Couple nights ago a texter asked Les how Jason Heyward ranked in all time greatest Cubs? Les said he is around the top 20th. I don't think he cracks the top 100, maybe 150.

If Les said 20th, he's lost his mind.

Are you sure he didn't say "all time biggest busts in Cubs history"?

I think we all perceive Les as some middle aged and hold him to standards we would set for someone of that age.

The guy is pushing 70 years old and working the grave yard shift. Adjust expectations appropriately

His brain is fine. He gets hung up on not crossing the pc line, being an ass kisser, or offending the Cubs, that gets him in trouble. And, he's always been a googoots.

Les coming out of a commercial break killing time giving the weather. Temperature wise it's actually pretty comfortable outside right now. But still, a bit on the muggy side. Then its comfortably muggy?

Classic Les phone caller Friday morning.

Les- Now we're going to go to Tinley Park. We got Moe back with us?
Moe- (Thick Middle Eastern accent) There's nothing going on in this world. So that's why they talk about it. (What's it?) There is a lot going on, but not in sport a. But a. What again? The Bears didn't prove nothing. Kyle Orten. Not Kyle Orten. But a, our quarterback there didn't prove nothing. Hello?
Les- Alright Moe. Thanks for calling. Dump him!

Classic Les killing time with no callers.

They (Panthers) seem to play well at Bank of America Stadium (3-7 last 2 years). I remember when that place first opened up in 1997. And when it opened up it was called Alltel Stadium...The place in San Francisco. That's had 4 different names. 3x for phone companies. Oracle stadium no longer that where the Warriors play. Now it's where the Giants play.

Pete from Baltimore called Les last night for an update on his life, and his sports thoughts.

Few months ago I had an altercation in a supermarket. I was going to get the newspaper. And someone else was. The last paper. We had an altercation.

You know, Tampa? The whole deal with Brady. That's why they're getting all the championships (NHL, possible MLB). That's part of the Brady deal they worked out. All the leagues work together. In order to get Brady to go over there. They promised all these championships. I read about a dozen papers at the library. I study it.

Les asks who's going to win the super bowl? The guy I had the altercation with in the supermarket was wearing a Steelers hat.

The police don't like me because I know what's going on. Because I'm exposing them. That Tampa thing. Don't think they don't care about that.

Les just keeps rolling along. He started at the score during the George H. W. Bush adminstration.

The thing about Les, I thought he was an old guy when I was a kid listening to Dahl. Les was probably in his 30s back then.

This isn't even work for Les. If he wasn't talking sports on the air, he'd be holding court with a bunch of crusty guys at a greasy spoon every morning talking sports for a couple of hours. He's a genuine guy.

Great way of putting it.

He's not genuine on the air now. He's a fraidy-cat. Afraid of his own shadow. Just collecting checks. He's not equipped to function in a pc world on-air. He doesn't actually talk about current sports now unless it's safe. Afraid to give any hot topic opinions. It's like a bad internet radio show Stern pranks. There'll never be a trainwreck sports radio show in Chicago like this again.

Terrible thought. He is the most genuine guy on the air.

While Les is an eccentric person, he is completely genuine. Have talked to him before games and he was extremely nice and cordial. We talked.....sports. Les is a good guy. Weird guy yes, but good guy.

He is the opposite of a Bernsie, Goff, etc. Guy is himself, not trying to prove or impress anyone. Just a good man.

THIS....he's an oddball, but incredibly genuine and nice. I like Les. I'd be happy to buy him a cocktail and chat.

This morning Les talking about his days at Columbia College. Keeping in mind, he's broadcasting from home in the burbs.

-We had our graduation here in this very building I'm talking to you now. Well, the one that (mumbled) Prudential Plaza. That's where the Score studios are. That's where all CBS studios are, radio wise right now.

I thought all the Score hosts were back at the studio.

Les on the Sox signing of Australian born Liam Hendriks, after playing a clip of him talking.

-Not a bargain, but a baagin, paak the caa.Think he's looking forward to facing the Boston Red Sox? He has a New England accent. Does he not? Baagin, go paak the caa. Hey, if he gets some outs, and closes out some games that's all that matters.

always liked les - despite the know-it-all attitude. good for 3-4 calls a night where he steers the caller's comment towards a grobber recollection that is 3-4 degrees of separation away from the caller's original comment/question.

the fact that les has an opinion on a few chicago sports personalities/teams always makes him interesting. i don't know if lovie smith belittled/insulted him once, because the grobber can't stand him.

i do remember chuck swirsky's show on wcfl in the late 1970s. he's open his show with ELO's 'fire on high'. the swirsk would talk hockey and i loved it. i believe the hawks were on wcfl back then, so..swirsky gets 3 out of 5 stars. will grant mulvey remain a a consistent 25-30 goal scorer??? i think the swirsk has his answer by now.

i bring up swirsky because i believe swirsky had a sport radio call-in show before les or coppock. my earliest recollection of the grobber was him doing sports on wls-am during the whole day. lujack/fred winston and i believe les hosted a ditka show and tomczak show on wls during the bears' glory years.

Your name you use made me think of a Score caller NWside something or other that called Julie & still Les. This guy is such a skilled speaker. Quick witted, with snappy catch phrases painting a picture in your head as he speaks. He must be a lawyer, or something with skilled speaking. A real silver tongued orator. And the guy seemed to know a lot of sports people. One night Les, who doesn't know which side to butter his bread, calls out the NWside guy to cool it and speak English.

Swirsky rose to fame because of Steve/Gary and KevHead making fun of his voice and mannerisms in the 80s. That was some great stuff.

of course, dahl made fun of everyone. he did make a good falklands song - his own 'cover' of j. geils 'freezeframe'.

Les last night on Mitch's future. Les thinks they could franchise tag him for 20+ million after George, Ted, and Pace threw him under the bus as a huge underperforming mistake.

-(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is not signed. That doesn't mean they won't sign him or franchise tag him. But, what happens with Allen Robinson? They can't franchise tag both of them.

i can't believe his show can't get more sponsors. the same autism and prostate commercials..over and over again.

maybe when the virus nonsense ends; he'll get some sport bars, casinos and restaurants to advertise.

The Score's onslaught of commercial breaks can almost be totally avoided by listening to their podcasts. The radio app commercials are also pretty easy to outsmart for Les's show that isn't podcasted. But, when Les bungles up commercials he reads it's pure gold. With the Cubs looking like they'll be horrible the Score might not get the ratings boost from them they're used to.
