It's time for Howry to join Eyre on the scrap heap.

This is the second time in a week where Lou's love for Howry has cost the Cubs a lead. Walk Lee, I don't care if Berkman might pinch hit, Lee has killed the Cubs. WALK HIM

And of course Lou leaves in HR Howry to face Lee. This is stupid on so many levels. Can someone please slap Lou and tell him Howry is no good. Eyre is gone, time for Howry to follow.

Yeah, I don't get it. First of all, Howry is not good. What will it take to convince the Cubs of that obvious fact? Every pitch is a homer?

Second, utilize the intentional walk. It exists for a reason. Lee was put on earth to hit Cubs pitching. Walk him with first base open. Every time. Walk him.

Should this game go into extra innings, the Cubs may be hurting for pinch-hitters. I hate wasting so many players in such a short period of time.

I hear Wood is warming up to come in. I hope he doesn't overthrow and get wild. He hasn't pitched in 3 weeks, and I'm guessing the Astros will be taking a strike.

i was listening to pat & ron, it looked to them that lou was telling howry "don't give him anything to hit", and maybe go after him on the first pitch and if he doesn't bite then walk him.

i wouldn't have even tried going after him, but jesus you throw the guy a cookie on the FIRST PITCH?

howry is absolutely useless.

I was reading some power-rankings yesterday, and the guy who did the one ranking had the Cubs moving up to 2. He mentioned in the notes how the Cubs did ok without Soriano, but they're much better with him. Very true. This team is much better with his bat.

Yeah well Howry got the win, so he must be pretty good.

It's part of his long-term strategy: he can just blow the lead every time he comes in, and that way he gets the win if the Cubs come back. He figures by the end of the year to lead the Cubs in wins, and get a big contract in the off-season.

perhaps in the regular season, but he will be worthless in the playoffs if past history is any indicator. A team has yet to win a WS with Soriano as its leadoff hitter...I'm not pulling a Bernstein with Uribe, I'm only pointing out the statistical reality as a Cubs fan...

Did anyone catch Lou's press conference after the game? I only caught part of it, did anyone ask Lou about his decision to pitch to Lee?

I did hear the question to Lou about commenting on the lighting display yesterday

I don't think it is with Soriano. Soriano is such an unusual and streaky hitter; he can hit almost any pitch, but he can miss almost any pitch. The sample size is pretty small, isn't it?

I take it back. I just looked up the stats; he has 160 postseason at bats, and is batting .225 with 18 RBI and 4 HR. Still, I don't know that that's all that indicative of his future postseason success.

it is becoming very clear that soriano is the offensive lifeblood of this team. they are a completely different team with him than they are without him. he will never be patient, he will never get many walks, he will likely never be very good in the field, but that son of a bitch doesnt miss too often when they make mistakes in the strike zone against him. i couldnt believe that brocail was anywhere NEAR the plate on that 1-2 pitch today, but soriano was waiting for that mistake.

you can have your gold glove outfielders all you want, ill take the occasional boneheaded error and the aggravating fancy little hop-catch he does gladly for what he brings to this team offensively. no slow start off of the disabled list this time back.

It helps too, when Soriano is actually able to run at full speed, which I think he is close to now.

Gimpy, ball-droppy Soriano was hard to watch.

Gotta agree with this one. Soriano, if 100% healthy, could be scary good down the stretch... or he could be one popped hammy from being less than useless.
The beginning of the year with his sub Mendoza BA followed by his hoppy badness was maddening when you knew what was possible. We may now be getting a glimpse of the 40/40 potential. When healthy, Soriano still scares the spit out of starting pitching (say that ten times fast). He's GOT to stay healthy for the Cubs to compete in October.

True Kerchun', but this same thing can be said about any MLB player. That being said, your point about Sori' being oft-injured and possibly prone to it was well taken. I'll just be content to watch him terrorize opponents right now though!

Yeah, that's true.
This is shaping up to be a scary good stretch for him. May the Cubs ride it all the way to October! :drunken:

I'll politely (and sadly as a Cubs fan) disagree with you...

if they are dependant upon Soriano, then as presently constituted I see a nice run through the NL and disappointment at some point in the playoffs...I want to believe that they're good without him...

We get it already...Edmonds and Soriano are going to cost the Cubs this year at some point. Any one else you wanna add to the list?

I am sure we would have a much better shot this year with Lofton and Houfpair in the OF.
