I’m leaning towards Fields starting day 1. I personally think Dalton was only signed as a safety measure in case the Bears couldn’t trade up and get their guy.

I hope the Bears are open minded to Fields earning the starting job in Week 1 vs. just giving it to Dalton. If Fields is as talented as they believe he is, why wouldn't they put him out there if he appears ready?

On a side note, Bernstein and Hub were talking through this on Friday, and they apparently both believe the pandemic will likely impact Fields ability to win the starting job because of how training camp will look and maybe less pre-season games.

Apparently, neither one is aware there is a vaccine. I know Hub still believes in wearing masks outside....Anyways, go Bears.

its wierd that hub arkash played on the 85 bears. hes a little bitch.

and i dont want to hear anything about starting too early, development and all that. you don't want him to get hurt, thats it. if he can play good enough to not get hurt, then you start him, because with andy dalton you are wasting your fucking time.

From public statements it appears they want to follow the Mahomes path. I can see Fields starting if Dalton is ineffective.

Hope someone is looking for an experienced backup? Worst case for us is Foles is slotted in as the backup and Fields is no 3.

I was similarly shocked when I learned Dan Bernstein played tailback in the early 90s.

Trade him in August when someone needs a backup after an injury.

It should be an open competition for all 3, open competigion for every position on the field. I believe Fields will look good when he takes the job.

Ideally, Fields wouldn't play next year at all but I certainly hope he isn't the day one starter.

Yeah I trust their public statements about as much as I’d trust Jerry Sandusky to baby sit a 9 year old boy.

Fields will be the best QB on the Bears the day he put on pads and a helmet. I don’t know how or why they’d not move him into position as the starter day 1 if he’s making Dalton and Foles look like backups -which I’m assuming he will.

What the hell do you need to see out of Foles? Unless there are catastrophic injuries, he shouldn't see the field as a Bear ever again.

The Bears still have a good defense. Its not elite, but its still pretty good. No sense in letting the D get another year older and another year slower when you have a better QB on the bench. Start Fields from day one, maybe you win 10 games, and we'll see what happens in January.

I would love to see him, at the very least, running a couple of series a game.

Nagy, Pace and many media members have repeatedly invoked Mahomes' "development year" as the template the Bears should follow in their treatment of Fields.

Frankly, I don't see the parallel.

In Mahomes' rookie season, Alex Smith had a career year, throwing for 4,000+ yards, more than 25 touchdowns, and only five interceptions--all while leading the Chiefs to the playoffs.

The Bears have nothing like Smith on their roster, and there's a very good chance Dalton will need to be replaced either due to ineffectiveness or injury.

Additionally, it's simply not logical to assume that the reason Mahomes succeeded in 2018 is that he rode the bench in 2017. Chances are he would have been great in 2017 if he had gotten the chance to play. We'll never know for sure, but there's nothing to suggest otherwise. If Watson and Herbert can excel as rookies, there's no reason Fields can't, too. Maybe Fields won't start for Game 1, but he should see the field very quickly in his rookie season.

Right TM. I think that fans should be happy if we don’t see Fields for a year. I think that means Dalton is rewriting the record book.

Agreed. Also, Andy Reid has proven himself to be a far better coach than Matt Nagy.

The worst thing that could happen is the Bears start 1-3, largely because the offense still sucks. So they make the switch to Fields and play better finishing 9-7, but one game out of the playoffs because of the clusterfuck at the beginning of the season. Because its the Bears, this is probably exactly what will happen.

I’d add that Dalton -the guy they claim will start- is also starting at ground zero with learning the playbook just like Fields.

They’re lying about why they signed Dalton (understandably). Pace couldn’t trade into the top-10 to get a QB this year so they grabbed Dalton as a backup plan. If they sat at 20 and all the QB’s were gone they were taking Jenkins there in the 1st round -that’s why Pace traded up so eagerly to land him too. It’s obvious, Pace isn’t that hard to read which is why he gets fleeced on most trades.

Fields is easily the most talented out of the 3 on the roster. The only thing left is to see how quick he digests the playbook, if it’s the same or better than Dalton, he’ll be in there lickity-split from day 1.

Agree with both TM and NME. The KC parallel will be pushed by the Bears, when in fact it's an apples to oranges comparison. Dalton won't be as bad as Glennon (hopefully), but it will be interesting to see how they transition.

Dalton is fine when he has a AJ Greene caliber WR to throw to, with decent options underneath. We don't have that. Ergo, Dalton will suck.

I'll take the under as I don't see Dalton lasting in the starter role. Right or wrong for Fields development, he'll starting by game 4.

Fwiw it’s not that I think Dalton is as bad as Glennon or anything like that, it’s more about how talented Fields is in comparison to Foles and Dalton. I believe that if Fields is learning the playbook at the same rate Dalton is then there’s no reason they should be starting Dalton. I mean, if he can’t beat out Dalton then we traded for the wrong guy.

I just don’t really believe they signed Dalton believing they’d land Fields. Dalton was an insurance policy that they don’t need to call in a claim on now.

Another tell here imo is that Foles already knows the playbook and is at least roughly as good as Dalton but we’re not hearing anything about him starting. So keep an eye on what they do with him whether it’s trade or releasing him (not sure what that would cost them tho)

But I believe the real plan now is Fields starting.
