First we found out that the endless waves of talent was wrong. Then the sustained excellence was not so easily sustainable. Third now is the endless streams of revenue is BS. Theo bails from the Titanic.

So what is the next big non surprising shoe to drop in Cubs land?

Some sort of Ricketts family financial scandal wouldn't be too shocking

they have had sustained excellence, its just been fueled by the Rev. Watkins theory of baseball rather than anything the cubs did in the affirmative

My guess is we'll see Personal Seat Licenses at some point soon.

Lots a joy in The Subdivision I see today. Understandable considering The Sux just swapped Ricky Renteria for The Spanish Joe Biden. Top that off with a team that hasn't won a playoff game since Obama was a community organizer in Hyde Park.

I think that Bryant gets dealt before the start of the season to a team that is fine with him for one year and a QO for the second (or the draft pick when he rejects it). Especially if it's just going to cost a couple of AA players or a failed first or second round draft pick (think Mike Montgomery).

If they wait until during the season to trade him, the acquiring team can't extend a QO, so the Cubs return will be much less.

I do think the Cubs will sign a starter better than Lester now on a one year deal with a 2022 team option to allow them to move some salary obligation out. Something in the area of what Davies makes, $8-10M. Or maybe trade for a similar starter from a small market team, and give up one of the four lottery tickets they just got.

I said not so easily sustained. The Bernstein squad had them booked for multiple World Series.

The multiple WS narrative was always nonsense. Baseball doesn’t work like that.

Theo never endorsed those expectations as they weren’t truly realistic. People have come to down play the 3 straight NLCS but that and subsequent playoff appearances were t proverbial “bites at the apple.”

the appeal to the nlcs appearances is kind of a joke. They weren't competitive in 2 of the 3 going 1-8 in those games and being lucky to even get that one win. Sure, they were there. Hooray!

It's not really the appearance as much as winning a playoff series to get there. That is still a big deal for me personally.

How many playoff series have the Sox won in your lifetime? 3? Seems like a big deal

I think what I'm getting at is placing it within the context of the entire league. Sure the Cubs had winning records for several years but they were never much of a threat, like a slightly better Minnesota Twins.

He bought Wrigleyville, a hotel and a network. He's probably over $2 billion in hock.

I’d like to delay that word for about 70 years if that’s ok.

Hopefully a move to Fargo. Or Des Moines.

I get your point.

But it’s not a feat worth dismissing out of hand, as you suggest.

NLCS, WS win, NLCS: sign me up for that ride as often as possible. Hell, every 15 years would be fine by me.

Yet there are many baseball teams that don't even get that far. Some struggle to break .500 more than once or twice over the course of a decade. Two have never even made the playoffs in consecutive years.
