Everytime I tune in to the Sox, this guy, Alexei Ramirez, is making one sweet play after another in the field, and he is also knocking the ball out of park some too. I know Carlos Quinten is putting up big offensive numbers...but I think this guy might be the best player on the team.

Just another reason why Kenny Williams is the best GM in the city.

Kenny made a great move, in signing Ramirez, to what has to be considered a bargain basement contract. He made another great move in trading for Carlos Quentin. But then you have to look at trading Garland and just getting Orlando Cabrerra, who they will let go, at the end of the season. They should have gotten a player who would have been around to contribute for several seasons, for a middle of the rotation guy, who twice won 18 games. Trading to get Griffey, was also a foolish move. He's taking at bats away from players who are better able to help the team and his defense is now below average, in centerfield. Then there is the matter of Kenny signing Konerko to his current deal. He definitely over-paid Paulie and now he couldn't get rid of him if he tried. Kenny is a good GM who does a nice job with a limitied payroll, but he's made plenty of mistakes too. With the Cubs 29 games over .500 and Hendry having picked guys like Edmunds and Reed Johnson, up off the scrap heap and trading for Rich Harden, I would have to go with Jim Hendry.

And who's better?

Certainly not Angelo, Paxon, or Hendry. If anything, Dale Tallon may surpass Kenny in the next few years, but as it stands right now, and has since 2004, Kenny is the best bar none.

Hey Elmhurst Steve,
Make sure you thank Frank for that fastball down the middle of the plate.
You hit it out of the park.
Nicely played.
Walkrman5 makes a good comment about a fine Sox player and FC
doesn't know enough to just shut up and enjoy it - he has to turn it into
an anti-Cub thing.
Pathetic, as usual.

ES, that's good, but let us not forget that the GM is responsible for more than the MLB team.
Frank here is forgetting that the Sox have mortgaged their farm team out for some players this year. Not much in the pipe for the Sox. The Cubs, however, are developing quite a few farmhands.

The Garland for Cabrera trade was fine.

In case you haven't noticed, Elmhurst Steve: Buehrle, Danks, Floyd are having better years than Garland. Vazquez is about the same as Garland. I think Garland is 11-8 but his ERA is close to 4.00.

Cabrera has helped us more than Garland would have. Even Jose had a good first 2 months. Floyd took Garland's spot. Floyd is better than Garland this year.

Kenny is a top five GM in MLB. Billy Bean is up there. I can't think of his name but the Twins guy has been there all decade. He does it with no pay roll.

No, Riles. Saying 'Williams is the best GM in town' is not anti Cub. No more than it is Anti Bear or Bull. If you're gonna call me out, call me out for saying something anti Cub, not just stating a fact.

How many names is this for you? Pathetic, per usual.

The Sox don't seem to have a shortage of pitching down on the farm. Clayton Richard, Broadway and Carasco have all come up and did well for the most part this year. Aaron Poreda may be up in September, and if Boone Logan pulls his head out of his ass, he's arm out of the pen is outstanding.

Kenny turned Brandon McCarthy into John Danks and Nick Masset, then turned Masset (and Richar) into Ken Griffey Jr. Richar was part of the Vazquez trade. He turned the injured Freddy Garcia (who was also a midseason trade, acquired for virtually nothing. Jeremy Reed has been a huge bust) into Gavin Floyd. Quentin was acquired for a nobody. Alexi Ramirez signed for peanuts. Carlos Lee brought in 2 key guys of a World Series title (something Hendry hasn't done yet-- again fact not anti Cub). He's locked up key guys long term, at or below market value. Say all you want about Konerko getting overpaid, I'd rather give him $60 mil over 5 years than Soriano $140 over 8. He turned Joe Borchard in Matt Thornton. Picked up Jenks off the scrap heap. Brought in AJ Pierzynski and Jermaine Dye, who have put up outstanding numbers over all and has kept them both longterm.

Oh, and he's got a ring. So yeah, given all that, I can see why he wouldn't be the best

apologeye for the mis-ID, but the fact remains that the "best GM" comment was not anti Cub. You won't have to wait long for me to post something considered anti Cub, but that wasn't it.

How can anyone seriously even mention another GM in the city as being better than Kenny Williams? He's EASILY the best one since Jerry Krause.

First, he's got a ring.
Second, he's pretty much rebuilt a team that everyone thought was destined to fail, and found a way to keep contributing players on that team at a good price. Take a look at Jermaine Dye. Another great job by Kenny to keep him and for a fair salary.

