Sox to play tiebreaker, start O's series
08/24/2008 8:30 PM ET
By David Just / MLB.com

CHICAGO -- The White Sox have a doubleheader of sorts on Monday in Baltimore, with the scheduled completion of their April 28 home game against the Orioles and the regularly scheduled contest to follow.

The first game was suspended after the 11th inning with the score tied, 3-3, because of rain, and even though the game will be played in Baltimore, the White Sox are the home team for the remaining innings.

Manager Ozzie Guillen has yet to choose a pitcher to pick up where Scott Linebrink left off in the suspended game. Linebrink has been on the disabled list since July 26, so he won't be getting the call.

"We're going to see how we use the bullpen [on Sunday], then we'll make the decision [on Monday]," Guillen said. "It all depends. It's either going to be [D.J.] Carrasco or [Matt] Thornton. It's between those two guys."

The first three batters due up for the Orioles are Kevin Millar, Aubrey Huff and Luke Scott, who are left-handed. That makes Thornton, a lefty, the likely candidate.

The lineup and batting order of both teams must remain exactly the same as the lineup at the moment of the suspension, and no player removed before the game was called may be returned to the lineup.

But, a player who was not with the club when the game was suspended may be used as a substitute, even if he has taken the place of a player no longer with the club. That gives the White Sox a few options, since Carrasco and Horacio Ramirez have been added to the bullpen, and Ken Griffey Jr. to the outfield in the meantime.

On Saturday, Guillen selected Clayton Richard to start the regularly scheduled game that follows.

Richard is currently on his second stint with the big league club, recalled last week to start against Seattle. Despite a disappointing three starts during his first callup, the left-hander impressed against the Mariners, throwing six shutout innings and walking just one batter.

Does he hold similar expectations this time around?

"Not really," Richard said. "Just go out there and try to make them put the ball in play and let our defense do the work. Hopefully, I can get early contact and let our defense make the plays."

Richard's undefined role on the team doesn't change his outlook or approach. Since the White Sox will shift to a four-man rotation after his start on Monday, Richard will be relegated to relief duties.

"It's a little bit different," Richard said. "I don't know if it's tough, just something you get used to. I've kind of gotten used to it. Just being ready to pitch every day."

Pitching matchup
CWS: LHP Clayton Richard (1-2, 6.75)
In his last start, Richard earned his first Major League win with a dominating performance against the Mariners. The left-hander scattered five hits over six shutout innings. He struck out only two batters, but issued just one free pass. In his next start, Richard will be facing the Orioles for the first time in his career. Of his four starts, the two at home were much better than the two on the road. Richard gave up nine runs in 4 1/3 innings at Kansas City on Aug. 3.

BAL: LHP Chris Waters (2-0, 4.98)
Waters has yet to follow up his dazzling Major League debut with anything even close to that eight-inning, one-hit performance, but he did show improvement in his last outing when he was able to overcome a shaky first two innings -- where he allowed four runs -- to settle down, get through five, and take home his second Major League win. He was given enough cushion to work with -- the Orioles scored 11 runs in support of the left-hander -- and was able to regain command of his fastball and challenge hitters in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Tidbits
Guillen was asked on Sunday to identify what worries him most about his club down the stretch. His answer is likely shared by a handful of other managers. "Health," Guillen said. "If we stay healthy, I think this ballclub is going to compete all year long. I think those guys compete well. I think those guys are hungry." ... Javier Vazquez moved past Al Leiter and Andy Pettitte into 65th place on the all-time strikeouts list with 1,978 after his loss on Saturday. ... The White Sox have scored 10 runs in a game 16 times this season compared to just 10 times in 2007. They have also scored five or more runs in a single inning 20 times and have batted around 23 times.

I didn't know newbies were allowed to play in this game. Its gonna be wierd seeing the Sox in the road greys as the "home" team. Best case scenerio is to hit a HR right off and take the win, and take it right to 'em for the regular game. Have a chance to pick up a game and a half on the Twins tommorow, and it would be very nice to do just that.

Considering how bad the Orioles' bullpen has been as of late due to injuries, a quick HR would be just what the doctor ordered. The Sox are going to have to pour it on offensively because Baltimore's lineup has been lighting up the scoreboard since the ASB, with Mora and Huff leading the way with huge 2nd half numbers.

The suspended game starts at 5:05 PM on WCIU, with the regular game after that...

The Twins have three in Seattle and 4 in Oakland.

