If Pat Hughes was not as solid as he is, I don't think they would keep Santo on the air. Besides, no one else would want to work with the guy. His responses are either direct repeat of what Pat just said or an answer that is "he may steal here, then again he may not". And he is like Colonel Angus, he has a pointless response to every single thing that Pat says.

I mostly listen to Ron and Pat to hear Santo's wheezing ambience as he utters groans of disgust from his jiggling maw. When Santo talks it's not really enlightening or even really entertaining, it's hearing him suffer in the background noise that keeps me listening.

Yeah, Santo is bad. I heard a little of the game Sunday on the radio and Cory Provus mentioned that Orlando Hudson was out for the year with a broken wrist.

Ron asked: "Was he hurt pitching?"

There was a few seconds of silence, I think Provus was thinking Whaaaat? Then Santo started badgering Provus for an answer. It was kind of funny.

I understand Santo loves the Cubs, but I expect a little more from a radio broadcast. Does Ron do any pre game research? I guess I know the answer to that question.

Maybe if the Cubs win a World Series this year, the Cubs can say "Ron you saw a WS win, now leave (gracefully of course).

But with Santo also looking for an HOF induction, I think we will see him in the booth until that is accomplished. There is something about that, using the Cubs radio booth for personal gain, that strikes me the wrong way.

The sad thing is that Santo has dropped Hughes' intelligence level. Pat has become so accustomed to working with a 9 year old that even when Otto sits in, Pat stills makes comments that he knows would make Santo giggle. Otto just kind of politely snickers, but I wish Pat could get over that.

I'd contend that Pat is more than solid; he's one of the very best in the game. He just sounds like baseball should sound on the radio. Bob Uecker and Jim Powell are both very good as well. I like what Marty Brennaman I get to hear at night when WLW comes in. Cardinals are off KMOX, so I can't assess John Rooney, but Mike Shannon was horrible. Redneck Santo.

It's funny. If you scour the vast Internet for baseball fans discussing other teams' broadcasters, every conversation hits the exact same three points, in the exact same order:
1) "Oh man, these guys are such annoying homers for their team."
2) "Our guys get excited sometimes, but they're usually pretty good about calling it down the middle."
3) "Neither of them are as bad as those White Sox guys, though. You ever heard THEM?"

I'm ready to spend at least an hour testing this.

Ron Santo brings absolutely NOTHING to the Cubs' Radio Network broadcasts, and I find it a bit amusing that his partner on WGN 720, Pat Hughes, refers to him as "Cubs' Legend". Pat continues to carry Ron's sorry ass on the broadcasts, and while he's not on this trip in favor of Dave Otto this week in Atlanta & Miami this weekend, when will bosses at "Radio 720" wake up & smell the coffee and realize how inept Santo really is?

There seems to be a lot of Santo haters, from B&B, the Hall Of Fame, and this board.
Has Santo ever been a dick to you? I just find it hard to hate on a 70 year old
man who happens to be kinda bad at his job. Go to any Wal-Mart and you'll see the
same sort of cheerleaders, but Santo was a good player, or so I've been told.

Love Pat, Ron doesn't bug me as much as he does others, but here in Ke-nowhere,
without Comcast, all I get are the WGN games, or Fox, or ESPN, or when they're playing the
Brewers on the Brewers channel. I'll take Len and Bob any day, but #10, c'mon...

I love Santo for the pathos he bleeds in his broadcasts. When the Cubs foul up, it's "Jeez, but you really don't want to walk the leadoff hitter". Later in the game, that's reduced to "Aw, jeez!" I KNOW what he means and anyone who follows baseball knows what he means. He is simply giving voice to the four letter words we say in private that cannot be broadacast over the air.

Sometimes I get a little annoyed with Santo, but I can just enjoy the broadcasts for what they are. Dave Otto can provide decent analysis, but I've never come away from a Cubs radio broadcast thinking "boy, I'm glad Dave Otto was sitting in." I neither laugh nor learn. WGN knows what it has, and markets accordingly: it's not like they're selling us hard-hitting "professorial analysis" of Cubs baseball and failing to deliver. It's a crazy old man and a baseball announcer playing the straight man. People know what they're getting, they listen, they enjoy it, and WGN presumably bills Old Style, Walgreens, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield quite a bit for the privilege of advertising.

Making fun of double amputees is always funny , Ron is a horrible announcer, no doubt, but losing his legs due to complications of being diabetic and taking every chance to make fun of it, its cheap, childish and stupid. I am a little pissy about this then more because I have family that are amputee's and there is enough things to make fun of them about way before I need to make fun of a missing limb. I guess it just me.

I find it amazing Frank that yout get pissed off when people call you fat or whatever, thats something you can control, you can go on a diet, then it stops, but yet, you make fun of a guy who has a disease and no choice in losing his legs, its forever and I dont find making fun of it funny. Maybe others do, maybe I am just uptight and if thats case, sorry, I just thinks its a bullshit thing to do when you could have picked out so many other things to nail him on.

I'll lose a lot of weight on the Ron Santo diet. You can lose 40 pounds with just 2 surgeries!
