Nobody will trade for Foles and if you're cutting him then the cap hit will more negate any savings in salary. Also, how much "better" does Smith make the Bears? If they squeak into the play-offs @ 9-7 and lose in the first round what have you gained? A lower draft pick? Seems like a bad idea. If they don't go all in for a legit starter then they are better off keeping Foles and drafting a QB in rd1. Maybe trade up to get a guy who might actually play in 2021.

I've always liked the guy, but he's 36 now. It would be interesting if he became a Bear.

Former 1st all-round pick and you can get him cheap.

Keep Foles as backup, Sign Smith short term, Draft a Qb.

I wonder if Pace's recruiting pitch will include a dossier outlining all the great orthopedic surgeons who live in Chicago.

  that's some funny shit, right there.

With the Bears offensive line, Alex Smith will be dead by week 5.

I can't imagine how difficult his recovery was. My wife has been in hundreds of debridement cases over the years, and she says the can be downright nasty. I think he had like seven of them.

Are you planning on keeping 3 QBs active during the season? or is Foles or the rookie going to be inactive?

Edit: 3rd most likely option - O-line gets Smith killed in 1st week. Problem solved.

While I can see Nagy and Pace panic wrestling their way into this.. I’m not in favor of it. Smith is old and not too far removed from an incredibly serious injury. A move like this isn’t going to fix the QB situation.

But.. I won’t be completely shocked if they fall back to this and go into camp letting Smith and Foles battle it out.

The thing is, this doesn’t help the team going forward into the future. Even if Smith outplays Foles he’s not a long term solution which leaves you in the same place with Pace and Nagy in terms of their future after next season. It has to be a draft pick or an insane trade for a guy like Watson -success on those terms would be the only way to justify bringing Nagy and Pace back on new contracts if there’s success next year.

the problem with a draft pick is that you have to hope someone falls to you

In the meantime, the viable veterans will be scooped up

I haven't looked lately but have the draft prognosticators stopped projecting Mac Jones as the second best QB? Maybe he falls and you grab him.

There’s a decent chance he will be there at 20 but I don’t know if I’d use the term “fall”. I’m not sure what you’ve read but I don’t think anyone outside of June Jones has Mac as a top 2 qb pick. That said, I would draft him at that point if available.

Has anyone ever had Mac as the #2 QB in the draft?

Maybe I have missed something

I hope they do sign him. Season's not going anywhere and it's more likely it ends in both guys being tossed out of town.

I don't think Jones' agent has ever had him that high in the draft. Best you could argue would be 3rd after Lawrence/ Wilson, ahead of Fields/Lance.
But most mocks have Lawrence/Wilson/Fields or Lawrence/Fields/Wilson then Lance / Jones or Jones / Lance

To your point and to be fair to Dolphin, I see PFF has a mock draft out today that has Jones as the 3rd QB picked (#6 to the Eagles).

what a shite mock draft, Wilson falls behind Fields and Jones? C'mon man

https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021-nfl ... ts-at-no-4

tho the writer disclaims that it's an iteration targeting each teams need/weakness at the position, not necessarily what they suggest or think will happen?

McShay has 4 QB's in first 4 picks

Image

Mac Jones 5th QB selected, 9th overall to the trade-up Niners in McShay's mock

if you want a 1st round QB, prolly gonna have to trade up if you're not already slotted in the top 10-15. Do the Bears spend draft capital trading up for another QB

Smith would be best in a traditional backup QB role. He's probably still better than the majority of backups, but can't be trusted for more than a few games with his injury history.

He gets a lot of credit for being a leader and I can still see a team like Chicago signing him and giving him a chance vs. Foles to win a starting job, but I have no confidence he would last more than a few games even if he is marginally better than Smith.

Smith also was not exactly lighting it up for Washington. I'm not sure he's actually better than Foles.

If Bears don't pull off a miracle though, he would have to fall into a handful of QB's they consider. With the interior of the offensive line line looking like a strength, and the possibility of landing an OT in Round 1, the Bears best chance to return to the playoffs may be to play a conservative style of offense behind a running game/offensive line and hope the defense can rebound into a top 10-12 in the league.

It's hard to see them being explosive on offense. While Robinson should be back (assuming he's franchised), they should at least be able to be a competent offense if they have can protect the QB and run the ball. Big IF's.

Mond projected in the 3rd rd in most mocks, 7th? QB taken, after the consensus top 5 and even after Trask in most

Its an interesting discussion and he looks at different things than I, but I think Trevor Laurence is the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck.

Trevor Lawrence is the only guy in this draft that looks to be ready from day one, has had success against top level competition, and has the physical tools.

The other guys all have question marks, really hard to judge Wilson who looks like he would break in half after being hit.

I think Simms also said Mahomes was the best QB in that draft.

I'd like to see Mond on the Bears.

They need to trade up to #2 and make sure they get him.

I haven't watched much of Jones. Is he actually good?

Obvious answer is nobody knows. He played in arguably the greatest offense in the history of CFB.

How much is attributable to him, his skill guys, line play...no idea. I watched several of their games; I think he’s better than a mccarron-type, but I think he tops out as a quality backup.
