arrested eight hours too late?

What a bunch of infants. Seriously.

None of us are shocked they weren't going to boycott the rest of the season.

Agreed.

It's fascinating to see players around sports learn to flex their power.

Just what we need.....more idiot celebrities flexing their power and consistently getting things wrong.

I'm sorry that's your narrow takeaway. I was looking at the decisions from a broader perspective. In the future players could choose not to play for any XYZ reason and leagues/owners/fans are at their mercy. They've always been but players rarely have flexed their muscles like they are now.

I don't know. It's why this player empowerment movement is fascinating. People love professional sports. They say they won't watch but I'm not sure I believe them.

Look at Hawger. Yesterday he was all pissed off and having a meltdown. Today he's fine because playoffs are back on.

There are millions of people willing to step in who wouldn't have this petulant, shitty attitude. The irony of a bunch of millionaire athletes, jobs that only fifty years ago required an off-season job as supplemental income, denouncing how broken America is and how it doesn't work for them  You have gotta be shitting me.

Either way pull a bunch of D-1 athletes up. College football is great, everyone loves it. There's more than enough talent, and in any case I am getting a little bored of "New fast guy! Faster than the last fast guy! Watch as everyone flails around gameplanning for the fast guy!", I dont need the best athletes to be a giant Bears homer.

It's nice to see they stand for justice as long as it doesn't affect them monetarily in any way.

I.E. China

It actually would have been cool if they demanded that their social justice statements on the uniform include whatever they want (except profanity etc) instead of being limited to a list of approved messages.

Viewership of the NBA in the United States has dropped by half in the last ten years.

Baseball and NFL hold steady or grow most years though. College football grows like a weed, people cant get enough of it.

Bad take. If hundreds of players in each sports were replaced with the best guys they could find off the streets sports would fucking suck. But keep convincing yourself you would watch a league where the best QB is Mike Glennon

I am a person that enjoys watching college football and college basketball more than the NFL or NBA. I think part of that is where I grew up, there were no local pro teams so college was more preferred.

None of the quarterbacks would quit the league. You're telling me Tom Brady cares? Tom Brady is so wrapped up in his own world he doesn't give a shit. You either have maniacs like that or guys like Mahomes who derive such a childlike joy from throwing around the pigskin that nothing would take it away from them (and he's got five hundred million reasons to keep at it, btw).

And college football is packed with shitty quarterbacks anyways who look great. Was anyone really bored watching Troy Smith at OSU or Johnny Football at A&M?

Sports are rarely about the spectacle. Every so often they are, the Marshawn Lynch thunderous run or the OBJ catch or Hester's returns, but those moments come only a handful a times each season. What keeps people tuning is the human drama and the Us vs. Them mentality of "my team". If the receivers all ran a 4.5 instead of a 4.4 it would not really affect the true reasons football is the national obsession.

Didn't stop interest in MLB, the NFL, and NCAAs when they were segregated, though, so I am not totally sure what I think about this.

But, I mean, I see your point, and RR's.

It sure killed interest when the NFL players struck in '87. Hell, it killed the Ditka led Bears teams.

I watched every single Bears game the year their leading receiver was Kendall Wright. I'm not going to ignore Bears football because of something as trivial as mediocre talent. If that were really the determining factor in my fandom I would've given up on being a Bears fan at around age twelve.

There's like 10 guys who talk NBA here. I shrug because I like what I like. But when the league itself tells me to my face that I'm not important, I perk up a bit and say, "do you really mean that?" I sure hope not.

Replacement players in baseball might actually make it better...if the pitchers are topping out at 90, I bet more balls would be put in play.

Problem is, the guys that struggle to hit even them will be the other group of guys coming up. Enjoy your Kane Co. Cougars, I'll pass.

The demographics of baseball tell the story. There is really no way they stop playing baseball. It was cute for a day but these guys aren't going to give up all that money for the one black guy on their team, come on. A third of the league doesn't speak english.

Its like Canadian Ice Soccer, which couldn't even be bothered to pretend to care.

The sports at threat from this are primarily the NBA and maybe the NFL.
