Our Rheem is approaching 20 years old so probably should consider proactive replacement. Our neighbor (licensed plumber) touts tankless but not sure I want the maintenance, nor do I think I will see the payback (I am 61).

When we replaced our furnace 2 years ago we had Abt do it and were pleased. So considering them for the water heater. We are on Lake Michigan water. 2 of us in the house but at times houseguests push it to 5 and we do want hot water for everyone. Based on all this your opinions are appreciated.

our house has had 2 additions added on and miscellaneous plumbing work done here or there. Its a ranch where most everything is exposed in the basement. the plumbing pipes look like something out of a dr suess book down there so later this summer I will be embarking on rerunning pex throughout. 3 separate hot water manifolds and a circulator pump. using PexA connectors. will buy the milwaukee extruder for the project.

I built homes in college as a laborer and was able to help all the other tradesmen when they were there. I'm also a giant cheap ass.

my wife convinced me to contract out our kitchen remodel (which required moving the stairs to the basement of our home). I relented and allowed a company to do the kitchen. i still did the demo, electrical and moved the stairs. and these guys did way more than i would of and the work they did was out of this world. but it still pained me to write them a check.

i was just told that my pex job is getting put on hold as i need to put up fencing post haste. for.....alpacas.

Well that explains it. I find you to be an odd, but interesting person. I mean garbage dumpsters and alpacas?

Purchased a 50 gallon AO Smith from Lowe's Darko. I stayed away from Home Depot's Rheem. Plumber is coming in about an hour to install.

Awesome. By the way the HD Rheems and the Pro Rheems do have 2 different gas valves. That's the main difference, beside the warranty stuff. The HD one has an electronic valve with a thermopile and the Pro one has a mechanical valve. We have found the mechanical valves to be more reliable.

when you are cheap and have no cleanliness standards it makes for oddities.

I'm still watching, but i've come to believe that if there was such a vast giant collaboration to elaborately hide treasure on oak island, there is no way NO ONE didn't ever come back for it. just forgot it. not one person died and told their kids about it, etc etc.

also the narration is grating on me. I don't know how they'll be able to continue the show unless the last 2 episodse break some stuff wide open.

It is a shame that there really are not a lot of repairmen anymore that know what they are doing and their charge to just show up to your house just keeps going up.

We had an issue with our washer. I researched it and found a couple possible issues. Neither stopped the problem. So we finally called the company and they sent out a "repairman". It was $100 for him to just walk into the house and he spent most of his time trying to sell us on the home warranty plan for $50 a month. I am fairly certain I knew just as much about our washer as he did. And just about every repair he said it could be was almost as much money as a new washer. So I sent him on his way and we are looking at new washers.

Agreed. That's why if you find a reputable guy, you make sure you save his info.

We have a local washer/dryer guy. Its $60 for him to walk in the door, but we have used him 3 times with great success. Quick, knowledgeable, and quality work.
We also have a local vacuum repair shop run buy a guy with 3 teeth who smokes so much the walls in the place are yellow (literally), but again really good work at reasonable rates.

Things got too cheap. It's hard to justify a walk in fee for any appliance these days. Potential $200-400 repair on a washing machine or buy a brand new one for $650. Easy choice.

It's been a long time and no camelids were ever on this farm but there was a family member, by marriage not blood, that was involved in it in the early 2000's. After repeatedly being pressured by said person to get in because look at all the money people were making and driving them to farms that offered boarding and breeding services I told my wife the whole thing struck me as a Ponzi scheme targeting 60+ year old women and homosexuals and that the family member would never make a dime. Guess what? She never made a dime.

Fine for a pet, market probably is a lot more reasonable now but until there is a market for excess stock there is no market. Just like Ostriches and Emu's being let out of that back of trailers in California after eggs stopped selling for a grand during the 90's the next big thing in ag is rarely a big thing except for the people that figure out how to market it in the beginning.

Understand, these were 5 figure animals, all the way up to low 6 figure. At least they were that when you were buying, if you were a seller.... nah, animal aint so special anymore. That cria needed to be a different color than I thought was going to be popular when I sold the breeding to you a year ago. Whatever. It was always something. Perhaps she was involved with scammers but I heard the same song and dance everywhere.

My experience has been (taking care of several family member's needs) is it is way cheaper than that. You are spot on about the repairman and then the part(s)! What I see even more than going for the $600 new is the several reliable guys running craigslist/FB businesses where a used refurbished anything is $150-$200 depending on what your preferences are. These have been all good working washer, dryers, fridges and even ovens.

I also heard Alpaca people don't make anything more than selling off young to other goofs. Mainly they make some money on sheered hair but I doubt you can make it worthwhile without a giant herd. Way cheaper to buy sheep I guess?

This is a sunk endeavor for sure. my wife spins her own yarn but i'm not expecting housing and caring for alpacas is likely to offset her wool costs. this is also not a flight by night thing. my wife has painstakingly researched this for almost 2 years. this is her rodeo. if i can buy a boat and all the BS that comes with it for a drawer of fish in our freezer every year, she can spend a fraction of that on alpacas i guess.

There isn't enough of the fleece to pay for the shearing to be honest. Same for a lot of the back yard sheep people unless you have 50 head that are merino or at least suit quality wool. I can't remember what our shearer said about alpacas but he hated shearing llamas.
At least with sheep you get lamb chops.

Yeah, I'm not harshing on Mrs. hnd's endeavor here. If she wants them, good for her. Just a little flashback to the year 2000.
