There are three main suitors for the Bears, according to O'Donnell. They are: Jeff Bezos, Neil Bluhm and Pat Ryan.

interview question: will you bring back the honey bears and will you build an island on lake michican for a new stadium

Bezos being a bidder would be a McCaskey wet dream and was probably planted by the team.

If Ryan has right of first refusal, he’d be insane to pass it up.

Pat Ryan is about to hit another payday with RT Specialty’s IPO. I can see the day where RT replaces the Gallagher sponsorship.

Isn't Pat Ryan, you know, half dead? Last time I ran into him, he wasn't looking that great. And that was a few years back. What's he gonna do with the Bears?

As a guy who likes to put his name on anything he can touch, I suspect he’d enjoy his kids being owners of the Chicago Bears.

Maybe the Bears can play on the moon.

The playing surface would be better.

They can still paint it green like they do now.

It's Pat Ryan, but the Bears family is stupid if they sell. That money is going to disappear quickly it is really going to be divided that much.

Probably correct on the money as that is what the story has always been. I do not know if we actually know how the shares are distributed in the family and what the old lady's final will will be.

They have no choice to sell. They are getting nailed with the inheritance tax.

Wait, if the Bears were on the verge of selling, why would they have this plan of building a new stadium in Arlington Heights in 2033? Seems like a lot of hassle that won't add any value to the term in the short term.

They also have had decades to figure out how to run a football team. But they can't do that either.

The thing is, something well known like a family limited partnership structure is easier to implement than a process to draft and develop a superstar QB.

Nobody in the McCaskey clan seems to have any interest or talent in running a professional football team, so that could be a factor.

I’d think they’re idiots to walk away from a money machine like the Bears, but maybe they’ve decided it’s not worth the stress.

That's the thing. You don't have to run it. You have to make one hire. You hire a President and he gives you weekly update on how things are going. Some owners want to be making decisions constantly but most of those teams aren't all that successful.

At some point, you have to identify that President and have a way to assess him (or her!) that may go deeper than W/L record.

You can’t just rent Ernie Accorsi’s Rolodex every 4 years and consider it a job well done.

The Packers literally do it with no real owner.

It's not hard to look at a 4 year trend of the results and compare them to the rest of the league and your own division. Most people on here could do it.

The Packers’ approach would be preferable, but it’s somewhat antithetical to a franchise with an individual owner.

I think most would agree bad GMs can field teams with good results due to luck (and vice versa).

I have no idea what your point is now.

It sounds like you think it is impossible for an owner to know if the person they have hired to run the team is doing a good job or a bad job regardless of how much time they spend with the team or what the results are of that team.

I’m so sorry that’s happened to you.

My point all along has been that the McCaskeys show no discernible skill in running the business they’ve inherited. I don’t think it’s as simple as your ‘just hire a President and read his weekly status updates’ solution. Theoretically, the receiver of those updates would still need to understand and independently assess them.

Hell, it's arguable whether or not that franchise had competent leadership going back to the mid sixties. I say no.

Why do you believe it would be difficult to asses the team as a whole over a 4+ year period? It's a results based business. I could do it for pretty much any NFL team with about an hours worth of work. You are acting like they have to have a phd in football studies to determine that losing 12 games in a year is bad.

Please do. Since Ditka was fired, the Bears have 10 seasons with double digit losses and only 6 with double digit wins.

I don’t believe that’s the sum of it. Chris Ballard and Ryan Pace have similar results over the same tenure, but I don’t know anybody who’d prefer Pace over Ballard. And if Fields works out like most hope, it may be the case that Pace falls ass backwards into a long run of success.

To avoid any confusion - my point is not that you need a credential to run a football franchise. I do think it may help* if you have experience hiring & assessing executive leadership irrespective of industry.

*does not apply to unique, quasi-democratic processes like Green Bay
