You can bring a lot of great QBs into terrible teams and never get lucky enough to get all the right ancillary pieces.

Watson was the third qb drafted though I keep on thinking he was ahead of Mahomes for some reason.

That speaks to Veach’s talent in assessing Mahomes.

That's not how it was viewed at the draft though. Watson went 12th. That means that not only did 11 teams pass on them but it becomes far easier to trade up to 9 if you are team that could use a quarterback as good as him if you knew he was truly that special of a talent.

Saying 11 teams passed on him misses some context re: need, QB status, etc. At the time, I don’t recall a single piece questioning his talent. It was all whether he was too slight to hold up physically in the NFL, particularly with his injury history.

Luck has nothing to do with it, you have to hire a competent GM who hires a competent coach..they scout and evaluate talent..then develope it.

if ownership doesnt support or meddles in football ops even a good GM wont be as successful as they could be if ownership just stayed out of it.

Because they both suck at least as much as (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. What's the point?

Both are better than Mitch

With Nagy and Pace feeling the pressure of losing their jobs I dont see them going with Brissette or Taylor next year. They have to take a big swing at QB. They will try to go big with Watson, but no way that happens. It will end up being somone like Darnold and Foles and then they will draft someone at QB.

In general, with the top ten picks you are talking about teams that aren't very good and don't have franchise quarterbacks. It's not like the Bengals were like "We don't need a franchise qb like Watson because we have Andy Dalton".

to get darnold your giving up at least a 2nd if not more right? so then you're going to use your first on a qb too? a qb drafted 3rd or later is likely a project at best

If they get someone like Darnold I would not expect them to draft a QB in the first but prob mid rounds because they know they do not have time to wait on someone else to develop.

Now if they are not able to get someone like Darnold then they may use the first round on a QB depending on who is available.

I just think the urgency of the win now mode is going to dictate everything they do in this offseason.

Not necessarily. Dalton was coming off a pro bowl and most NFL teams don’t opt for luxury picks at the expense of filling a need.

You really want Pace drafting another rookie?

I’d rather they just sign a guy like Brissett, lose 10 games and then have a clean slate heading into the 2022 draft.

I do because it's at least 51% luck in getting the right guy unless you have the #1 pick and it works out that you get the type of quarterback that everyone knows deserves to go there.

Mahomes was the third pick in the draft, and 9 teams passed on him along with every other team including the Chiefs not thinking he was good enough to trade up to get before pick 10.

^I am now on Bricks side with this. Mostly, now, because I think this incoming class is a really good one. I also think with more cross over coaching/scheming, and rule changes between the NFL and college game it’s getting easier for incoming QB’s to have a higher rate of immediate success.

Now is the time to swing on another one, no team isn’t going very far without one anyway in today’s game so you might as well swing until you hit.

Even if Nagy and Pace are 1 and done after this year it doesn’t matter -even if Nagy doesn’t get much out of the player in this 1 year that doesn’t mean a different more competent coach won’t after him.

The rebuild should start again right now and it should start with drafting QB’s early and often until you get the guy. This team sucks and isn’t going anywhere, they have to know that (the top brass that is).. So I’d tell them to do their best and evaluate every QB in this draft and get one.

A first round QB would probably mean Nagy and Pace buy themselves 2-3 more years after they go 5-11 next year. Id6take that Riddle from Cincy in the 3rd round if he is there.

Only if he looks good under them, if not, stick to the plan and boot them. I personally think the only reason they’re here is because of the cost Vs what they lost during COVID..

If it doesn’t look good this upcoming year, kick them to the curb and bring in the next regime and let them evaluate.

I’d look at the guys that are projected to go in the 1st and 2nd round. This team isn’t doing itself any favors by grabbing any other position -including offensive line. Just start grabbing the best/most talented QB at your early draft positions.

A franchise QB isn't a luxury pick especially when you are coming off a 6-9-1 season with that pro bowler.

I can make a long list of quarterbacks that worked out great in the first round who were passed on by a whole bunch of GM's. Maybe the Bengals aren't the best example but every team wants that franchise quarterback and most teams in the top 10 picks don't have one.

Seemed to D either lost faith in Pagano as a play caller or the vets saw that Nagy was an incompetent boob and decided to start making business decisions to protect their health because they knew no matter what they did the offense so inept that they would be exposed by being on the field for long periods of time.

Ingram will be 32 next year, were already going to be paying Cohen twice what he's worth.. Gotta have a RB from the late round or undrafted FA.
