You're wrong. He has a 92 two seamer that sinks, a 92 four seamer, plus 3 other pitches he has command of. Those guys do not grow on trees.

92? That barely gets you to the big leagues these days. Yeah, he has good command. That's his game.

Isn’t that the first priority for a pitcher, command your pitches?

Like I said, I'm not enamored with "stuff". But command is only gonna take a guy so far. I like the odds that Dunning isn't going to be a Maddux or a Buehrle. I'd be way more afraid of trading Cease or Kopech and having them turn into a Giolito or an Al Leiter or something than I am of Dunning being Brad Radke.

It's the 92 sinker that's the money shot. He'll eventually tick up a touch on the 4 seamer, which Lynn also did from when he first came up. His seasons range from 91.4 to 94 on HIS bread and butter pitch.

My favorite quote on stuff vs command was from Orel Hershiser. He said “ You’ll hear pitchers say I had great stuff and got shelled, but you never hear a pitcher say I had great command and got shelled.”

Yeah, but the guys that consistently have great command are few and far between. And it helps to have "stuff" on the days when the command isn't there.

Back when they were both in their prime a popular Cubs/Sox argument was whether Wood or Buehrle was the better pitcher. Of course, the modern fans who think Ks are everything thought it was a silly argument. It was certainly silly. Just not in the way they thought. But Buehrle had exceptional command and on the rare occasions when he didn't, he didn't last long. Wood's big stuff could cover for a lot of sins.

Bottom line: I think Dunning is safer than Cease or Kopech, but the chance that he might be truly great is less than for the other two.

Jenkins was like that. Fergie was always good for 3 starts a year in his prime when he'd have something atrocious like 7 runs in 3 2/3. He even wrote about it tangentially in his book on pitching, where he talked about being able to quietly signal the bench that he didn't have it and to hurry up and get someone warmed up.

Jenkins also wrote about not ever being worried about giving up solo HR, especially at Wrigley. He was much more worried about long innings with multiple guys on base. Cause when you are pitching 300+ innings in a season, efficiency matters.

I think there are multiple reasons why starting pitchers don't carry the same workload they once did, but the premium that has been put on strikeouts on the defensive side and walks on the offensive side (along with an indifference to strikeouts) has lengthened counts and at-bats. It's also created an extremely boring game.

What speed do you think Cy Young threw? I'm thinking his best fastball in his prime was high 70's.

How fast was Walter Johnson's fastball?
In 1917, Johnson's fastball was tested in a Bridgeport, Conn., munitions laboratory at 122 feet per second, which converts to 83.2 mph.

Totally different baseball, mound quality, shoes, warm up techniques, etc. It's like comparing your great grandmother to a random TikTok skank.

Not to mention that there have been programs that suggested that he was around 100.

Probably only about 40 mph. I also think he could only run 100 yards in about 50 seconds. He was slow, tiny, and white. People were a different species 100 years ago. Evolution, brother!

Weems had pretty good numbers in A ball or Rookie ball or whatever. Wonder where he will end up?

Line up 500 guys and maybe one of them can throw 80. My above post was more of a statement of why the old timers could stay healthy, not that they sucked.

maybe in a few years. Certainly not next year and we needed him to be Lance Lynn next year.

I don't think there's a single guy pitching now that throws harder than Feller or Ryan did. There's no way to really know though.

Dalkowski?

Nuke LaLoosh, right?

Yeah, Feller and Ryan lasted a long time, too. Ryan was pretty damn effective in his 40s.

Who are the plethora of young pitchers with higher upside then Dunning? Serious World Series franchises aim for Bauer and Springer. You got Lynn and Eaton

Who'd you get?

Hey now, in a year they'll finally admit losing Babe Schwarber was addition by subtraction.

Rangers pitcher Dane Dunning is turning out to be just as good as advertised following a dominant outing against the Orioles on Saturday night in Globe Life Field. His outing brought his ERA on the season to 0.60 and WHIP to 0.80. He’s got 16 strikeouts to just two walks across three starts.

https://www.mlb.com/news/dane-dunning-d ... vs-orioles

But it was time to spike the ball after one good game by Lynn, who is now on the DL.

Well a ball spiking becomes less effective once he hits the DL.

Think something through for once. You traded away someone who was the most major league ready. Why? For cost control. The number one reason this franchise does anything. Instead of spending money like was promised they went for a guy with an affordable contract.
