I hate dome football, I've been saying for years to move to the southeast side.

Yeah, that's the ticket, put the Bears in Hegewisch. That's even dumber than moving the Bears to Gary. At least that would have bilked the Indiana government out of taxpayer dollars. What would you extract from Hegewisch?

But yes, dome-and-carpet football is the worst, and the Bears shouldn't partake in it. Football should be played outside on grass. The Bears would build their Arlington Heights dome and still have a worse venue than the Packers.

I would guess it would be a retractable roof stadium.

The only people who hate dome football are the painfully unathletic and slow masochists.

And annually pine for "The good old days". And I'm not for putting a dime in the McCaskey family's pockets, let them move. Or sell.

Denied. Football in the elements is great...rain, snow, whatever.

Also, Bear weather.

Andre Dawson became unathletic and slow from years of playing dome baseball, what about him?

Olympic Stadium wasn't a dome until well after he left.

Yes it was. It was a retractable roof that never retracted properly through '98, but the real problem was that cheap shitty Astroturf rolled over concrete. Bad for the Expos, the Oilers, all the concrete donut teams, even the Bears for a while. Can't believe we got away with it for so many years.

No, they didn't build the tower and attach the roof until '88, after Dawson was long gone.

But the Astroturf was the problem.

As an Arlington Heights resident and a season ticket holder I of course am on board, especially if done right, unlike soldier field. Retractable roof, mixed use area. Like SoFi. It would be so much more preferable to yet another Glen or Randhurst Village.

I could get giddy thinking about tailgating in my driveway, walking to the game and actually enjoying being there in December. As opposed to often freezing at games and spending half the day in the car going to and from soldier field. Not to mention the concerts, sportsbook and other potential year round attractions.

BACK TO REALITY: I can't imagine what the PSLs would cost. And I can't imagine the various parties ever collaborating to get something like this done.

I remember indoor soccer on turf as a kid. Didn’t think much of the surface but I think it was over a non concrete floor. Can’t remember as this was around 1983 and I was a wee lad. In college the football field was still turf (and worn out turf) and I remember how hard it was when we visited the field one October day to throw the ball around. Can see knees being destroyed long term on it (vs the other long term damage I’ve done to them without turf).

More Sting era. That’s the one time I’m 100% sure I ran around on turf. Brother played a game at old stadium and then had a scrimmage with the sting for 20 minutes or something. I was on the team one age division younger but would usually warm up with older team anyways. Probably to keep me occupied

Can’t remember for sure I’d they used a multi surface or an actual turf at pheasant run and St. Charles high. Indoor was big there for a while in early to mid 80s.

I agree, but the Bears playing surface sucks. The grass/turf hybrid like Green Bay uses would probably be the best thing for the Bears and Soldier Field in general.

Yeah, that makes the most sense. There's plastic fiber to reinforce the roots, but it's still real grass and real dirt. That's the system that should be as leaguewide as possible, though I realize some sites like the Superdome don't really have that option.

Your overall point still stands, though. If they can play football outdoors in Buffalo, Cleveland, Denver, and Green Bay, then Chicago can manage to continue to do so as well.

the surface at Soldier Field topic was where I really enjoyed Urlacher's bluntness. You'd hear ad nauseum from the likes of Jerry Angelo and reps from the Chicago Park District of how proud they were of the maintenance done and the field conditions.

Whenever Urlacher was asked he could always be counted on to describe it as awful and the worst in the league.
