Hope no one here ever needs major work done on your teeth. I lost my insurance due to a job change so I bought my own. They claimed cleanings were "100" covered twice a year. Ended up getting a bill for 170 bucks because my dentist apparently "charged too much". I have 2 molars that need crowns eventually (this insurance has a 12 month wait for major procedures) but I cancelled the insurance. I can't trust them now to cover anything. A crown is 1200 bucks. Are these dental savings plans any good? At this point I'd rather go to UIC dental school to have students do the crowns. Paying 2400 dollars for two crowns is ridiculous. Too many games being played. I wonder if any dentists give a big discount if you pay all cash. Any ideas or tips?

PS: I was a severe teeth grinder (that's why I need crowns) and feel free to mock me for being "poor". I love when you guys do that.

The dental school thing is absolutely fine. They are supervised pretty strictly.

All medical bills are negotiable if you are paying cash. The insurance companies negotiate your bills down for you. If you don’t have one negotiating the bill you need to do it yourself.

The fact that your teeth and eyes are for some reason not covered under health insurance is one of the greatest tricks the insurance companies ever pulled on the American public.

especially when dental health has a direct impact on overall health. even getting braces should be included, you get a lot less gum problems with straight teeth that are easier to clean.

Not covered most places, even with universal healthcare.

Major dental work is expensive, In my experience dental insurance covers about half of it. They know they have you by the balls because there is nothing worse than a tooth ache and it's not like you are going to live with it.

I have had dental insurance the last few years and all of my daughters and my wife and I have got free cleanings during that time. And they cover a percentage of everything else. It is not great, but the cleanings alone make it worth it.

Pretty much. It is set up to keep you healthy not looking good. Example you have a shitty tooth? We will pay to have it yanked or a root canal. You want a crown pay half you want a insert pay more. On and on. As far as braces my job had three plans and I chose the one most advantageous for kids when they were in that age range. Changed out of it afterward.

I hope i never have to let another dentist in my mouth again; getting in my mouth is a really exclusive club reserved for chick's who can paint. I hope I can make it at least another 10-15yrs with smooth sailing (at least until I dupe some chick to like me enough to come with me and hold my hand)

i have a family plan that seems crazy expensive but basically costs what it was cost for 2 appts a year for all of us. and the value of having a bunch of other stuff is nice. i have 2 kids that were premies which mean they didn't develop alot of the enamel they needed adn thus are nice and cavitied up.

I think you pay the same amount either with insurance or not- the dentist just makes double if you have coverage.

We switched dentists to a more convenient location when our kids were little, the new guy then wanted to do like ten crowns for me for $5900 (1998-2000ish). Three little kids, no way I could afford that. Have had eight of them done over the last 20 years anyway at about double that cost total to me. The other two teeth I just had pulled, fuck it. I tell people it's from hockey fighting and that I'll be far more popular in prison some day.

The old folks around here who go to Texas in the winter all go over to Mexico for crowns, etc. Pennies on the dollar and the clinics are USA clean and cater to American cash deals.

I have not gone to the dentist in like 25 years.

My teeth are fine.

The whole dental field is a scam.

When my son was young, maybe 8/9, took him for a checkup and they wanted all this stuff done to this teeth. What a crock of bullshit.

This profession rips off people so much with unnecessary work.

Maybe for family... But individual it's literally the same price if you go without insurance and just pay cash for two cleanings a year. The only time it gets cheaper is if there are extras but then you're still paying 70% of that and if you pay cash there's a 20% discount...
