We need to get Dandy Don to sing this one

Turn out the lights
The party's over
They say that all
Good things must end
Call it a night
The party's over

Forbes "contributors" are generally self-promoting shit. A third of this board's members have sufficient credentials.

That said... the number of non-tendered players MLB wide is going to be crazy high, especially with the potential of a labor stoppage or a substantially changed CBA, uncertainty about 2021 revenue, and an overhaul of the minor leagues.

David Bote is going to come out of this looking like a genius for getting his $15M total guaranteed.

2nd and 3rd year arb eligible guys are going to get whacked everywhere. The market is going to be flooded with 28 year olds, especially #6 starter types.

In an extreme world, do the Cubs non-tender a Kris Bryant if there is no trade market because nobody wants the salary even for a rental? It sounds ludicrous. But not unimaginable.

Criminal mismanagement that they got nothing for Schwarber, Bryant and Rizzo when they could have totally re-loaded.

Cubs finances are fine. Just bad money (looks better this year with YU and Heyward right now) in a lot of places. It is not like they refuse to sign guys to big deals.

Ricketts got fucked by the chicago politicans. he's only to blame.

according to murph last year Ricketts was like in 100-500 Million dollar debt w/ the hotel and other projects around the ballpark.

he fucked himself and stopped the purse strings.

not any longer. remember before this year he directed theo to cut salary. he fooled us all w/ the endless streams of revenue. maybe at that time yes, but not any longer. at least another 5 years.

He also didn't see a way where Sinclair would have its bid to buy WGN rejected by the FCC, which threw all the leverage for Marquee's carriage negotiaions into the toilet. Thus, no sell off last winter because they had no TV leverage if they were rebuilding.

As much as I appreciate 2016, I wanted Mark Cuban's bid to be successful because Cuban is just a better businessman.

Spiegs had a solid segment on this the other day. Compared it to what the Nats were going through a couple years ago with Harper.

They talked about teams with $20M+ players and that nobody had more than 4. Talked about the importance of good young players that remain under salary control.

Questions

Do they ride Bryant out, going for it? Do they trade him before next season and get what they can? Do they extend him?

If it's still cut salary they have to trade him this offseason.

If Theo's been told not to spend he's already packing.

but if they win the division this year he can say they achieved a division title during the covid crisis. another notch in his belt.

Dumb article. The list of teams willing to spend on free agents or trade for a big contract will be almost zero. No fans this year and potentially limited fans in stands next year equals big revenue loss even for cheap asses like the whitesox.

Jason Heyward
Yu Darvish
Craig Kimbrel
Tyler Chatwood
Brandon Marrow

Trading for Quintana....NOT trading Schwarber....Jon Lester way out of his prime and getting huge money.

Yes, it's a real shock the Cubs have financial issues.

Lester is the exception. Everybody understood he'd only be a 5th starter this year. It's an accounting trick to defer the money to this year and the $10M "buy out" this off season. Even prorating $7M more onto each of the first three years, it was a solid deal.

And it could be worse, Arte Moreno has the best player in the world in what is probably a fair deal, and he's fucked for the next five years because he grossly overpaid for an aging Pujols. Illich did the same for Miguel Cabrera but he knew he was in his 80s and had money to burn and just wanted to win.

Difference between bad personnel moves and financial troubles. Q and Chatwood gone after this season. That's 23 million. Kimbrel and Lester done after 2021. That's around 40 million. That's between 60 and 65 million in payroll gone after 2021.

The bigger issue isn't that there is trouble ahead. That's the cyclical nature of pro sports for a lot of franchises, Cubs will get some of the bad money off the books naturally and find some prospects. That's how it work.

The real problem is the World Series win wasn't even close to what it was hyped up to be. People barely give a shit. And all those charming things about the Cubs like their rathole stadium and WGN are gone. They're just another franchise now, like the Texas Rangers or Arizona Diamondbacks.

Lester has a $10M buyout so it's more like 38M gone minus what they have to pay a #5 starter.

The salaries roll off relatively quickly as noted above. They own the stadium, much of the revenue generating businesses around it, they have a team worth $3B (paid $700M), and a tv network. Sure, they’ll be hurt like all teams from the lack of fans in and around the park, but this team is well positioned financially for the long term.

Now their on the field prospects are certainly a big question mark.

I wouldn't even call KB young, he's 28. He'll be a FA at 30.

When the Ricketts initially purchased from Zell, wasn't the deal considered historically unique because of the amount of lending upfront? Then I remember hearing how their lump payments had impacts on how their operated financially. How true is all of this and do they still deal with some of these issues or is everything squared away with their loans? I assume none of it matters based on their net worth, but I've always wondered if it was something that got lost with these financially-driven baseball moves.

thats just it... their net worth isn't tied to the loans.. at least they dont operate that way. the only way their personal money matters is if they default on the loans, but if it got to that point they would just sell the team. they would only lose their personal money if the team is worth less than what they bought it for.

I think they bought the Cubs for 900 million. It's now valued over 3 billion.

I get it. Tom is in debt with no money coming in due to the fact that he bought up all of Wrigley Field and now he has no crowds.
