Oddly, even after $50+M, I saw Kipnis playing 2B for the Braves AAA team last Friday night at Gwinnett County on a minor league deal (not even on the 40-man). He is a just over 9 years of service time, so either there's a reason to get to 10 if he can, or he just wants to be away from his family.

The "Athletes For Justice" website offers zero financial accountability. Go to any major charity website, and it's right there in their menu.

The grocery business runs on 1-3% profit margin. Not much margin for error (or theft).

We used to live on the 1100 block N Austin Oak Park when I was little. The neighbors had a black lab named Thurber that I would go get and hang out with. He was a great dog.

Outstanding point. Financially stable athletes, many of whom probably have already cut checks for the cause, are using a grocery store as a front for skimming.

wow, i grew up 2 blocks south of you. iowa & austin. i'm sure decades apart.

i grew up in austin, we had 1 major grocery store on the 5900 block of w. chicago ave, called 'grocerland'. chicken unlimited on lake & austin, a jewel 'tea' in oak park by north & ridgeland/nagle...a fruit market called pete's produce on north & central. not much either in the old days.

Parkins on with Les made it a 100% focus on the charity with no sports talk. Mike North made his still sports themed with charity talk mixed in. Just hope the new store doesn't get looted and destroyed the next riots.

The athletes aren't running the day-to-day of these charities. They provide a face. And their fame attracts dollars. The money goes to some supposedly noble cause. The media fawns over it. There is a public event where the organizers are celebrated. Then poof it goes away. We are a year out from our supposed racial reckoning. Hundreds of millions of dollars were raised. Where did the money go? What laws were changed?

I learned a lot about the grocery business during the year I owned a store. Experience is something you got when you didn't want to get it. Produce is the whole ballgame. You have to have someone who really knows what he's doing and constantly works the produce section. Presenting the fruits and vegetables is the most important thing. And that's where a lot of loss is.

I just remembered how much I came to hate my customers. These suburban nitwits would demand "organic" produce and then when I provided it they would complain about the way it looked. Do you want spotless apples or do you want the birds and bees? Make up your damn minds.
