One song only
Name your favorite song of all time. You can even get to a specific recording.
For me it is easy

Bob Mould-See a little Light. I was in a bad place. Yeah I know you all think I am always there , but I was really in a dark place.I was Falling hard. and I knew of Mould from Husker Du. A friend gave me workbook and the first time I heard it in the context of the album I was caught. The song is the only bright spot in a ocen of dispare and dark. It helped me turn my life around until I fell again. Even today when I listen to it I cry with the knowlege of the fuck up I did and the gift I was given. Yet, I have stepped away from the shit I did and have rebuilt myself and am feeling okay. When ever I feel low I pop it on and get a recharge. Only other song that comes close is Dan Hartmans I can Dream About you

Tangled up in blue.

I used to alternate favorite songs depending on season/mood/etc but for the past 10 years or so my answer hasn’t changed.

probably the most romantic love song, besides tom waits' "take it with me".

for me it'll always be "birdhouse in your soul". for favorite song, not...romantic love song.

"Letter to Memphis" is pretty romantic without being pussified.

Almost makes me wish I had an Egyptian girlfriend.

You like that better than the original?

EDIT: I see you linked the original too. Not my favorite Mott tune. I like some of the more macho numbers like "One of the Boys" or "Sucker".

The Alejandro version? Oh yeah. Best rendition. They're all good, even the John Hughes soundtrack sounding take

Pulled those up on youtube and thought I was listening to Ziggy Stardust era Bowie. Bowie and Hunter had the same guitar player? I think that's what it is. Good tunes, Sucker and Boys and what sounds like a lost track from Ziggy Stardust 'All the Way from Memphis'. At least til the horns come in on the last one.

Found a Brian May version of Memphis that's more to my taste. Hunter might be one of those songwriters where I like other people's versions of his songs better than his original (or at least more updated sounding takes), e.g., Foster the People 'Pumped Up Kicks'

Mott the Hoople was my favorite band for a long stretch when I was in high school. Ian Hunter is an interesting guy. He's not a Baby Boomer like most of the classic rock guys. He's older, Beat or Lost Generation. He started out as one of the many "New Dylans". Here's a very Dylanesque cover of a great Sonny Bono song from the first Mott record:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gn8iNnPfQY

They made a great album in Brain Capers but it didn't sell. They were ready to quit but then Bowie got hold of them, glammed them up, and gave them "Dudes". The rest is history.

Really tough to choose one.
Musically speaking without lyrical content...probably Baby O'Riley.

Lyrically speaking...."Hooray for Me..." by Bad Religion
