Didn't think Collins had it in him, but Genesis (minus Gabriel and Hackett) will kick off their first tour in 14 years in Chicago on Nov 15 at the United Center.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Phil canned his assistant drummer years back. His son drums for him now. I’m sure Phil can stand there and sing.

Here's some of their earliest work...the film quality/restoration is miraculous--looks like it was shot yesterday.

Phil’s voice is toast. I mean he’s not known for it or anything, but it’s so bad it’s distracting live.

I agree with what you've written but I've never liked Phil Collins or Genesis. I find most of their songs annoying or something.

a lot of his lyrics deal with a guy getting rejected, stood up, dumped, cheated on. he must have had a sad romantic life.

the cover of 'duke' always reminded me of the comic 'ziggy'. always passed over, ignored, insignificant, friendless...etc. he's just looking out the window at the moon, alone, at night.

my favorite album with phil was abacab. prob more the memories than the actual music...but, playing galaga or defender with 'abacab', 'no reply at all', 'like it or not' blasting away - good stuff. appreciated the horns on that album, would have liked to hear from the band chicago and their thoughts about that album.

No bigger fan of the group than me but this is going to be ....bad. It was bad 14 years ago and that was before Phil became the living embodiment of the old man from The Musical Box.

last time i went to a Genesis concert was 1987 and on the way home I got pulled over for going 25 over on Deerfield road. It was past curfew so the cop took me to the station and my dad had to come pick me up. he was not happy about that.

I'm mostly a greatest hits fan, so I don't know much about Genesis or Phil, but I saw some live footage on YouTube and he looked like a grandpa sitting in a chair singing. Felt bad for him.

1985/1986 was crazy...you had Genesis as a group with a #1 album, Phil Collins with multiple solo #1 songs, Peter Gabriel with a solo #1 song, and Mike Rutherford with a #5 song.

What was Rutherford's hit song?

It was his band Mike and the Mechanics

I have a love / hate thing with Phil Collins. The guy always struck me as a complete douche, but he's in the Ozzy camp where he has a very unique sounding voice. Not necessarily a great vocalist, but his sound is unique. The No Jacket Required record was a pretty big soundtrack to a 13 yr old BigW72.

I hated the electric sound of the Invisible Touch album, but the album did have Land of Confusion and Throwing It All Away, which are good songs.

Early Genesis progressive stuff is fantastic, but the band clearly evolved way out of that in the 80's.

That being said, a 2021 version of Genesis or Phil Collins does zero for me. Hard pass.

Well, here's Patrick Bateman's view on Genesis. Starts at 1:24
