for a myriad of reasons, but this one is the latest insane suggestion. The Cubs should ease up on the accelerator and get into the WC slot and not the NLC divisional champs position in order to avoid the potential DBacks matchup.

Idiocy.

Win every game you can. Face the DBacks in the first round? First, let me say that I hope the Cubs get into the playoffs. Weirder shit has happened. See last year's NLEast race. Should they meet the DBacks in the first or second round, you just have to beat them. If they don't, then the season is a dissappointment and we get to make up clever little slogans for 101 years and '09... whatever.

Beat every team you play. Win every series. No arguments, no problems.

Fucking idiocy.

Rant finished.

The Method to his madness is the issue.

I think if you said who would you rather play? the Mets or the D backs in a short series The Mets are the answer. However, it just doesn't look like that will happen.

Bring on the D Bags, then the White Sox in the "Loser Leaves Town " World Series.

No question, the answer would be the Mets. However, I remember feeling relieved in '03 that the Marlins had beat the Giants as I thought the Giants were the superior team.

Dbacks might not even make the playoffs, so what's he worried about?

Jurko has a habit of saying something so incredibly stupid that he manages to rile up the listeners and the emailers and the evil bile spewing cretins on the message board.
He's just adding a little extra jalapeno to your sports talk.
That being said, what a silly thing to say. My god man.

It's one thing to take a position to generate interest. I understand that's part of the job. Like you said (far more politely than I did. I'm in a foul mood), what a silly thing to say indeed.

It was a silly thing to say.

But it worked.

I'm sure Jurko can fill a seat and probably have it screaming for mercy.
Especially if he is a bit gassy.

The fact that the Cubs are 30 games over .500 at home, suggests that having the home field advantage is a big deal. Thus losing the division, would create a scenario where they might have to play Milwaukee in the NLCS in a series in which Milwaukee would enjoy home field advantage. I know they recently swept the Brew Crew up in Milwaukee (I was at one of the games there-you darn well should be happy for me too) but I would still rather they have home field up till the world series. So I much prefer they win the division. Besides, then I can run out and get the 2008 Central division T-shirt, before buying the 2008 National League Champions T-shirt, before finally buying the 2008 Champions T-shirt that will be ultimate in fine clothing choices in Chicago come late October, when THE CUBS END THE WAIT IN 2008!!!

While Jurco went about this point the wrong way, I get what he is saying.

Here would be the Cubs, blitzing everybody in the NL, with 101 wins and homefield throughout, and the first 3 pitchers they face are Webb, Haren, and The Big Unit. I know the Cub have a good offense, but that is no easy task for any team, and even though Randy Johnson is no spring chicken anymore, the next game he drops to the Cubs will be his first.

The Cubs are a very solid team, but if the end up getting the Dbacks in the first round, it would not surprise me at all if they went 3 and out again. Unlikely yes, but not surprising. Not going up against those starters.

Why is everyone worrying so much about facing Webb, Haren and Johnson? I know they're good, but aren't Zambrano, Dempster & Harden just as good? Plus the first 2 games are at Wrigley and the DBacks don't hit on the road; they might not even score 1 run in either of those games. The Cubs just need to squeeze out a run or 2 in each game, no big deal.

That's one thing I've never gotten as a sports fan. "We don't want to face them."

Why not? If you lose to them, you've lost to guys you admit are good. If you beat them, then you've proven your team isn't just hype.

I look back at the most recent Superbowl the Bears were in against the Colts. If the Bears won, they took on a premiere team. With losing, they beat the rest of the field to get there. Sure, there is no prize for second place; but how stupid would it sound for Brian Urlacher or Lance Briggs to have said; "Oh, I sure hope Indy loses, because I don't want to face Peyton Manning!"

Well, thats kind of a bad example. If they didn't want to face Manning, that means they would have rather faced Captain Hoodie and Tom Brady. The margin of victory for the AFC would have been much larger had the Bears played the Pats in SBXLI.

But Frank, my point is that you play to get to the Series/Superbowl/whatever and then to play your best to win it. I think its always a cop out to say that they'd rather not face that certain team.

If that certain team is standing between your team and the ultimate prize, you take and give it your best and take their best. When the dust clears, the best team wins.

This whole, "Well, they wouldn't of won if they played fill-in-the-blank" is just talking head BS. Team fill-in-the-blank didn't get the job done to get to that round of the playoffs, period. If they couldn't win the earlier round of playoffs; why all of a sudden they would be good enough to win in a later round/the championship?

Thats a great point. I dont get it either. Zambrano, Harden, and Dempster are as good as Haren, Johnson, and Webb. The Cubs have a much, much better offense and a better bullpen also. I dont even think it'll go four games, although obviously theres still alot of baseball left to be played.

EXACTLY! You want to face the top competition and beat them-then there is no debate as to whether you were deserving of the championship. Bring on Atlanta, bring on Dallas, this is for Mike and Papa Bear Halas- Oh, sorry....I got carried away there. Musta been those Mike Ditka Kick Ass Cigars I got on Saturday.

The fact that AZ swept the cubs last season without Unit (13-0 career vs cubs) or Haren (14-6 3.10) should make every cub fan worry.

Again, you fail to mention the Cubs end of it...unlike last year, they'll have Harden and Dempster (starting). That should been enough to calm your nerves.

lol. But honestly, I can't stand that shit. If a team wins a championship; they were the best team that season. They played the most games and won the one's that counted. That crap of "Well, if the White Sox played the Yankees, dey wouldn't of made it to the World Series" is all speculative.

You play the team that was scheduled against you. If you win, you win. If you advance, you advance. As much as I can't stomach the 72 Dolphins, they won all their games and won the championship. That "are they better than the Patriots?" is again, speculative.

If I was a Cubs fan; I'd want the Cubs to get another shot at AZ. The Cubs of 2008 are far better than the team of 2007. While the pitching might not be vastly improved (although, Big Z stunk last year compared to this year) you have to like what the offense and the defense of the Cubs are doing this year.

This honestly looks to be the best Cubs team in decades, and everything is there for the taking. That whole "are they up to it, can they beat AZ" is just hand-wringing. Cubs fans and the players should be of an attitude of "Just Bring It" versus "Oh, I hope we don't have to play.....THEM!!!"

You're right and wrong. Z was below average in the regular season but in the playoffs he was dominant. If Lou came out out of his drunken bender long enough to realize Carlos might have had a CG, 1 ER game, the series could have been different. Lou deserves a shitload more blame than he got last year. They has the most talented team in the NL and didnt win a playoff game. Pathetic.

Oh I agree with you on his stuff in the playoffs; but in September last year folks were holding their breath if they would get "Good Z or Bad Z" when he went out on the mound. This year, he's been a true Ace (with the occassional game like last night, or the four 4 homer game earlier in the season) but that's what you have to expect in baseball. Ups and downs. You just hope the team as a whole is on the upswing in the last week of September and into October.
