The better play might be letting Mendick and Garcia handle second and getting another outfielder and additional relief pitching.

(ETA I posted the below before I saw that they did select Goodwin this afternoon)

They have Brian Goodwin and Tim Beckham at AAA who would both be free if they put Madrigal on the 60-day. So it has to be somebody substantially better than them, which at this point Josh Harrison is not.

Unfortunately they are in the wrong division to blow the Royals away with an offer for Merrifield.

I can't remember the Cubs or Sox suffering so many multiple month injuries to position players in one year as the Sox this year.

I haven't seen someone overstate their importance in regards to Chicago sports this much since I saw Elmhurst Steve describe his contributions as a sports radio caller.

with the glove, there won't be that much of a drop off. At the plate it will be noticeable.

And it's Schneider, who's been retired for four years now. genius

I think Mendick will be fine for a few months. If the pitching holds they will be ok.

These injuries have got to have an affect at some point. You can't lose your starting: centerfielder, leftfielder, and second baseman and have there be no significant repercussions. If there aren't, maybe Jimenez, Madrigal, and Robert are not as good as we think they are.

let me describe it to you pictorially:

Remember the days when people at bars would buy Steve beer just for being so good at calling in to the station?

Getting another OF doesn't seem worth it right now as it seems both Eloy and Robert are ahead of schedule per Hahn yesterday. Absolutely add another RHP for relief though.

Adam Engel is a serviceable option until both return.

Adam Engel is more than serviceable. His D is just about right there with LouBob, and its a million times better than Eloy. If Robert is able to return 100% this season, Eaton could be the guy DFA'd.

If/When Eloy comes back this year, he is a DH. Take all of his mitts away until the offseason.

Since Steve started this thread, the Sox are 40-21
Since Robert got hurt, the Sox are 26-12
Since Madrigal got hurt, the Sox are 4-0
They currently own the second best record in MLB (behind only the Rays), and the largest division lead in all of MLB.

So far, so good indeed.

Eloy is again hinting he will be back sooner than expected

Its not been the best two weeks (4-9), but the Sox still have the largest Division lead in the AL and the 7th best record in MLB (4th best in the AL). Not too shabby after a week filled with MANY losses.

Need an outfield, a 2B, and a 3B who can play through a hangnail.

The bullpen stepping up is our only hope to get us into August in 1st place.

2-0 without Grandal.

Standings wise, the absolute worse case scenario is they head into the AS break with a 5 game division lead.

So far, so good indeed.

right now, I'd sit tight except for a 2B and a reliever. Even those I'd wait out for our price.

Way to avoid the question. No Frank, it is a measure of how good your team is against equal or greater talent.

A way to measure how you will do when you do make it to the playoffs. Is your goal to just make the playoffs and win the division or do you want another World Championship?

No, but the Astros have shown who the White Sox really are....at this time. Lets just hope we keep getting lucky for another 3-4 weeks.

Not really. The Astros were better at their home park against a team with a lot of injured starters.

Are you sure that is true? Most dominant teams end up crushing the bad teams they play in the regular season and going a little bit over .500 against the good ones.

Sox are not .500 against good teams. 16-24. That puts them 20th in MLB. Hopefully all that changes in a month or so.

This sort of feels like 2005. I am not saying to make 1 trade for a utility player and that's it. I think they need 1 if not 2 RPs, and a possible 2B. I wonder what the asking for Story is.... Burger, Steiver, Thompson? I would do that.
