In baseball, scouts listen for the crack of the ball off the bat. Its sexy and gets you drafted higher. Is there a similar concept for QBs that can throw a tight spiral? Reason I ask is that it seemed several times last night when Mitch's longer throws were in slow motion replay, they resembled a wobbling duck. Not something I pay much attention to, but it was just egregious enough for me to notice. Is that more common in the league and I'm just not aware of it? Or is Mitch really that bad at throwing a football?

I think it definitely does. Mahomes throws perfect spirals. Cutler often thew wobbles.

The tighter the spiral, the more accurate the pass. A spiral also travels a greater distance and less susceptible to resistance from weather. It's all physics. Use the rifle as an example. When gun barrels were smooth they were far less effective. When they became true rifles with grooved barrels the bullet leaves the barrel in a spiral resulting in much greater accuracy.

It's also easier to catch.

its obvious but theres tons of examples of good qb's that dont have pretty spirals. but to say it doesnt matter would be wrong.

Not a scientist but I think a spiral is probably the most aerodynamic way to throw a football. If you throw some that are nice spirals and others are fluttering ducks i think it would be tough to have any kind of touch. With out a consistent feel I imagine the accuracy would be shit. I don’t think they need to throw spirals but I think need to be able to throw pretty much the same every time.

Obviously a wounded duck is not good, but I think in the Sports Science video that showed how awesome Drew Brees' accuracy was, they said a very slight wobble (rather than a perfect spiral) is ideal.

Check it out here, starting around 6:15: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVoqA-LKGb4

It's funny you mention this. I throw the football around with my nephews whenever I see them. We use the half size football.

I CAN'T THROW A SPIRAL.

I've never been able to throw a spiral.

My 8 year old can do it on a regular basis. I'm embarrassed.

By the way, this nephew of mine, not that anybody cares, is a pretty damn good athlete. Top player on his soccer and baseball teams.

It keeps it on a more direct path. There is physics to it. I was never good at it and have gotten worse over time. Always better with nerf than a regular ball.

That’s pretty neat. As I suspected his accuracy was mostly due to each throw being exactly the same. Same angle same spin. That being said if That was shot in a windy Green Bay I am sure he would have been bouncing it of the turf like Mitch was.

FFS, I thought your netflix post would be the dumbest words you typed this week.

Fun little story. I'm sure some of you guys know it.

Jim McMahon couldn't throw a good spiral either. Then in the 1986 playoffs, before the Super Bowl, he wore gloves for the 2 playoff games - Giants and Rams. Cuz it was so damn cold at soldier field. He had never wore gloves before this. He said the gloves helped him throw a better ball. A better spiral.

So he wore them at the Super Dome for Super Bowl XX.

imagine getting that far into your career and just finding out how to get better. these fuckin people are born with talent, a lot of them barely even hone their craft they just do what they naturally do and its way better than anyone else could ever do no matter how much they try.

Well that is a serious mistype, if you are a parent it most definitely should be reported immediately.
