Beardown was right. Sox up 4-3. Hang in there, Rays.

Stong wind blowing left to right. Still, gotta catch that. Defense sucked today.

That cross wind probably helped keep the ball in the park however.

I know we're down. I don't care. Bring Jenks in for the 9th. See if we can end it in the bottom of the 9th. See, I don't want to lose this game without using Jenks.

Try and keep it a one run game with your best releiver.

I see what Cox was thinking there - if you're going to lose, might as well as be trying for the plate rather than having Cabrera strike out with the man on third. It forced the catcher to think about it and he messed up the play.

Now if that was the 7th inning, bad play.

That was a bad play 1st inning or last inning! I think they better move Cora back to coaching 3rd!

Is throwing your elbow at a fielder interference? The ball was in front of AJ stupid. Ozzie better make midnight mass tonight also!

AJ. Heads up all around. Not only on that "interference play," but on the ball Upton dogged in center. A cheap win, but a win nonetheless. Bout fucking time the Sox caught a break.

Glad to see you can admit is was a break. More than Hawk and DJ could say.

I wonder what the Rays will do when they appeal the call as in no way did Aybar "Impede AJ's progress to the base" which is how the rule reads.

I am always amazed at how an umpire that is right on the field misses this call.

Reminds me of an NBA official who calls a foul on a guy after the shooter jumps into the defender.

I think Hawk and DJ are no longer allowed to complain about any umpire ever again.

Talk about your spin masters. Hawk, D.J., what Cox did in the ninth was reckless.
I'm glad the Sox won -- since I was about ready to throw the remote through my TV screen in the top of the seventh.
After the Sox won in 2005, I told myself that I was going to calm down and not get so emotional during the games.
I guess I need to work on that.

-The Pollock does it again!!!! Gotta love that son of a bitch. Only if he plays for you of course.

-I don't mind the Cox play. With 2 outs you roll the dice. Tough to get back to back hits off Wheeler. With one out you don't do it. Luckily it worked out. Cox knew the risk. He rolled the dice.

Lucky win. I don't care.

Zobrist had the BALL as Anderson was ROUNDING THIRD BASE!
Roll the dice????
Anderson is one of the quickest guys on the team, and he should have been out by five or more steps.

Let me put it this way with the Cox play. Percentages. That's what it was.

Cabrera is batting .270. Probably lower against Wheeler. Or at least less likely then a .270 clip. So he makes an out over 7 out of 10 times

What's a better chance of happening?

Cabrera getting a hit or the catcher not handling the ball/bad throw. Don't you think a bad throw/bad bounce would happen more than 3 out of 10 times?

Get what I'm saying?

Right. But what's Cabrera hitting, with runners in scoring position, against Dan Wheeler? Probably not a lot of at bats against Wheeler in that spot. But you gotta figure, if given 100 at bats, he'd be .270 or less.

Look, I see your point. I could see people being against it. I'm just saying it's not horrible in my mind. I think, maybe, it was the higher percentage try. If only by a little bit.

I was right. And I still stand with my prediction of the Twins being 3 games behind the Sox when thier 14 game road trip ends.

Regarding that play in the 9th, if Cox holds Anderson, the game ends with Cabrera striking out. I have no issue with him sending the runner in that situation. "Should have been out" "could have been out" but he wasn't. Sometimes you have to force the defense to make a play or a throw. Cox did, the Rays didn't execute, and the Sox were the benefactors.

Tommorow is huge, especially that makeup fiasco. Hopefully Sox can get a run in that first inning and end that quick. Have a chance to pick up a game and a half on the Twins tommorow and it would be very nice to do just that.

It worked -- so it was the correct move.
There was no guarantee that the catcher would drop the ball or that OC would strike out.
If Zobrist is playing at regular depth and he makes an unbelievable throw to home that is dropped that's one thing. With the way the defense was constituted, it was an extremely risky move.

One more thing. It doesn't matter if Cox "was willing to live with his decision". If the catcher hangs onto to the ball, do you really believe Cox wouldn't be getting his head handed to him by the media and fans alike.
The throw was up the line -- and it was well ahead of Anderson.

Down a run, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs. You get one clutch basehit. Odds are the next batter, whoever he is, is not going to come up with another clutch hit. Given the situation, I have zero problem with sending the runner.

I am assumng your bigger play was in the 9th, as I was still walking home from Wrigley I didn't get to see it, but

The Doug Eddings & AJ combo seems to work well for you guys.

Now that you guys are 2 years removed fom infamous drop 3rd strike can you see how crazy of a call that is? and just in case you missed it, same umpire.

As an umpire you make some calls that might not be perfect, but they are expected and have been called that way in baseball for years.

If you try to steal second and the ball beats you, you better make an amazing slide or you are out.

If the second baseman gets the ball on a double play and is "In the neighborhood" but off the base, and it would not have been close, you are out.

and I would say 99 out of 99 TIMES! when ou are dead in a run down and pull the 'jump into the defender play' you are called out because an umpire shouldn't act like it's his first game.

yes I would question the motive of a Doug Eddings. Not that he has any favoritism or even dislike of the Sox, but it looks like he is the guy who wants to make the "PERFECT" call and thus gets caught in such scenarios.

I laughed out oud after listening to Paruch's take on the play. He said it was a good move to send the runner, because the Sox had already been granted one miracle -- Konerko's hit. Asking for a second miracle -- a hit by OC -- would've been pushing the odds. Hey Brian, the second miracle already took place -- the catcher mishandling the throw that allowed Anderson to score. Remember, the throw beat him home by several steps.
As for the call in the 10th. I guess you could say that Eddings was following the letter of the law. It's a judgment call -- and the Sox were fortunate that it went their way. Hey, maybe that was the second miracle.
