When I asked Tom O’Brien from BRGRBELLY what made the burgers at this beloved Portage Park spot so good, he hesitated for a moment, before saying, “We do everything from scratch.” Not only do the cooks grind the meat in-house, they mix in some fatty pork belly with the beef. The extra fat content means that the patties get a clearly visible crust from the hot griddle. They also bake buns throughout the week, so they never get stale. I haven’t tried all the different burgers on the menu, but that’s because I’m hooked on the Black Betty, which adds bacon, bleu cheese and crunchy fried onion straws.

As I told Sam, Top Notch was ranked #10. As somebody who grew up near the now defunct Oak Lawn location, I've probably had Top Notch burgers 150-200 times in my life. They are good, their fries are better IMO. BRGRBELLY is better than Top Notch, so that makes Sam's location a top ten.

The secret FB chat is indeed a chat, nothing you can find searching groups. The NOT CSFMB group exists and has names you could ask for an invite I suppose.

When I stopped in to see Sam at BRGRBELLY, he said it was a combination of the business of the restaurant and the overall vibe from the bored that made him leave, not specifically one or two people. He may have been being nice about it, but that's who he is, a nice, really funny guy.

Glad he got the recognition his craft cooking deserves, i forgot to look the article up when they were discussing it on the radio earlier in the week.

I really wish I was closer to eat there often.

i'm a half hour away thereabouts and i will definitely try to get there this summer.
