If by "contend" you mean the Cubs might be within 4-5 games of the division/WC in mid September, sure. By definition that is "in contention" but not truly a threat IMO. They won't be a doormat, but will probably end up around 80 wins. Decent, but not a playoff team.

The all or nothing approach at the plate this team has had going on 4 years now is unwatchable, and I am not a baseball purist in any sense.

I get the math and science behind this, but you would think there could be a happy medium between 'HR, BB, or K' vs "hey lets manufacture a couple of runs when we need to."

Given that this Cubs team has been pretty damn good for the most part over the last few years, and that cooler weather which is not HR friendly certainly is prevalent in April, early May, late September, and October, it would behoove them to string a few hits together now and then.

The “ excuse” for it being one of the three outcomes is that there’s so much velocity in the game now that it’s just not “ easy” to beat the shifts , sacrifice bunt , etc as batters are having a hard enough time just putting the bat on the ball .

Which is a load of bunk. For example, look at the numbers that Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu, and most of the Minnesota Twins have put up over the last couple of seasons.


Again, a happy medium. 2 out nobody on in the 4th inning of a 1-1 game, go ahead and try to hit the ball nine miles. Down 3 runs in the 8th against a premier setup man with a runner on 2nd, you better be trying to extend the inning by knocking in the guy at 2nd and bringing the tying run to the plate.