Take a look at Thome for Rowand. You can bash him for Cabrera for Garland, but doesn't he then get credit for still having Jim Thome while Rowand moved on to a different team?

Take a look at where Freddy Garcia is right now. Here's a hint. Jim Hendry could have him. Now what did the Sox get for Freddy Garcia? That's right. Gavin Floyd.

Carlos Quentin. I don't even have to address that one. Another amazing move.

Danks, Floyd, Quentin, Ramirez are the building blocks of the future. Not bad for a farm system that supposedly has been bare for years.

He has sold high and bought low so many times and the level of success under his tenure is only surpassed by Jerry Krauses in my lifetime.

Not all of his moves have been perfect but no GM is. The fact is that he put together a World Series champion and currently has a lead in the AL Central which was supposed to be difficult. He also has them in a position to compete for the wild card in a clearly superior AL.

Sorry Cubs fans, Kenny Williams is BY FAR the best GM in Chicago and it's not even close. If Hendry ever builds a World Series winner, it may be a discussion, but until then it's not.

Why does it have be either/or...

Why can't it be that both the Cubs and Sox have good GMs?

He may have done that, and he didn't have to sell his future away.
Who picked up Edmonds and Johnson off the scrap heap?
Who got rid of Hee Sop and picked up Lee?
Who pushed the closer to become a starter (no one thought that would work, but Hendry)
Who, despite several objections regarding his defense, still picked Ramirez?

Hendry's excellent GM'ing was ruined by a miserable manager in Dusty.
Most of Hendry's moves, especially in the last two years, have panned out well.

If Williams were so brilliant, what the fuck happened in 06 and 07?

He picked up Johnson and Edmonds out of necessity- Pie sucked.

I'm not saying he is a bad GM, but Williams > Hendry.

Darkside, you gave us 2 good moves he made- Aram and Lee, kudos, they were good moves. Rick and I rattled off about a dozengood moves Kenny has made.

And, after all, who picked Dusty?

Kenny put at least an ALCS team on the field in 2006, the players just failed plain and simple. Its not Kenny's fault the players, just about all of them, sucked during the 2nd half of 2006.

The 2004 Sox were decimated by injury, as were the 2007 Sox. If Mags OR Thomas stays healthy thry 2004, the Sox win the central.

2007 Sucked and everyone is to blame- including Kenny, But he is making up for it this year

Hendry picked up Reed and Edmonds out of necessity.
So why did Williams pick up Ramirez?
Deep-seated willingness to make a Cuban refugee into a millionaire?
Beardown said that the Garland for Cabrera trade was fine because of the unexpected
emergence of some of the other young pitchers.
Is that how Kenny makes trades?
It's all right to make a lopsidedly bad trade if some rookies
come up out of nowhere to cover your ass?
I think not.
I won't bash Williams or even try to compare him to Hendry.
Just remember that all of this started when some Cub fan decided
he'd like to give kudos to Ramirez.
As usual, a bunch of insecure Sox fans have turned the thread
into a train wreck.

Sell his future away? What are you smoking? What move did Kenny Williams make in 2005 to sell the future away? I'd like an example of what he did in 2005 that did that.

Speaking of selling the future, please take a look at the contract of Soriano.

The team got old, and players who were contributors failed to deliver. They had a bad year and a half. They followed up an awesome 1.5 years with 1.5 bad years, and then a good year this year. Remember, the Sox were still on a roll going into the all star game in 2006. Then it all went downhill.

Don't try and tell me that Hendry wouldn't take an 0-162 next year for a World Series this year. He'd love to "sell the future".

Again, congratulations on the good moves that Hendry has made. No one is taking anything away from that. He however can't compete with the resume of Kenny Williams, especially if he doesn't win a title this year, and the Sox make the playoffs. For all the great moves that Hendry has made, it will have resulted in the same type of season.

Try and be objective. Hendry is good, but he hopes one day to have accomplished what Kenny Williams already has.

As for Hendry not selling the future, please give me the young core top 5 guys that the Cubs are built for the future with. I can give you four with the Sox and the fifth player is debatable.

The skinny litte fucker just hit another 3-run homer. Man, the guy is pumping up his RBI total. He's got 10 or 11 in his last 4 games.

He should be ROY. Especially considering Longoria is missing 3 weeks right now.

I don't understand.
He is playing like an MVP.
They didn't give anyone up for him.
They have him for 5 more years.
Doesn't that mean that he IS the future?
