Shoutout mostly because I have s lot of Bear fans friends and family. And I’m happy for them. And just digging more into itd absolutely wild they took Lance and let Fields fall to the Bears when Fields is literally better at every aspect of football than Lance is right now and projects to be going forward.

Somewhat of a makeup call for the Mitch trade.

Lance checks every single box. He is the "new" prototype qb. He is Dak, he is Kyle Allen. He didn't thrive on elite line and wr play to allow him to chuck it to guys that were 10 yds past the defender. He put corner fades right on the money in coverage. He reads the field, plants his god damn foot and makes the throw. Lynch paid to get him but he looks the part.

NFL defensive coordinators lose sleep at night trying to game plan for Kyle Allen

While Lance may not have had elite WR and line talent, he didn't have to face anything close to elite defensive talent either. And he was on what is easily the most skilled and overwhelmingly dominant team in the FCS. NDSU has won 8 of the 9 last FCS Championships.

Every single box that he checks, is checked based on play against lower-tier talent.

All those boxes checked — Fields is better at every one of them than Lance is.

Fields being passed over is like Watson being passed over in 2017. And betting on Lance seems to be like betting on the similarly inexperienced (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky in 2017. Curious to see how it will all turn out.

Watson got passed over because of his knees. Fields got passed over because the more people studied him the more they realized that he can't sit back and read the field. Watch the Indiana clips and tell me that couldn't be mitch making those decisions. I would take Lance all day over Fields. IDK about Wilson....he could be terrible or amazing. He is not a normal QB and he throws those low liners with the low arm slot but he could be lamar jackson where his quirkiness just works.

This is just simply not true and the more you say the more ridiculous you sound. Fields had a bad game against Indiana, but that does not make him Mitch. You have to look at things in the big picture. And I am completely confident that you do not know enough about Lance to be able to say you would take him all day over Fields. If they Bears had taken Lance your would be criticizing that decision as well.

I was criticizing fields well before the draft. If the Bears got Lance I would probably just shut up and hope Nagy screws up his development. He was ranked as the 2nd pick for almost the entire last year and then he suddenly got passed up by 2 other qb's and I am crazy for not liking him. The Jets and 49ers saw something they didn't like and the lions, falcons and broncos were just fine letting him pass by. I haven't seen as much of lance as I have of fields as he has played far fewer games. Its a small sample size but he looks like he can translate his skillset to the NFL. I compare fields to mitch because they seem to have some similar perceived weaknesses. I am not making up the inability to read the field. Its in almost every scouting report. They can't say whether its the OSU system or him but its a noticeable issue. That Indiana game should scare people more. I can not chalk what I saw up to just a bad game. When you slow it down and get into his decision making process on those plays he either pre determined some throws or had no idea what the defense was doing. A DB didn't sneak into the play and he didn't make a bad throw mechanically. He put it where he wanted it, I just don't think he knew why putting it there in the first place was a bad idea.

Can you direct me to some of your quotes criticizing Fields before the draft? I have read back through some old threads and I dont see anything.

It might have been on twitter and not here. It was a thread or tweet pertaining to OSU qb's.

Pff thinks the progressing through reads criticism is lazy. He needs to be quicker at times but they think he can do it quite well. Pff was critical of (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky from the start on the exact same issue so I'm inclined to believe them this time around.

I know not everyone is a college football fan here so I'll shock a few to remind that Indiana was ranked #11 in the country at the end of this year's football season.

The best team Trey Lance played was worse than a bad MAC team.

And iirc, Northwestern had one of the higher ranked defenses in the nation

Cynthia Frelund from the NFL Network talked to scouts from 16 NFL teams following the draft. Half of them had Fields ranked as the #1 QB available.

Before Trey Lance, Easton Stick (a 2020 5th round pick and back-up for the charges) was putting up similarly big numbers at NDSU. NDSU absolutely dominates (most of the time) on both sides of the ball and their QB's rarely get touched- Stick was only sacked 12 times in 2018, Lance 13 times in 2019. The team has won FCS Championships 8 times since 2011 under 3 different head coaches, and they have gone 128-8 in that time frame. They are men among boys in the MVC and FBS. Trey Lance is in for a rude awakening in the NFL, and I doubt he'll be running the ball 30 times for 166 yards like he did in the 2019 FCS National Championship. He is used to open throwing lanes to wide open receivers, large holes to run through, and minimal pressure. Lance is by no means a slam-dunk in the NFL.

If you've ever seen NDSU play in person (I've seen them 5 times in the Lance/Stick eras, at the Fargodome and other fields), when they are up by 14 on someone it feels like 40. They just look markedly bigger, stronger, and faster than their opponents. Curious to see how he makes the jump from playing 3rd rate college defenses to NFL defenses.

I trust Lynch ( and his guys) as a talent evaluator orders of magnitude more than Pace ( and his) .

Lynch could have had Mahomes or Watson in 2017. He chose Garoppolo instead. At least Nagy had Mahomes and Watson ranked above (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky.

But you're of course right to distrust the Bears.

Isn't Lynch the same guy who drafted Solomon Thomas 3rd overall and Reuben Foster at #31 in 2017?

If you look at Lynch's and Pace's drafts since 2017, it doesn't look like Lynch is setting the league on fire either.

Lynch has more home runs than Pace in half the time, he also has went to a SB, while Pace has yet to win a playoff game.

Most people are simply guessing. He's intriguing because he is more of an unknown quantity than some of the other QB's taken early. They love the idea of a guy who can run and throw and they've seen him run roughshod over crappy, undersize and slower defenses than you would see in FBS. I take that back. Most probably haven't watched him play a single game, only highlights (but I'm sure they'll tell you they've watched him extensively). He may be awesome and dominate the NFL the way he did the MVC in college, or he may suck, or fall somewhere in the middle.

I've only seen his highlight videos, which are obviously impressive. But a few things on them jumped out at me given the way he has been elevated above Fields by some scouts and media members:

1) He threw a lot of play-action passes for big gains to receivers who had broken wide open. Not a lot of accuracy or "quick reading" required in play action for NDSU.

2) He seems to have a strong arm, but a lot of his deep balls went to receivers who were open by two or more yards. Again, pinpoint accuracy and quick reads were not needed for these passes.

3) He can be a slow decision-maker in the pocket. A considerable number of his long runs seemed to come after he hesitated/gave up on designed pass plays.

Overall, he looks like a talented player with a promising future. But to claim that he is a level or more above Fields in his ability and development seems inaccurate.

Are we at the point where a guy with a career 67% completion rate and qb rating of 99 isn’t good? Fields will be lucky to have that career.
