Protecting bums @ QB?

Build the Oline first.

The QBs will come.

No.

This isn’t 1985.

Defenses are faster now.

What team has won with this philosophy?

QB is the most important position on the team and it is not even close. You take care of that position first. You can find a 10 yr tackle in the 2nd and 3rd round

All super bowl winners have borderline great to great offensive lines.

Every single one.

So no teams followed that philosophy.

Thanks.

They all followed it.

That’s my point.

Do you want specific names and years?

I’m not putting that effort into this convo.

So every team that has won built the OL before getting a QB?

That is just wrong, completely wrong.

Tampa won because they got the QB decision right. Not because they built an OL and a QB followed.

KC won because they got the QB decision right. Not because they built an OL and a QB followed.

NE won because they got the QB decision right. Not because they built an OL and a QB followed.

GB has won in the past because they got the QB decision right......

Bateman to the Ravens is a super solid pick.

All those teams made an effort to build an offensive line before and during the offseason they got their QB.

Yes QB is very important.

As Bears fans we don’t know what good QB play looks like because whenever we’ve had a good offensive line we’ve had a bad QB, and vice versa.

I just prefer to build the O-Line first.

Tampa Bay, in 2020, took an OT in the first round. Prior to that, the last time they did was in 2006. Kansas City, in 2013, took an OT in the first round. Prior to that, it was 2008.

While it's inarguable that you would rather have a great offensive line than not have one it is hard to justify that Super Bowl winning teams are built by significant investment in OL in the first round.

This is completely false and it tells me you do no research, don’t watch games, and use nothing more than emotions and dumb talking points to formulate your opinions.

Fields was asked to run the ‘Y’ or ‘Y cross’ (go watch tape of the Nebraska game) which involves reads coming from one side of the field all the way to the other side of the field. He’d get into 4th and 5th reads all the time. Haskins and some of the other QB’s from OSU were never asked to run this type of offense under Meyer and Tressell.

There’s much more I could bring up but I’m not doing the research for you. Go spend hours looking up articles, scouting reports and YouTube breakdown vids yourself.

Look, you can hate the pick -the Bears got the right player imo but they have bad coaches who could still screw him up. But if you’re going to hate the pick and give reasons, don’t just make shit up or repeat tired pseudo analysis that everyone reaches for when they diss a QB. Calling him a ‘1 read guy’ is hilariously stupid and misinformed.

And by the way JBills.. the Bears can still get quality starting O-lineman in this draft. Acting like it has to be in the 1st round or most of the successful linemen on these teams you bring up are all 1st rounders is also showing your strong lack of information. We had this discussion in another thread too. Many of these lines you talk about are built with guys outside the 1st round.

I agree that the QB is the most important position. but as we've seen....there's very few and the risk is greater than the reward.
Philadelphia Eagles
Baltimore Ravens
NY Giants - Eli does not count as getting the QB position right
2016 Broncos - Peyton Manning was not "Peyton Manning"

So yes, while the QB is the most important position on the field, there are the ways to build a winning roster and doing it through the o-line IMO is a less risky venture.

Philly maybe the best example.

Baltimore has been built with a great defense when they have been good and then more recently with a MVP QB.

I get the dislike for Eli, but when they won he was a major reason why, moreso than the OL.

And the same for Peyton. While not the Colts Peyton, he and their defense was the reason why the won, not their OL.

Eli was a serviceable QB with some good moments. He is nowhere near the elite list mentioned: Peyton, Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes. Eli isn't even DeShaun Watson or Russell Wilson.

That's entirely my point. You can win with an Eli Manning by building a stronger supporting cast and that is my less risky to do than trying to be smarter than every other GM over QB. I absolutely hate this pick....why? The Bears like him. That translates to Fields is not an elite QB.
