Funny thing is when position players pitch it's garbage time. Unwritten rules to respect a guy throwing 49 mph? I think Tony had a senior moment.

I don't think the issue is the position player as much as it it the 3-0 count. It seems silly, but whatever pursuit one is involved in has its own arcane protocols and customs.

In any case, I don't think a lot of younger people in the game subscribe to this unwritten rules as you see the outpouring of support for Mercedes from players just as you saw it for Tatis.

Here's the thing though, nobody acted like Woodward and Tingler were demented old men who were going to "lose their clubhouse."

So it gets back to the real issue- woke sportswriters hate LaRussa because he's a RACIST for thinking you should stand for the anthem. That's what it's really about.

The worst part is going to be the White Sox winning the World Series, LaRussa getting a statue outside of the newly named Barstool Chicago Pizza Reviews Field and then he gets cancelled a few years later and we have to take it down.

Yeah, me too. But I don't think he sucks because he embraces antiquated unwritten rules. I hated him in his prime. He's a prick. And I don't care if he's the manager of my team. They're the best team in baseball. Do people think they would be undefeated with someone they consider a "good" manager?

A lot of people coming around to the idea that the manager doesn't matter. I've said it for a long time, just let the shortstop make out the lineup card and save the money for a better utility infielder or middle reliever.

Were there no unwritten rules about his shameful defense of steroid users? When he and his buddies came looking for Piersall to beat his ass? For you youngsters out there, and this may come as a shock, but there's other ways to be an asshole than being racist.

One more thing about this. As I said, every micro-society has its own rules, customs, and protocols. I don't think anyone posting here ever played professional baseball. We may all think these customs are silly. But I'm also sure many of us participate in micro-societies of our own and regularly practice customs that outsiders would consider absurd.

So, while I think this whole thing is stupid and overblown and really more about the distaste for LaRussa from the woke modern sportswriters, I also think it's silly to infantilize major league ballplayers who are making more in a single season than many people make in a lifetime. "These old white men are stealing the joy of Hispanic multimillionaires!"

A pitcher got suspended for a week for showing personality. If I'm a pitcher these days, every backwards K, I'm doing a complete 360 around the mound dancing, then get back on the rubber and do tricks with the ball with one hand, while I spin my cap with the other.

The rules are fluid and ever changing.

Like I said earlier in the thread, it seems pretty uneven. A batter is free to taunt the pitcher- excuse me, express joy- but God forbid a pitcher do the same.

Here's the problem as I see it. Sure, there are a lot of guys like Trevor Bauer who don't give a fuck and think, "Well, if I don't want him to do the Billionaire Strut around the bases I shouldn't give up the home run." But for every guy like Bauer there are going to be at least several who are pissed off by that. And some of them are going to throw the ball at a batter because of it. You may think that the pitcher is 100% wrong, but it's hard to square that kind of thinking with where we are as a society overall when it's a mainstream position to think that killing someone for using a racial slur is less of an offense than using the slur in the first place. So maybe MLB should just put a stop to the taunting or joy or whatever you want to call it.

It's uneven because the 8 guys backing up the pitcher on the field are also pirouetting, bat flipping hitters. What Trevor Bauer says isn't wrong, but it's also in his own best interest.

They can have it both ways and have the fielders join the pitcher for some NFL level TD choreography after strikeouts.

I think people are under the impression that baseball players didnt have fun playing baseball prior to the look at me Latino baseball player generation of pure unadulterated joy and exuberance , bat flips, showing up your opponent , and not busting it out of the box at all times at all because dropping your bat and just rounding the bases after a home run drove viewers away . Or something.

LaRussa is wrong on the 3-0 thing, imo but whatever. The issue was calling his player clueless, making the office comment and supporting the Twins throwing at him

Still none of this matters, just a slow news week. The march to a Championship continues.

I think at a minimum many would consider it a mitigating circumstance and use it to provide an excuse. Some would say it was outright justifiable homicide.

I don't know if he's "right" or "wrong". I know he didn't invent the protocol.

Also, when Tatis did the same thing Tingler gave him the cold shoulder and Hosmer walked to the Rangers dugout and said, "We'll talk to him." This obviously isn't simply a LaRussa thing as out of touch as LaRussa may actually be (and I think he is).

I would be more understanding of the position without the position player pitching thing.

All respect for the game is gone at that point.

He didn't have to pull the "clueless" and "office/locker" thing but he's a hall of fame manager for a reason so maybe there is a method to his madness.

If I'm the position player who is pitching, I'd probably be more annoyed that the guy took three pitches. Swing the damn bat!

I know I sound like a goof but the reason he is a HOFer is Dave Duncan. And he ain't here. Dave knew when to quit and stay quit. And I bet the Tony whisperer whispered to Tony to also stay quit.

I'm beginning to think this is all part of some masterplan.

Mercedes wasn't even hit. Bummer sucked the other night and gave up the tying HR and put the winning run on base. Yet here we are ignoring that, and debating white men and Tony LaRussa. Meanwhile, since the 1-3 start to the season, the Sox have won games at a .626 clip. And also since the opening series in Anaheim, the Sox have only last back to back games once.
