It was a crude comment. Nothing more, nothing less.

It was stupid to post it. You can get fired for crude comments.

Everything else about this is opportunism.

All Bernsie had to say was that it was crass. Oh and sorry.

He isn't paid to say that a sideline reporter is dressed like a porn star.

He didn't say she dressed like a porn star. He said she was dressed like a person covering the AVNs. That's a pretty significant distinction from what you write. Saying she is dressed like a porn star gives some implication of impugning her morality. Dressing like someone who covers the award show journalisticaly only implies that she is not dressing more appropriately for a much more casual gig.

Not exactly. He suggested she was dressed like a host for the AVN awards show, which implies a greater level of involvement in the porn industry than you are attributing to his tweet. His comment thus does engage in a kind of stereotypical connection between women's dress and sexual promiscuity. Nevertheless, the stereotyping is distanced and relatively tame. It certainly doesn't merit termination. Bruce Levine's retweet about Biden/Clinton a couple weeks ago strikes me as far more egregious in its misogynistic characterization of a powerful woman, yet Levine received only minor punishment for his behavior.

That sounds like the Facebook story of a million other discontented women.

Seeing those pictures and reading the comments would make me think she survived cancer or a fairly serous accident. I would never think that was the result of someone poking fun at her outfit.

The Levine stuff, and the Bernstein/Spiegel stuff from before would have me talking to a lawyer if I was Mac.

Maybe there was a zero tolerance policy issued after Levines post.

He's paid to comment on sports to his "guys" audience. It wasn't the smartest comment. It was kinda not nice but it wasn't racist or sexist. He has a history of joking about white men's attire too.
Mac also referred to Scott Podsednik as 'Peter Pan' throughout most of his White Sox tenure, all while rooting for Pods to get on base and steal bases.

Could you imagine if somebody referred to a scrappy leadoff hitter as a "Peter Pan scampering around the outfield" in today's climate? They would meet the Guillotine before the following day's lunch hour.

How does a person covering the AVNs happen to dress? Are they known to dress as sideline reporters dress or porn stars?

Peter pan reference was more based on his perception of Pods the man and not his attire though.

I just don't agree. Legit, working on air guys do these goofy side gigs all the time, like Joe Tessitore with Holey Moley, Adamle with that gladiator show or even Chet with wrestling. What's the difference with taking the AVN gig (and I do have to claim some ignorance about the whole production of that awards show)?

Hosting AVN is just another gig.

Does McNeil keep his job if you substitute Marie Taylor for the daughter of Entercom's CEO? I doubt it.

I don't know. It doesn't matter. AVN host does not mean porn star, just like editor of porn movies does not mean porn star.

Then based on your own words in this thread, you believe Mac should have been fired from ESPN in May of 2005;

as LTG said, mac already didn't have a track record. but the national media didn't know that. as far as the national perspective was, this was just another old white guy who said something awful.

it was a bad joke, and the fact that he deleted it after a half hour of sitting on it, proves either someone nudged him or he realized it was a bad joke.

when you're fired for a deleted tweet, it's a sign of the times. the internet is the thought police. the problem is, as has been stated, mac should know better. you know when you put your thoughts online, it's going to get ravaged by the mob.

hitting "send" is the internet equivalent of firing a loaded weapon.

I’m doing some “research” here, and it does appear the hosts of the AVN awards are usually porn stars.

I don’t think that was Mac’s intention, but maybe it was?

I’m going with he made a mistake when he was under the influence.

Happens to the best of us.

Actually it doesn't unless they make you perform as part of your duties. It might happen that the host is an actor as well. It might be the host is a comedian, like Aries Spears

One thing is for sure:

No one in this thread can say they know Mac’s intent 100% without the man himself letting us know.

his comment was that she was dressed trashy and provocative. at the most innocent, he's just not "with it" as far as fashion goes. what she wore didn't strike me as anything out of the ordinary. i think she looked great.

i've seen more revealing outfits on FOX News "anchors".

Nah. You erred. Its ok to admit it. They are hosted by porn stars. Mac knows this being an admitted patron of the trade. They aren't simply porn stars when they are performing porn duties.

Nope. Take a look at your own post. Hosted by adult film super star Nikki Benz and cam-girl Emily Bloom along with comedian Aries Spears. That's three hosts.

But take it in the light absolutely most favorable to your position. A host is not being actor that day. A host is being a host. So, unless the duties of host require a performance, host does not mean actor.

Is Jimmy Kimmel doing an episode of his night show when he hosts an awards show. No.
