Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in Division I men's basketball history who has led the Blue Devils to five national championships in his 41 seasons, plans to retire after the 2021-2022 season, sources confirmed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday.

Associate head coach Jon Scheyer has agreed to become the next head coach at Duke, sources told ESPN. He will spend the 2021-2022 season as coach-in-waiting, and take over after that.

It was fun watching him play when he was in high school.

I remember when he was a blue chip recruit. I don't think he had a great college career playing wise. Ended up working very well for him though.

I enjoyed the fact that he played for Bruce Weber's brother in high school but still chose to attend Duke instead of Illinois. Good times!

Does this mean that gd isn't going to be a Duke fan any longer?

He's going to have to deal with the inevitable recruiting violations which will come out...

I frequently wonder why a high school coach has any influence on the college decision of a player. I had several friends who played baseball in the Big 10, ACC, Horizon, etc. Any of them would have laughed at the idea of their coach being able to steer them in a direction.

I reserve my opinion on this hire until noted Duke expert Danny B weighs in.

I thank Duke for their commitment but at this time I feel I owe it to myself and my family to reopened my recruitment.

Everyone takes Duke's basketball preeminence for granted. I think we will see how heavy the lifting was in making Duke great once K is gone.

Good for him. Unfortunately he's probably going to get fired in 5 years.

He is there to take on the sanctions. They will get some one good after that.

Played against him a couple times out in Wauconda in a summer league. I'll concede...he's better than me.

If Chris Collins would have hung on for 5 years he would have had the job. Now he’ll be fired from NW and get some lower college job and bounce around for years.

Coach k needs to teach the new kid how he was able to cheat and get away with it for 40 years.

I'm pretty sure that the kid knows since that's probably how he was recruited.

I don't think his family needed anything.

I thought he declined to interview.

I don't think it is as easy to keep rolling on as a place like, say, Kansas or even UNC. I don't see good times ahead for the Blue Devils.

It will be an interesting case study to see a link between a decline in athletics and academic esteem. I think a place like Duke, while a good school, has been riding the popularity of the school caused by the basketball program resulting in it being elite in terms of acceptance rates.

Yeap- I remember watching him at a Christmas shootout as a sophomore. He dropped 40 on someone and I remember asking someone "who the hell is that kid?"

He had a pretty good recruiting class this year. We shall see if that bought him more time.
