Ranking held up/slightly improved after most other teams caught up in games played over the weekend. Bears are also second overall in opponent's QB rating, after the Colts. Also, they are first overall in # of TDs surrendered. It's tough so far to get 6 on these guys.

The stats are what they are so I won't bother disputing other than to point out context - ie the quality of offenses they've played. Surely you'd agree that playing a team with a bad O will generally result in better defensive stats. To date the Bears have played following offenses (ranked by EPA/play): 23rd, 31st, 20th, 22nd, 21st. I agree that the Bears defense is good but some regression also seems likely.

Didn't see this till now. I'm not sure I'm ready to call the offenses bad outside of the Giants. And I'm also not sure if those metrics reflect output before or after the Bears played those respective teams. While regression may be in order the stats also may stay level or marginally improve if the offense stays on the field longer by converting third downs, which they don't do well at all. That extra wind for the D will be a boon for the numbers.

I'm not sure why you feel the 3rd down effectiveness will improve beyond that you hope it will but almost assuredly the offenses they play will. The Bears get another patsy in Carolina (22) but after that they face teams currently ranked 5,7,8,14,1,17,23,14,13,1. If the coaching change in Houston works out then even that game could become a concern.

Not really. It's fair to wonder if those rankings are pre or post Bears games. It will have an impact on the analysis.

Btw, Bridgewater with 80 yards passing midway through the third. That's like...200 below his average. Six points no TDs yet despite horrid play from the Bears offense.

bears defense is probably top 5 in NFL. They r a 5-1 team with no offense. Doesn't take much analysis beyond that.

Panthers were averaging 23.6 coming into the game. Bears hold them a full touchdown plus EP below their average, their lowest scoring game of the year. Without that 33 yard pass interference call that led to a one yard TD run, the score could have been even lower.

While they are not a good 5-1 team, it will take an epic collapse not to make the playoffs. 9-7 with all their NFC wins is a lock. 3 teams with 6 legit contenders (Bears, AZ, SF, LA, TB, Car) and wins over two of them.

They just don't have it on offense. But the defense is solid, barring major injuries.

They're setup as the team everyone will bet against opening playoff weekend. Defense will keep them in the game but offense will be useless.

I can see them losing 9-3. Nme will still criticize the defense.

defense is now starting to create turnovers as well. They were on the cusp of about three pick sixes (Jackson with the bs pi call, Hicks fumble recovery would have been a return if he left it for Gipson, Gipson's INT where he went ob). This is a great trend.

The defensive line is really beginning to dominate, even when they rush three.

Hicks is the heart and soul of that defense.

You can say that Mack is playing really well too without me holding it against you.

They didn't give up those #1 draft picks and sign him long-term to already be at most the 2nd best defensive player on the team.

2018.

They both are benefiting from playing together. Nothing wrong with that.

Ironically the Raiders could really use someone like...Mack. Atrocious defense through the first quarter of the season undermines whatever progress they're showing on offense. Teams are dropping an average of 30 on that undisciplined bunch.

Also, if the regular season ends up getting cut short due to covid outbreaks, the Bears should be sitting pretty.

 Slow your roll. You eked out a win against a team missing its best offensive player.

The Raiders were kind enough to draft lower round talent with those picks so the real value loss was minimal

Well, the Raiders were non-factors for the length of the trade until a week ago too.

Watching Josh Jacobs close out a RAIDER victory in London while Khalil Mack was sucking air on the sidelines was the best, until beating Mahomes was the best. Too bad the Bears didn't capitalize in 2018. The Raiders did Mack a favor by trading him to a contender while they began the rebuild. You better max out your Mack enjoyment this year. I know your bar is set pretty low, maybe a victory in the playoffs? The clock is ticking.

Not that the Bears have a lot of January success, but the Raiders haven't won a playoff game since George W Bush was in the White House.

 Did you watch the Chiefs game?

In addition to Derek Carr outplaying Patrick Mahomes, many Bear fans here commended the defensive effort.

Shall I quote them for you?

Man even your defense of the Raiders' defense is leaky.
