They ran the ball well, and the defense looked like they were still figuring things out. There are some reasons to be optimistic. It is hilarious to write off Mack and Quinn before they play a single game together.

Who's written them off? You jump to a lot of conclusions.

I simply don't think Quinn will be healthy yet, even if he plays.

Mack has only been slightly above average for the last 17 games. Opponents aren't even bothering to double team or game plan around him anymore. Let's hope he can elevate his play soon.

The Bears did indeed run the ball pretty well...against the Lions.

This. Can't believe how people are suddenly dismissing Mack. He's still a T5 defensive player in the league. A so-so 2019 and a listless wk 1 doesn't just change that. But, fans will be fans.

So he was mediocre last year but he's still a top-5 defensive player? OK.

He's played 6 seasons. He's won DPoY. He's been a 1st Team All-Pro thrice. He's made the Pro Bowl 5 times. Yes, he's still a T5 defensive player in the NFL.

He may have the potential to be an elite defensive player, but he clearly wasn't one last season. He didn't get off to a great start last Sunday either.

Agreed.

Bears win a boring 19-17 taffy pull.

That's a facile comparison and you know it. But I'll play ball. Name me 5 better defensive players in the league. Guys you would take today over Mack.

Aaron Donald
TJ Watt
Jamal Adams
Stephon Gilmore
Tre'Davious White

That wasn't even hard. There's many more.

To put him over Khalil Mack is laughable. Was he good last year? Yes, pretty damn good. He's nowhere near the player Mack is, though; certainly not in terms of the body of work he's put together. PFF didn't even have [him] in its T101 the prior year. He also benefits from being a DB up in Buffalo. Lots of so-so guys made pro bowls and got paid while up there. Hell, look at Jairus Byrd. Sean McDermott has a pretty good history of coaching up a secondary, too (see e.g., Carolina).

As with some of the other players you reference, we probably have a fundamental disagreement as to the effect a safety can have on a game vs an edge rusher.

If you want just edge rushers

TJ Watt
Za'Darious Smith
Both Bosa bros
Myles Garrett

All better than Mack currently. There's more too

There are a lot of good edge rushers in the league right now, and particularly in 2019. I sincerely hope that Z. Smith isn't one of them again in 2020. Fwiw, Mack's pressure numbers, even in a down 2019, are still fairly comparable to each of the guys you mentioned, except for Watt (Mack: 45; J. Bosa: 54; Watt: 59; N. Bosa: 45; Garrett (10 G): 29; Smith: 50).

Bobby Wagner is also better on defense.

Bobby Wagner is very good. Forgot to mention that Mack still managed to rack up 5 FF's last year.

i dont think im going out to watch this game. i want to but with the packers on at the same time its pretty fucking annoying. even if i can get the bartender to switch one tv on, it still sucks because everyone is nutting over how amazing the packers are. late in the season its usually better because the fans start getting pessimistic

Mack seems to have lost his inside power move, likely due to injuries, but you do not see him power the LT into the QBs lap like he did when healthy early in his stint with the Bears. This game should reveal if the incredibly highly paid Bears D is for real, if they come out and shut down Barkley early and make Giants throw to beat them it should be one of the Mitch era 14-10 type wins where the offense does just enough to hold on and win. Without Goldman the Bears petite ILB's are very susceptible to inside runs, some disturbing signs of an aging D in the Detroit game. This team must get something out of the offense or the aging guys that make up the core of this D like Trevathan, Hicks, Mack, and Quinn will not last long.

This is the perfect game to blitz early and often. Our corners should be pressing and we should be blitzing.. Barkley is either gonna get a handoff or miss the block when the blitz comes.. The only real downside is if Barkley catches a screen on the blitz..so just be wary.. We should curb stomp these chumps.

Bears 26
NY 17

Is it true the Giants play a lot of zone? If true, this game will come down to the Bears D and Daniel Jones in the turnover battle. Bears offense won't score over 20 points

I wonder if Mitch will ever target Kmet. He's not looking anywhere near him.
