I think he was shamed into giving $100. The round was free btw.

What an asshole! He'd have B-jocks all year long with me.

It's not clear who you're addressing here, but I drew a clear line for you.

If you don't have money to tip then don't go out to eat/carry out from a restaurant. Grab McDonald's where tips aren't expected like you mentioned. That's not name calling either, just a simple observation.

I am directly referencing you among others. Why is not tipping at McDonald’s ok but you’re cheap if you don’t tip at a carryout location where I pay for my food and someone behind the counter, not waitstaff, hands me my food? What is the fundamental difference?

Generally speaking more prep goes into restaurant carry out orders and many places will take bartenders or servers away from their other responsibilities to prep the order. McDonalds and other fast food places don't have that same dynamic.

You already seem to understand this or else you wouldn't be doing the mental gymnastics of trying to justify why you're not tipping at places you even acknowledge it's expected. Olive Garden has shitty food and I haven't been there in over a decade but I shouldn't have to explain the difference between it and McDonalds to you. You already know.

And again, considering how hard that industry has been hit this year, you go from cheapskate to just an asshole if you're stiffing those in the industry on tips in a year like this.

No one is talking about stiffing the wait staff or bartenders. Actually, it was mentioned that if they prepare your food you should tip them since you are taking them away from their other customers. We are talking about an established carryout location like pizza or Chinese food. Those places do not use wait staff or bartenders to prepare takeout orders. I suspect you never worked at a restaurant.

The Chinese places it depends on the setup. But usually I tip $2-3 for carry-out. I used to frequent Lao Size Chuan in DG before Tony Hu went to jail and the food quality suffered. There was usually a 20-something immigrant Chinese woman working the cash register and the phones, and they'd always be genuinely surprised if I rounded say a $32.27 credit card slip to an even $35. I figured if $3 helped her get away from having to give blowjobs to whoever was holding her passport, then so be it.

This thread is surprisingly long.

Yes, tip them. If you can, overtip given current conditions.

That is a relatively new phenomenon. I travel extensively for work. Many years ago - when it was just becoming a thing - I would always leave a dollar for the maid and then expense it (our expense report specifically stated to include tips on the hotel entry). After a few months the guy who reviewed the expense reports asked our secretary why my hotel expense was always off by $1. When I explained I was told that wasn’t a legit entry. Still left the tip, just ate the cost. When you stay more than one night it’s definitely a good idea...a bit of goodwill never hurts.

I read once that the "standard" is $2-3 a night.

Had a friend who cleaned hotels out here. It was definitely a minority of guests that tip according to her. I tend to tip a little when I stay regardless of time spent or services rendered (short stays I often just put the do not disturb sign up).

I have to admit I was late on tipping the take out people who hand me my food. I thought that was weird at first because in most cases those people make more hourly than the servers or delivery drivers.

A good rule of thumb is to just err on the side of overtipping. Any money you "save" will be spent on nonsense anyway but makes a real difference to people who depend on tips.

If a place has a set pickup counter or window, then I do not tip. If a place is pickup and delivery only, with maybe just a couple of stools but no tables or indoor service, I do not tip.

If such a pickup line/window/counter did not exist at the establishment prior to covid and does now, I leave a buck or two.

i dont tip on pickup. i used to live on tips, but taking someones food, in your personal car, with your personal gas, risking your property to get them a meal felt reasonable to expect a tip.

likewise, seating people at a table, taking their order, bringing them food and checking on them a few times to make sure they have what they want, and then also cleaning up after them.. that seems fair to leave a tip.

but just picking up? no. they didnt do anything extra. if they expect tips for that, then charge more to begin with.

in any case, i really wish we had a european model where tipping wasn't even a thing... but i hear even they are starting to do it more these days. i think its sad it's necessary.

yea a lot of them expect to get paid just for being present. they dont realize their job could easily be automated... its always made me wonder if machine bartender would actually work... so many people frequent bars where the bartender is horrible, yet they still go there.

Vegas has robot bartenders in a few tourist trap areas as a novelty. It was amusing and I guess not much worse than the bars where the pour is controlled by those flow sensors. Give me a Wisconsin bartender with a heavy hand anytime.

Just left 10% at a local restaurant. I was genuinely surprised by the number of people eating in a large tent outside. And it thankfully sounded like they were enjoying it.

I tip quite good at traditional shit. Dine-in and shit.

I dont tip on carryout just because Zippy wants to turn it into a new phenomenon.

My local Armand’s must not be used to getting pickup tips because when I picked up an order for my in-laws yesterday and gave a cash tip that was just over 20%, they gave me a bottle of wine as a GIFT.

I usually tip except at fast food type places. Like I will not tip at a Subway or JimmyJohns.

tipping is like gun laws. its a slippery slope. tipping worked ok when the dollar wasnt so diluted. now you have to constantly leave $10 tips everywhere and its still not enough for these service people to live off of. tipping should be abolished. period. its stupid.

Neither will I. Mostly because I will not eat at a Subway or Jimmy John's.

Tell them to reopen their place on Grand in Elmwood Park!!!! We went there all the time when I was little. The 70s stone front, cocktails sign, green carpet, and the light up numbers are both great and vivid in my mind. I think they had a juke box too. We'd have dinner there and ordered a pizza to go usually. I want to say they had lamb's head or brain on the menu too. I was terrified somebody would come out with a head but that's what you picture when you are 5. I loved that place, I wish I could go there with my parents again or take my kids there.
