If the NL Central is the worst division in baseball, how is it possible that they only have 1 team under 500 and might have 3 teams make the playoffs?

Actually, as of this morning I believe it is 4 teams, as the Phillies have fallen out of the 8th spot. If the Brewers win 3 of 5 from the Cardinals, they could end up with the 7 spot and the Reds get the 8 spot, and St. Louis would have to go play the Monday DH against a Tigers team waiting to get to the airport.

Has anybody heard how crews will be assigned in the playoffs? Any chance the Sox get stuck with this clown car Hernandez crew?

Fucking guy couldn't even get out the first inning of his first spring game behind the plate without blowing a call

The more I see of this guy, its not his fault. He's just a bad umpire. There are bad pitchers, hitters, and fielders across the game as well. The difference is that when you are a bad player, you're generally sent down or shipped out. The fact that MLB keeps Angel employed as an umpire makes them at fault more than anything.

Hernandez is an awful ump, but I think he got that one right. Pitch was low and it was only the catcher's frame job that made it look like a strike.

That was a satisfying takedown of angel Hernandez. But the real sad thing is this dude pulls off shit like this in pretty much every game.
As for this game in the video.... how the fuck did he miss those calls? Does he not see them for whatever reason and just guesses hoping he'll be right?

With the flyball, thats exactly what he did.

As you saw, I got basically blinded by the outfield scoreboard. The pixels on the lights were as clear as white can be. I was trying to make out what happened out there. The harder I looked, the less I could see. So I was trying to read the players to see what they did with the ball. And I had to come out with the call. I basically guessed on the wrong call. So as soon as I turned around, (home plate umpire) Edwin (Moscoso) started walking towards me. We got the crew together. And we fixed the problem."

Wow. That comment right there should absolutely get him sent to the minors. If the lights are too bright you need to find yourself in dimmer accommodations.

I'm a lowly IHSA umpire, but a simple rule they tell you in any sport is don't call what you don't see. I don't have TV cameras and (usually) 30k fans there watching my calls, but if that's a play you don't see for some reason, you'd just make yourself small and go by how all the players are reacting and hope nobody questions it. Maybe because you're Angel Hernandez and you suck someone will tweet a video showing you didn't make the call when you were supposed to, but that's better than a whole video showing how you blew an easy call.

In this video, there are two other umpires looking at the play, seemingly with better views than Angel, and neither of them make an out call.

Pretty sure in a 4 man crew with runners on 1st and 2nd any outfield fly to the right of 2nd base is U1’s call. Other umps should be listening/watching for tag ups/obstruction.

That is my thought as well, but he is just a terrible umpire.

Yeah, if he was U2 he would have found a way to call the runner at 2nd out for leaving early even though there was no catch.

Was just coming here to post the same thing. Fucking brutal. Yeah, lets worry about a pitcher with pine tar on his hat, but keep this jackass behind the plate calling balls and strikes.