If memory serves, Scott Linebrink was on the mound for the White Sox and George Sherrill was pitching for the O's when rain suspended the April 28th wraparound game. Interestingly enough, both pitchers are now on the DL for their respective teams, along with third baseman Joe Crede. I also believe Juan Uribe was playing second base, and Pablo Ozuna was still with the Southsiders. There has been talk that if the Sox were to place outfielder DeWayne Wise on the DL with his groin injury, they were going to call up a 12th pitcher from the minors. At this point, I thought they were going to make such a move, but Wise has yet to be disabled. From what Bill Melton said on the Comcast SportsNet White Sox postgame yesterday, he seems to think Adam Russell, who wasn't on the team back in April, could "start" the top 12th this afternoon.

Also, in this delayed game, we had lost the lead in the 10th and Uribe tied it back up in the bottom half with a 2-out solo homer.

Griffey is eligible to play in case people were wondering. We get last wraps. We're the home team.

Hey, I wonder if we can wear our home uniforms.

Beardown, I believe the White Sox will be in the traditional home pinstripes & the Orioles in the road grays. I feel like Ed Farmer writing that... As for the rules, Griffey is eligible because he wasn't on the team back in April. By the way, Joe Crede has been activated from the DL, and DeWayne Wise has been placed there with a groin injury.

Also of note in the delayed game, the Orioles will have no remaining bench players. Aubrey Huff got ejected so he'll need to be replaced, Adam Jones has a broken foot so he can't play CF, and their shortstop is somewhere in the minors so he will also need to be replaced. Plus we have more dudes in the bullpen, and Dye and Griffey are eligible off the bench. We do have to sub in for Crede though.

Mother Fucker!!!!

Quentin almost ended this game in 10 minutes leading off this suspended game for the Sox. He just missed it.

Orioles manager fucked up. He walked Griffey with Dye waiting to pinch hit. Bases loaded. We couldn't get it done.

I hate 1 hour loses. Fuck.

What has happened to the bullpen that Joe Morgan described as the best he had ever seen, earlier in the season? I know Linebrink is out for a while now, but what has become of the rest of the bullpen? Thats 3 games out of the last 4, the bullpen has lost for them. Not good.

Morgan was wrong. I said it at the time.

You know what Morgan also says? He says "Well, Joe Morgan is the greatest 2nd baseman to ever play the game in my humble opinion."

He's wrong about that too. Morgan is an ass wipe. Always has been. Always will be.

Crede looks fine. Doesn't look like he's in any pain. He made a line drive out in the first game. Made a couple nice plays at 3rd.

Hopefully he can get hot for 2 or 3 weeks.

What is Hawk bitching about? It clearly was a bawk on Richard. Hawk is mad that the 1st base ump didn't call it. Who cares? They got it right. The home plate guy saw it.

Anyway, Clayton Richard looks good through 3 innings.

Fuck this shit. This is typical Richard. Looks great for a few innings and then blows up.

Take his ass out Ozzie. You can still win this fucker. Don't let it get too far away from you.

Ok. I was wrong. Richard settled down. Pitched a scoreless 5th and 6th.

Have somebody ready in the bullpen, however. If he lets the first man on in the 7th go to the pen.

I'm not sure anyone is aware of this, but the White Sox have recalled pitcher Lance Broadway between games & have sent second baseman Chris Getz back to Triple "A" Charlotte...for now. By the way, enjoy Juan Uribe at second base tonight, fans. Alexei Ramirez should be back at second tomorrow in Baltimore, with Orlando Cabrera back at shortstop. It may be a preview tonight seeing #10 at his natural position, but I'm in the minority on this one. Alexei has become more than capable as an everyday second baseman, no matter how good of a glove Uribe brings to the ballpark.

Right move. Dotel gets the 7th. Richard leaves with the lead. Don't fuck it up Dotel.

"The SCORE'S" Steve Stone feels Clayton Richard's 6 inning effort tonight qualifies as a "quality start" allowing only 3 runs and currently is on the up side of this 4-3 White Sox lead in the regularly scheduled game...

Again, Ozzie leaves a guy in to start an inning, and the pen comes in with runner(s) on. Thornton should have started the 8th. I said to my Dad earlier that I don't think 4 runs is enough to win this game. I hope I'm fuckin wrong.

Well, Sox didn't deserve this one either. Orioles gave it to them.

Alexei scored twice. Once on an error off the bat of Dye. Had they made the play the inning would have been over. Alexei also scored, from 3rd, on a bawk. Quentin was the batter, during the bawk. He went on to pop up to end the inning. So we won by a run and got two gift runs. Who cares? You never apologize for a win.

Still pissed about the earlier loss. But we could have lost them both. If the Twins lose we pick up a half game.

Here is what's pretty impressive. Sox are 3-0, in Contreres's spot, since his injury. Gotta love that. Kudos to Broadway and Richard.
