I usually start the year by removing the four or six screws to lift the fan and top panel completely off then hose them out good from the inside. I'll do it again after cottonwood season is over, which means it should happen today, I guess. We're just starting to get a little rain and it's supposed to cool off a little, the A/C has been non-stop for a few days straight.

I'm not aware of a special cleaner for the aluminum fins/coils, would scrubbing bubbles help or hurt? I usually just use the garden hose.

Test your sump pumps now before the big rains come. If you have situations where the sump is going off every couple minutes for days at a time like I do, get the two pump battery back up setup.
Second, warm weather is on the horizon. Uncover your ac if you're the type to cover it in winter before you fire her up.
If you had any kinds of problems last year schedule a service for Monday or Tuesday. The contractors probably have availability, it's warm enough to do proper testing, and if there's issues you have time to make an informed repair or replacement decision before the big rounds of hot weather come.

Oh for sure. Really heat pumps aren't really designed to heat a home when the outdoor temp is bow freezing. Some claim they can heat a home down to 0 outdoor ambient but I've not found one yet that truly does.

I got a heat pump when I replaced the AC up north in 2019. It is designed to run at 25 and above. It goes back to traditional heat (aux setting) when it is 25 outside. I have an electronic thermostat (Cor) that shows which heat is being used.

Can't agree more about the back up battery for the sump. As a first time homeowner I lost a bunch of stuff one spring because of this. About 3-4 years ago in the next house I had, a backup was installed by my buddy and was thankful it was. At least twice I lost power during strong rain storms and the thing kept going off every 6 or 7 seconds. Saved my ass big time. Current house I bought a house from 1938 with no sump and the entire basement flooded twice a couple inches deep before I paid to have drain tile laid and a sump put in with a back up. Had to tear out all the custom build in cabinetry.

My step daughter’s hot water heater has been shutting down occasionally. Apparently the Honeywell pilotless ignition control gets false status errors to kill it.

If you're replacing a water heater, don't buy it from home depot. The warranty processing is ridiculous. It may cost more to have a plumbing company do it, but it's worth it.

check your manufacturers' warranty on it. If it's still valid, they will replace it for free. you would just need to pay for the labor if you are hiring a plumber.

watch out for scammers too. 5 years ago my water heater went out but i had a 6 year warranty with 2 months left on it. i called out 2 companies and they were forcing me to buy a new one from them. i brought up the warranty and they acted like they didnt deal with it.

Then found a honest guy who said i'm still covered, he would just get it from the shop, and only charge me for labor.

If your current water heater is working fine but it's really old. proactively replace it or just let it ride till it dies?

How old are we talking?
Generally, if it's older than 12 years (unless on great lake Michigan water), chances are its due for replacement. Truth is that when it goes, it will happen at a bad time, weekend, night, holiday, and you'd be without hot water for a bit. Now, that's assuming it's not gonna spring a leak. If it's installed somewhere where water gushing out of it could cause a problem, I'd say it's best to replace it before damage is done.

Our hot water heater gave out a few months ago, was about to go to bed and heard water running in the basement. The downstairs toilet sticks sometimes so I figured that was it, but no, water was streaming out of the water heater. Thankfully our next door neighbor is a plumber so he went and got us a new one the next morning. Did take a bit though as the first three plumbing supply companies he uses didn't have the kind he needed in stock. He did the sump pump and battery back up too but one of those was on back order as well. Guess plumbing shit falls under the supply chain issues. Will be dropping a bunch more $ next month to get a back flow thingamabob put in and a sewer pipe repaired.

I would also like to add, if you have a water softening/filtration system that uses any form of salt, make sure you keep the salt loaded in it. It actually helps get the most life out of your water heater.
